The development of marine fish culture in Martinique, Guadeloupe, Reunion and Mayotte islands is relatively new and relies on the culture of the Red Drum (official name since 2007; scientific name: Sciaenops ocellatus). The current production is of about 70 tonnes per year in Reunion (only one company), 200 tonnes in Mayotte (a cooperative deriving from an entrepreneur's cooperative and an industrial company: Mayotte Aquaculture) and 100 tonnes in Martinique (around twelve artisanal companies). A company has also been running in Guadeloupe since 2004. Reunion's production is sold on the local market. In Mayotte, the entire Red Drum production of Mayotte-Aquaculture is exported to Europe.
