A metadata model for cross-domain marine data management, the SeaDataNet/Geo-Seas experience ArchiMer
Diviacco, P.; Casas Munoz, R.; Sorribas, J.; Loubrieu, Thomas.
Data management in the marine sciences faces the complex issue of addressing contrasting cognitive models across scientific domains, meaning the various representations that different communities build for overlapping areas of interest. Each of these communities constructs an identity on a specific and personal set of inherited backgrounds, practices, and tacit knowledge, which are mirrored in how they understand the targets of their studies. From a practical point of view, this can result in mis-linking observations and usage. This paper reports on the work done within the EU FP7 SeaDataNet project to tackle such problems through an integrated discovery and data access paradigm. It is based on a flexible metadata model that allows researchers to link...

Technological choices for dense networks of small sensors ArchiMer
Rolin, Jean-francois; Loubrieu, Thomas; Delauney, Laurent; Carotenuto, Federico; Dhaussy, Philippe; Obeid, Fadi; Delory, Eric.
Small, generally low-cost sensors, that are deployed in unsupervised networks (or remote locations such as the ocean) are becoming more and more important across RIs and across domain. Distributed infrastructures require efficient data transmission through a more strict effort on standards for sensor registration, sensor web enablement, sensor-embedded treatment capacities. Network-enabled sensors offer a strong potential. This deliverable will present ongoing initiatives and proves the maturity and security of the smart sensor techniques applied at large scale.

Serving GODAE Data and Products to the Ocean Community ArchiMer
Blower, Jon D.; Blanc, Frederique; Clancy, Mike; Cornillon, Peter; Donlon, Craig; Hacker, Peter; Haines, Keith; Hankin, Steve C.; Loubrieu, Thomas; Pouliquen, Sylvie; Price, Martin; Pugh, Timothy F.; Srinivasan, Ashwanth.
The Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE [http://www.godae.org]) has spanned a decade of rapid technological development. The ever-increasing volume and diversity of oceanographic data produced by in situ instruments, remote-sensing platforms, and computer simulations have driven the development of a number of innovative technologies that are essential for connecting scientists with the data that they need. This paper gives an overview of the technologies that have been developed and applied in the course of GODAE, which now provide users of oceanographic data with the capability to discover, evaluate, visualize, download, and analyze data from all over the world. The key to this capability is the ability to reduce the inherent complexity of...

Ocean Data Interoperability Platform. Final strategic analysis report ArchiMer
Loubrieu, Thomas.
As outlined in the Description of Work for Work Package 4, “the ODIP workshops and the ODIP prototypes as well as the resulting feedback will provide the ODIP partners with an insight into possible common standards and/or interoperability solutions. However implementing these solutions in practice might have significant implications for the operational systems. Their adoption may require modifications throughout the existing system from the portal to the distributed data providers”. This document describes the “Final strategic analysis” which has been conducted to identify the possible impacts and potential solutions for the adoption of the prototype interoperability solutions and the associated standards by the regional data infrastructures. This analysis...

Oceanotron server for marine in-situ observations ArchiMer
Loubrieu, Thomas; Bregent, Sophie; Griffiths, Guy; Blower, Jon.
Ifremer, French marine institute, is deeply involved in data management for different ocean in-situ observation programs (ARGO, OceanSites, GOSUD, ...) or other European programs aiming at networking ocean in-situ observation data repositories (myOcean, seaDataNet, Emodnet). To capitalize the effort for implementing advance data dissemination services (visualization, download with subsetting) for these programs and generally speaking water-column observations repositories, Ifremer decided to develop the oceanotron server (2010). Knowing the diversity of data repository formats (RDBMS, netCDF, ODV, ...) and the temperamental nature of the standard interoperability interface profiles (OGC/WMS, OGC/WFS, OGC/SOS, OpeNDAP, ...), the server is designed to manage...

Evolution in data and product management for serving operational oceanography, a GODAE feedback ArchiMer
Blanc, F; Baralle, V; Blower, J.d.; Bronner, E; Cornillon, P; De La Beaujardiere, J; Donlon, C; Gemmel, A; Hankin, S.c.; Keeley, R; Lauret, O; Loubrieu, Thomas; Petiteville, I; Pouliquen, Sylvie; Price, M; Pugh, T; Srinavasan, A.
The GODAE (Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment) project has operated for a decade to establish a common definition and description of what is a GODAE ocean data product, and tuned each production center to routinely serve quality-controlled ocean data. A legacy of GODAE has been in harmonizing the various products and the development of essential and generic functions to connect users to products tackling the problem of both the diversity of ocean data and volume of data flows. The European directive 'Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe (INSPIRE) and the IOOS Data Management And Communication plan issues (DMAC) have defined the (distributed) architecture to serve data geospatially referenced. Since 2007, the two of them enter the...

SensorML profiles and O&M data models adapted to specific marine observation data. SensorML and O&M expressions for Research Vessels and Fixed Stations. ArchiMer
Sorribas, Jordi; Loubrieu, Thomas; Olive, Joan; Casas, Raquel; Schaap, Dick.
SeaDataNet II wants to adopt the OGC standards for Sensor Web Enablement (SWE). This document formulates specific SeaDataNet profiles for the SensorML and Observations & Measurements models that can be applied by operators of operational observation systems to describe in more detail their observations and to provide standardised access to these observations using the SOS service protocol. In practice, the SensorML and O&M metadata will be attached to the core CDI discovery format as extensions, giving users of the SeaDataNet portal more usage information on specific observations and a way for direct access to the related data streams from operational sensor systems, such as real-time Metocean networks and underway data from systems onboard...
