INCREASING DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION OF SOUTH AFRICAN WINES: IDENTIFYING THE KEY MARKET SEGMENTS OF THE “BLACK DIAMONDS” AgEcon
Ndanga, Leah Z.B.; Louw, Andre; van Rooyen, Johan.
Although South Africans are not predominantly wine drinkers, the industry is looking for ways to develop the local market to balance exports. The black middle class, increasingly referred to as the Black Diamonds are the most powerful marketing trend in the last 10 years as they have emerged as the strongest buying influence in the economy and making inroads in understanding this market presents a good opportunity. The study asserts that the key factors influencing the South African consumers’ behavior are age, gender, income, race and wine drinking history. Alternative marketing options for small-scale farmers in the wake of changing agri-food supply chains in South Africa AgEcon
Louw, Andre; Jordaan, Daniel du Plessis Scheepers; Ndanga, Leah Z.B.; Kirsten, Johann F..
With South Africa’s urban population approaching 60%, supermarkets and fast food chains have become important players in the South African food system. These large players in the food sector have systematically modified their procurement practices especially with regard to fresh fruit and vegetables and are now circumventing spot markets in favour of sourcing via in-house sourcing companies who mainly procure from preferred supplier producers. This paper draws extensively from a global research programme which seeks to highlight the market changes that potentially contribute to continued exclusion of the small producers from mass consumer markets. This paper illustrates, through a series of case studies, how integration of small-scale farmers into the...

Is geographic diversification sufficient to limit contract grower risk? AgEcon
Geyser, Mariette; Louw, Andre; Botha, L..
Lending and financial institutions have looked for a variety of ways to expand their portfolios into agriculture, but because of the risks associated with lending to farmers who lack traditional forms of collateral, they face price and yield risks, causing these inroads to be limited. Market-based instruments are readily available for price risk. Organised exchanges offering the most basic of these instruments, futures and options, have operated for a long time, providing transparency to the market and low-cost risk transfer tools for those able to access them. While the use of price risk management instruments is an incomplete solution, it has sufficient merits on its own and will make the overall burden of risk more bearable. The use of these instruments...

Importance of Sustainability on Agriculture in Southern Africa AgEcon
Louw, Andre; Ndanga, Leah Z.B..
This paper seeks to describe and discuss the impact that climate changes, and other challenges in terms of sustainability, have had on Africa and particularly on South Africa. It seeks to discuss the extent to which these changes directly and indirectly impact agriculture and the measures that are currently underway, with particular reference to South Africa, as well as suggest other strategies that could be implemented to attenuate the effects of climate change, thereby advancing the global shift towards sustainability. The paper discusses environmental and other changes that have taken place in Africa and asserts that the continent is in a particularly difficult situation in light of the debate on sustainability versus productivity. The fact that most of...

Modelling the determinants of wine choice among South Africa’s “Black Diamonds” AgEcon
Ndanga, Leah Z.B.; Louw, Andre; van Rooyen, C.J.; Chikazunga, Davison.
This paper uses a choice based conjoint analysis in an attempt to develop a consumer profile for the new market for black consumers. Although the different statistical packages used variants of the MNL model, the results were significantly similar with no contradictions in their results and the model provided here had the best statistical significance. Despite the models’ imminent statistical insignificance, they suggested valuable notions about black consumers’ wine choice determinants. Age, gender and the choice of favourite red wine may be used to segment the market and the other significant coefficients will affect the marketing and distribution choices to be followed by wine companies.

Mapping the competitive food chain for fresh produce retailers in Tshwane, South Africa AgEcon
Madevu, Hilton; Louw, Andre; Ndanga, Leah Z.B..
Although several previous studies have ascertained that smallholder farmers prefer informal markets, a few vertically integrated retail chains increasingly dominate South Africa’s agro-food supply chain. The onset of this trend has led to the demise of a large number of general dealers in favour of the sleek new stores. However, greengrocers and hawkers in the fresh produce market have proven to be resilient to this onslaught. This resilience is of interest to this study. The study used ‘Porter’s forces’ model and chain analysis to structure the research and seeks to describe and analyse the competitive situation by determining the relative competitive and strategic behaviour of retailers and to map the sector’s value flows. The main findings were that...

Determinants of small scale farmers' participation in restructured food markets in South Africa: The case of the Tomato sector AgEcon
Chikazunga, Davison; Bienabe, Estelle; Louw, Andre.
This paper discusses the effects of markets restructuring on small-scale farmers in South Africa by analysing the determinants of small-scale farmers’ market choices in the tomato sector in two Provinces. South Africa has a very dualistic agricultural sector with a highly performing large-scale capital intensive agriculture on one hand and a traditional, semi subsistence small-scale communal sector on the other. Small farmers’ participation in modern markets (i.e. supermarkets, agro-processors and national fresh produce markets) is thus very low. Furthermore, results from our survey indicate that small-scale tomato growers in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces prefer supplying informal markets than modern markets. The econometric analysis of household level...

Dynamics of the restructuring fresh produce food markets in the southern African region AgEcon
Louw, Andre; Chikazunga, Davison; Haankuku, Choolwe; Ndanga, Leah Z.B..
Agri-food markets are restructuring, characterised by an increased consolidation and concentration of the industry, as supermarkets continue to expand at an exponential rate throughout the region. Unlike the global phenomenon where the formal markets are replacing informal markets, this is not so in the region. The informal sector is also expanding characterised by a significant level of restructuring. The major supermarkets have restructured their procurement strategies through the introduction of private standards, centralised procurement systems and distribution centres. Despite the increase in agri-food commodities emanating from the expansion of the retail sector, there have been little or no opportunities for smallholder farmers. The restructuring...

Patterns of restructuring food markets in South Africa: The case of fresh produce supply chains AgEcon
Chikazunga, Davison; Joordan, D.; Bienabe, Estelle; Louw, Andre.
The restructuring process of the food markets in South Africa is at an advanced stages of consolidation and the emergence dominance of few supermarket chains expanding into non-traditional areas, through franchise format stores and forecourt stores overtaking informal wet markets and green grocers. The growth has been followed by consolidation of the procurement system from a decentralised to a centralised procurement and distribution mechanism replacing the wholesaling function of the National Fresh Produce Markets. The growth in disposable income, , population growth and urbanization have fuelled the demand food outlets like supermarkets which in turn fuels innovations and dynamic changes surrounding supermarkets Keywords: Fresh produce, Procurement,...

A Consumer-oriented Study of the South African Beef Value Chain AgEcon
Labuschagne, Anita; Louw, Andre; Ndanga, Leah Z.B..
The South African beef industry, like many other South African supply chains, is challenged by the increased complexity and demand brought about by globalization, increased volumes and competition, shortage of skilled staff and pressures to meet changing customer needs. The power has shifted from the supply side to the consumer. The consumer has been empowered by greater knowledge. Consumer needs are changing. A combination of these two facts implies that not only the retailer, but also the supply chain as a whole must make sure that it is aligned to deliver customer value, in order to ensure sustainable competitiveness and survival, manage risks and ensure acceptable returns. Competition today is based on competing supply chains. The focus of this study...
