Rural areas development through endogenous potentials AgEcon
Theodosiou, Giorgos; Michailidis, Anastasios; Loizou, Efstratios; Chatzitheodoridis, Fotis.
The main objective of the present paper is to reveal the most important reasons for admitting and supporting a local factor, such as a Union of Agricultural Cooperatives, by the rural residents of a typical Greek region. Moreover, the investigation of the possible dependence relationships among the socioeconomic variables of a market research, which refers to the willingness to purchase dairy products from the Cooperative (the dependent variable) and the independent variables, constitute the intention of the paper. From a methodological point of view, the study extends the employment of categorical multivariate methodologies into rural development issues. Interesting results are revealed from the segmentation of rural populations regarding the drivers of...

Fisheries policies impacts consideration towards the development of rural coastal areas AgEcon
Loizou, Efstratios; Chatzitheodoridis, Fotis; Mattas, Konstadinos; Polymeros, Konstantinos.
The current study aims to examine the effectiveness of fisheries policies and specifically of the Greek Operational Programme for Fisheries, 2007-13. In specific, aims to examine and assess possible impacts generated, in the regional economy of Voreio and Notio Aigaio from its four axis, with particularity to the forth one. For this a regional Input-Output model was built in order to capture direct and indirect impacts in terms of output, employment and income. Results indicate that the dynamics of the fisheries sector in the regional economy are very weak and along with the continuous shrinking of the sector, leads to the necessity of supporting alternative vocational activities for the development of coastal rural areas. Though, results indicate that the...

Mobile telephony as a change drivers in rural areas AgEcon
Michailidis, Anastasios; Loizou, Efstratios; Nastis, Stefanos A.; Mattas, Konstadinos.
The aim of the paper is to reveal the most important causes of mobile telephony use by rural residents. In particular, the examination of the expected changes due to use of mobile phones and the assessment of the major causes that drive rural residents to desire mobile telephony access constitute the main objective of the paper. In addition, the study extends the employment of binomial econometric methodologies into rural development issues. Interesting results are revealed from the three discrete segments of rural populations regarding the drivers of mobile phone use. The majority of the users belong to the so-called “farmers”, where the dominant causes of mobile phone use are different from the rest ones. More specifically, causes such as region and...

The adoption of water saving irrigation practices in the Region of West Macedonia AgEcon
Michailidis, Anastasios; Nastis, Stefanos A.; Loizou, Efstratios; Mattas, Konstadinos.
The use of irrigation water for agricultural production requires innovative and sustainable research and an appropriate transfer of water saving technologies. The main aim of this paper is to explore the irrigating behaviour of farmers examining factors affecting their decision to adopt novel water saving practices. In order to achieve the above aim both summary statistics and multivariate methodologies are employed. In particular, a two-step cluster analysis was used to explore the different adoption levels of water saving practices and a categorical regression model was estimated to explain this variation. Data were collected through a survey addressing 400 irrigators, carried out in 2008 in a typical Greek rural area. Results show that although...

Regional input-output analysis: application on rural regions in Germany, the Czech Republic and Greece AgEcon
Semerak, Vilem; Zigic, Kresimir; Loizou, Efstratios; Golemanova-Kuhar, Antoaneta.
While agriculture definitely is a traditional and important sector of national economy, it is also a sector the importance of which is often underestimated. More correct and realistic description of its economic role should be based on input-output methods. Unfortunately regional level input-output tables are only rarely available. We therefore apply modified GRIT regionalization methodology on a remote rural NUTS 2 level region in three different countries (Germany, Greece, and the Czech Republic respectively) and demonstrate that this approach makes regional-level input-output analysis a viable tool in realistic evaluation of contribution of the agri-food production chain for local economies. We provide empirical results that enable us to describe the...

Drivers of consumer’s adoption of innovative food AgEcon
Loizou, Efstratios; Michailidis, Anastasios; Tzimitra-Kalogianni, Irene.
Over the last years, food safety, health and environmental issues are a few among many other reasons that force consumers to adopt new innovative food products – organic, private label, genetically modified and functional – as part of their consumption. This spectacular shift of the consumption forwards “innovative” food products attracts the interest of the analyst as it can shed new light on consumer’s behaviour and on modeling and understanding better his long-term behaviour. Thus, this study attempts to investigate the factors that influence consumer’s decision in purchasing either traditional or new innovative products and to what extend this shift between those two groups of products is related to pre-defined elements. This is achieved by employing...
