Over the last decade the organic market in the EU has grown faster than the organic agricultural area, which raises the question to what extent organic supply chains function effectively. Therefore, this study investigated the creation and distribution of added value in a number of organic supply chains in different EU countries. The results of the case studies suggest that higher added value is created in organic compared to conventional supply chains. However, no evidence was found that the relative share of organic farmers in the total added value differs substantially from that of conventional farmers. Also in organic food supply chains farmers capture a relative small proportion of added value. This can partly be explained by similarities of organic... |

This third global report provides new insights into the evolution of certified agriculture and forestry. ITC has teamed up once more with the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and the International Institute for Sustainable (IISD) to provide data about 14 major sustainability standards for bananas, cocoa, coffee, cotton, palm oil, soybeans, cane sugar, tea and forestry products. This report helps shape decisions of policymakers, producers and businesses, working to address systemic labour and environmental challenges through certified sustainable production. |

It is generally acknowledged that organic agriculture can contribute to socio-economic and ecologically sustainable development. The market for organic products is growing and offers producers and exporters in the South opportunities to improve their incomes and living conditions. But what role does organic farming play in the poorer countries? Some current data are presented in this paper, based on the results of the annual global survey on organic farming carried out by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL in collaboration with the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements IFOAM. |

The study reflects on the role of sustainability certification in some of the most pressing issues in raw materials, horticulture and tropical (RaMHOT) value chains, namely farm income, market access, and rural development. It also highlights potential enabling factors and barriers, which facilitate or hinder positive impacts of certification, and provides recommendations for rendering certification schemes more effective in mainstreaming sustainability in the RaMHOT value chains. The report focuses on four crops: cocoa, cotton, sisal, and tea. Correspondingly, we focus on the following certification schemes: Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), Cotton made in Africa (CmiA), Fairtrade, Organic, Rainforest Alliance (RA) and UTZ. |

Organic agriculture is practiced in 178 countries, and 57.8 million hectares of agricultural land are managed organically by approximately 2.7 million farmers. The global sales of organic food and drink reached 90 billion US dollars in 2016, according to Ecovia Intelligence. The 19th edition of The World of Organic Agriculture, published by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and IFOAM – Organics International, provides a comprehensive review of recent developments in global organic agriculture. It includes contributions from representatives of the organic sector around the world and provides comprehensive organic farming statistics that cover the area under organic management, specific information about land use in organic systems, the... |

Globally, organic farming continues to grow and, in many countries, has reached wide acceptance amongst farmers, consumers, market actors, policymakers, and the public. According to the latest available data (per 31.12.2014), 43.7 million hectares are under organic agricultural management, and this constitutes almost one percent of the global agricultural land; the global market is estimated to be 80 billion USD (Willer & Lernoud 2016). These data, which are mostly based on national data sources, are annually compiled by FiBL, which has been collecting and publishing data on organic agriculture worldwide since 2000. They are widely used and quoted by governments drawing up action plans for organic agriculture; researchers; market actors; market... |
