Changes in the polysaccharide matrix of calcareous green algae during growth ArchiMer
Liebezeit, G.; Dawson, R..
The organic matrix of three species of calcareous green algae (family Caulerpales, order Udoteaceae was analysed during different growth stages for its carbohydrate content. In all cases investigated a decrease with age in the relative content of structural polysaccharides paralleled by an increase in reserve polymers was observed. A dynamic carbonate deposition model is suggested based on consideration of the carbohydrate composition.

Biochemical compounds in the pelagic and sedimentary environment of antartic waters ArchiMer
Dawson, R; Liebezeit, G..
During two cruises of FS "Meteor" in the Atlantic sector of the Antarctic, Nov. 1980 - Feb. 1981, a range of organic compounds was determined in seawater, particulates and deep-sea sediment pore waters and compared with biological parameters describing phytoplankton and microbiological activities. Amino acids were determined by HPLC techniques with fluorescence detection of the compounds at their natural levels. Combined amino acids both in solution and from particulate matter as well as mono- and polysaccharides were determined over a wide station grid. DOC, fluorimetric chlorophyll and urea measurements were routinely performed. A distnction was made between water extractable reserve substances in the particulate matter and structural protein and...

Different benthic size-compartments and their relationship to sediment chemistry in the deep Eurasian Arctic Ocean OMA
Kröncke, I.; Vanreusel, A.; Vincx, M.; Wollenburg, J.; Mackensen, A.; Liebezeit, G.; Behrends, B..
During the Arctic Expedition ARK VIII/3 (August to September 1991) with RV Polarstern, the macrofauna, meiofauna, Foraminifera, bacteria were sampled and sediment chemistry was determined at 13 stations along a transect from the Barents Sea slope across the deep Arctic Eurasian Basins towards the Lomonosov Ridge. Water depths ranged from 258 to 4427 m. In general, higher values for all benthic compartments as well as total organic carbon (TOC) and total hydrolysable amino acids (THAA) were recorded for the Barents Sea slope than for the deeper stations in the basins and the ridge slopes. The only significant correlation found was between macrofaunal abundance and depth. Bacterial and all faunal abundances as well as bacterial and...
