Xiphinema brasiliense, a new opistodelphic species of Brazilian nematode, was found in soil around potato roots at Sapecado (State of São Paulo, Brazil). It differs from the other known opistodelphic species of the genus, by its type of tail end, which is digitate. It contrasts most strongly with X. ensiculiferum (Cobb, 1893), in which the shape of the extremity is decidedly hemispheroidal. The species most closely resembling X. brasiliense isX. chambersi Thorne, 1939, from which it is distinguished by its longer stylet and the mentioned characteristic form of the end of the tail. The X. brasiliense amphids are also very short and wide, unlike those of X. chambersi. |

In two independent Irish potato experiments carried out at the Lameira Exp. Sta. of the Instituto Agronômico de Campinas, in 1952, serious damage was observed in the tubers due to the attack of a Diplopoda - Pseudonannolenidae, Pseudonannolene paulista Brölemann, 1902. One of these experiments was undertaken in order to test the varieties Konsuragis and Eigenheimer imported from Sweden. Amonium sulphate, cotton or ricinus meal were used as source of Nitrogen at the rate of 80 kg of N per hectare. Superphosphate at the rate of 120 kg of P2O5 and Potassium sulphate at the rate of 60 kg of K2O were also used in this experiment. It has been observed that the number of affected tubers was greater in the Konsuragis variety and also that the attack by Diplópoda... |

Soybean varieties cultivated at present in Brazil (Abura and Rio Grande), as well as some other promissing strains (455, Chosen, Georgian, Pereira Barreto, Arksoy, Acadian, etc.) have shown severe attacks by the rootknot nematodes. The study of the parasite showed that two forms are present, attacking the soybean roots, both being closely related to Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid & White, 1919) Chitwood, 1949. Variety N 46-2652, considered to be resistent in the Southern part of the United States, proved to be susceptible to the mentioned nematodes, according to results of two pot test, discussed in this paper. Palmeto, La 41-1219, N 45-3799 and Otootan varieties were considered resistent to these nematodes, judged by the results of one field trial... |
