Infestation pattern and parasitic castration of the crustacean Riggia paranensis (Crustacea: Cymothoidea) on the fresh water fish Cyphocharax gilbert (Teleostei: Curimatidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Azevedo,Juliana de Souza; Silva,Leonardo Gomes da; Bizerri,Carlos Roberto Silveira Fontenelle; Dansa-Petretski,Marilvia Alencar; Lima,Neuza Rejane Wille.
Cyphocharax gilbert infested by Riggia paranensis shows parasitic castration. The prevalence of parasitism in C. gilbert varied among different environments, being higher in the middle rio Itabapoana. Fish were collected monthly using two cast nets (thrown 30 times during the day) and gillnets kept in the river during 12 hour, from sunset to sunrise, between September 1997 and August 2000. Infestation pattern was investigated on 1358 specimens. Most of them were infested (57.9%), with one or two parasites; the majority (62.9%) was collected during the rainy season (spring-summer). The parasite did not show preference for sex or size of hosts. A total of 91.5% of the 511 examined parasites had a body size that represented 10.1% to 20% of host standard...

Fishing activity in Northern Rio de Janeiro State (Brazil) and its relation with small cetaceans BABT
Beneditto,Ana Paula Madeira Di; Ramos,Renata Maria Arruda; Lima,Neuza Rejane Wille.
Research on fishing activity at Atafona village, in Northern Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (21°35'S), was carried out between 1987-96 for the purpose of relating it to the accidental capture of small cetaceans and of estimating the relationship between fishing activity and the diet of small cetaceans. Data on fishing operations were obtained at the cold storage plants management, from interviews with fishermen and personal observations. The most representative fishing resources were Xyphopenaeus kroyeri, Micropogonias furnieri, Carcharhinus plumbeus, C. acronotus, and Rhizoprionodon porosus. Gillnets are responsible for the accidental capture of small cetaceans in the region, mainly Pontoporia blainvillei and Sotalia fluviatilis (marine form). Four types of...

Frequency-dependence of mating success in Poeciliopsis monacha (Pisces, Cyprinodontiformes) reproductive complex, Sonora, Mexico BABT
Lima,Neuza Rejane Wille; Bizerril,Carlos Roberto S. F..
A diversity of all-female fishes of the genus Poeciliopsis coexists with their sexual ancestor species in streams of western Mexico. All-females are hybrids that depend on the sperm of paternal species to reproduce. Rare-female advantage is one of several hypotheses that attempt to explain how the diversity of all-female biotypes is maintained within the Poeciliopsis reproductive complexes. According to this hypothesis, the uncommon all-female biotype has a mating advantage over the common ones and has been maintained by a dynamic equilibrium process. In the P. monacha reproductive complex at Arroyo de los Platanos the density of two all-female biotypes (P. 2monacha-lucida I and II) varies across pools. The objective of this study was to analyse fecundity...

Variations on maternal-embryonic relationship in two natural and six laboratory made hybrids of Poeciliopsis monacha-lucida (Pisces, Cyprinodontiformes) BABT
Lima,Neuza Rejane Wille.
The objective of this study was to analyze the maternal-embryonic relationship in eight hybrids Poeciliopsis monacha-lucida. Two natural hybrids (MLVII and MLVIII) collected in Mexico, and in a repertory of six hybrids produced by artificial insemination (A1, A4, B1, B2, E1, and E2) were analyzed. Dry weight of mature eggs and of embryos was significantly different among hybrids. All hybrids but B1 and E2 exhibited superfetation and lecithotrophy. This result showed that the association between superfetation and lecithotrophy were not restricted to P. monacha.
