The objective of this paper is to determine production costs of switchgrass, eastern gammagrass, and giant miscanthus using Mississippi and Oklahoma data. Production costs were computed using a standard enterprise budgeting approach by species and method of harvest. Results indicate cost difference across species and method of harvest. |

Based on the results of a 1999 survey of Mississippi Beef Cattle Producers, producers were willing to invest $1.66 per head marketed in a beef cattle marketing cooperative. Factors that had the largest positive impact on WTP were producers who were willing to permanently identify all of their cows and calves and producers who were willing to accept prices negotiated by the cooperative. Negative factors included producer willingness to implement a pre-weaning health management program and the percentage of replacement heifers purchased through regular auctions. |

This case study focuses on an investment decision made in a poultry processing firm which is faced with increased sales targets but is constrained by dependence on other companies for storage and distribution. The decision to construct a distribution center is analyzed in this study. Instructors can use this case to teach agribusiness finance. As with other case studies, many issues can be explored, such as market channels, the importance of assumptions, and structure of the poultry industry. |

Beef cattle production in the southeastern United States differs in size, practice, and production type from other U.S. regions. Smaller, cow-calf type operations dominate in this region because the climate, forage availability, and other land use practices of farmers make this type of cattle operation more ideal for the Southeast. Cow-calf production, particularly small-herd enterprises, does not typically require the level of intense management compared to other beef operations, thus making it more manageable for those with limited time and labor. This research summarizes the current practices and characteristics that define the Southeastern cow-calf operation as it operates under the new challenges of today’s market and operating environment; it also... |
