Holocene and Eemian sea surface temperature trends as revealed by alkenone and Mg/Ca paleothermometry ArchiMer
Leduc, G.; Schneider, R.; Kim, J. -h.; Lohmann, G..
In this study we review a global set of alkenone- and foraminiferal Mg/Ca-derived sea surface temperatures (SST) records from the Holocene and compare them with a suite of published Eemian SST records based on the same approach For the Holocene, the alkenone SST records belong to the actualized GHOST database (Kim, J.-H Schneider R.R., (2004) GHOST global database for alkenone-derived Holocene sea-surface temperature records. Available from. http.//www pangaea de/Projects/GHOST.), while the Mg/Ca-derived SST database represents a new compilation The actualized GHOST database not only confirms the SST changes previously described but also documents the Holocene temperature evolution in new oceanic regions such as the Northwestern Atlantic, the eastern...

Glacial-interglacial changes in (H2O)-O-18, HDO and deuterium excess - results from the fully coupled ECHAM5/MPI-OM Earth system model ArchiMer
Werner, M.; Haese, B.; Xu, X.; Zhang, X.; Butzin, M.; Lohmann, G..
In this study we present the first results of a new isotope-enabled general circulation model set-up. The model consists of the fully coupled ECHAM5/MPI-OM atmosphere-ocean model, enhanced by the JSBACH interactive land surface scheme and an explicit hydrological discharge scheme to close the global water budget. Stable water isotopes (H2O)-O-18 and HDO have been incorporated into all relevant model components. Results of two equilibrium simulations under pre-industrial and Last Glacial Maximum conditions are analysed and compared to observational data and paleoclimate records for evaluating the model's performance in simulating spatial and temporal variations in the isotopic composition of the Earth's water cycle. For the pre-industrial climate, many...

Water isotope variations in the global ocean model MPI-OM ArchiMer
Xu, X.; Werner, M.; Butzin, M.; Lohmann, G..
The stable water isotopes (H2O)-O-18 and HDO are incorporated as passive tracers into the oceanic general circulation model MPI-OM, and a control simulation under present-day climate conditions is analyzed in detail. Both delta O-18 and delta D distributions at the ocean surface and deep ocean are generally consistent with available observations on the large scale. The modelled delta D-delta O-18 relations in surface waters slightly deviates from the slope of the global meteoric water line in most basins, and a much steeper slope is detected in Arctic Oceans. The simulated deuterium excess of ocean surface waters shows small variations between 80 degrees S and 55 degrees N, and a strong decrease north of 55 degrees N. The model is also able to capture the...

A model-data comparison of the Holocene global sea surface temperature evolution ArchiMer
Lohmann, G.; Pfeiffer, M.; Laepple, T.; Leduc, G.; Kim, J-h..
We compare the ocean temperature evolution of the Holocene as simulated by climate models and reconstructed from marine temperature proxies. We use transient simulations from a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model, as well as an ensemble of time slice simulations from the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project. The general pattern of sea surface temperature (SST) in the models shows a high-latitude cooling and a low-latitude warming. The proxy dataset comprises a global compilation of marine alkenone- and Mg/Ca-derived SST estimates. Independently of the choice of the climate model, we observe significant mismatches between modelled and estimated SST amplitudes in the trends for the last 6000 yr. Alkenone-based SST records show a...
