Ex Ante Economic Impact of Genetically Modified (GM) Cowpea in Benin AgEcon

The net impact of pest-resistant GM crops on the welfare of both producers and consumers in developing countries is currently unknown and subject to speculation. This study uses choice-based conjoint protocol to estimate the net impact of pest-resistant Genetically Modified (GM) cowpea on net social welfare in Benin given price and income risks. Results imply that Bt cowpea will increase expected net social welfare by about $US 50 million per year in Benin given no inefficiencies in the seed sector. If inefficiencies in the seed sector are such that cowpea growers can access Bt cowpea seeds only 50% of the time, net benefits from Bt cowpea drop to about $US 11 million per year.

Site-specific application of manure has the potential to improve crop production and environmental quality. If manure is applied where it is needed, in the quantity required by the crop, over application, with attendant runoff and leaching problems can be reduced. The production and trade of cowpea (Vigna Uniculata), called "blackeyed peas" in the US, are a growing business for farmers and merchants serving the rapidly expanding urban areas of West and Central Africa. Cowpea fits the needs of the urban poor. It is an inexpensive source of protein that does not require refrigeration. A better understanding of consumer preferences for cowpea is essential to market development. Precision agricultural technology promises to move crop production closer to a manufacturing paradigm, but analysis of yield monitor, sensor and other spatial data has proven difficult because correlation among neighboring observations often violates the assumptions of classical statistical analysis. When spatial structure is ignored variance estimates tend to be inflated and significance levels of test statistics are reduced. Factors Affecting Success for Women Entrepreneurs in West Africa: The Case of Kosai, a Value Added Cowpea Product AgEcon

Kosai, a deep-fat fried fritter made from cowpea, is an important product for economic development and poverty alleviation. Kosai is sold as street food almost exclusively by women entrepreneurs who use the money they earn from selling kosai on savings and daily expenditures for their family. In addition, cowpea is the more important indigenous African legume and kosai production uses a significant amount of cowpea. Data was collected, via personal interviews, with about 400 vendors in three different cities in the West African country of Niger. Results revealed that vendors with more experience were more likely to be successful.

Pests like the larger grain borer (P. truncatus) and the maize weevil (S. zeamis) cause significant storage losses for African maize producers. The value of storage protection to a market-oriented farmer is a function of price seasonality, value loss prevention, and their opportunity costs of capital. Evidence suggests that hermetic technologies like Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bags can be effective against these key maize storage pests, but sustainable technology transfer requires that it be profitable for producers. Cowpea is the most important indigenous African grain legume for both home use and as a cash crop. Because of its tolerance to drought it is especially important for the Sahel. Genetic transformation of cowpea with Bachilius Thurengius (Bt) genes to control pod boring insects has many advantages, but little is known of the potential consumer response. This paper analyzes and reports the results of a survey of 200 consumers in northern Nigeria in early 2003 concerning consumer awareness of and acceptance of biotechnology. Understanding the relationship between soil fertility dynamics and crop response is conceptually appealing. Even more appealing is comprehension of the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of these connections over a production surface and across seasons. Knowledge of these interactions is complicated because nutrient carryover dynamics and crop response to inputs are determined simultaneously on the one-hand, and sequentially on the other. Soybean production in narrow rows is not a novel idea. Wiggans (1939) reported yield advantages of drilled soybeans in narrow rows (8-inches) over soybeans planted in 28-inch rows. However, farmers, consultants, and extension agents face a bewildering array of information regarding optimal row widths intended to maximize return from corn and soybeans during a growing cycle. In examining demand for a product it is useful to think of consumers not as purchasing the product, but as purchasing its characteristics that provide utility. Consequently, it is important to measure the specific characteristics that consumers perceive as providing them with utility. In this article a hedonic pricing model is used to investigate the influence of different cowpea characteristics on cowpea prices in Senegal. The results provide valuable information for research institutions, producers, and traders. Drainage water management impact on farm profitability AgEcon

The representative farm planning model that is used for the 2005 Purdue University Top Farmer Crop Workshop base case was extended to include managed drainage activities in order to evaluate the impact of drainage management time on farm operations. The analysis considered two alternative enterprises: rotation corn – soybeans with and without controlled drainage activities. The baseline solution assumed that controlled drainage has 10% higher average yields than free flowing drainage, one drainage control structure is needed each 20 acres, and all drainage management work was done on good field days. Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), yield monitors, variable rate technologies (VRT) and other spatial management technologies are being used by farmers worldwide, but questions remain about the profitability of the technology and its future. This paper summarizes: 1) data on adoption of PA technology worldwide, 2) review of PA economics studies and 3) efforts to make better use of yield monitor and other sensor data in crop management. This paper compares two estimation methods of a three-stage least squares (3SLS) system of equations, corrected for spatial autocorrelation. The modeling approach is novel in that it is an extension of Anselin's (1988) seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) space-time spatial error model for panel data. An empirical comparison of the quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) estimation of the equation system, and Kelejian and Prucha's general moments (GM) estimation approach is presented. Evaluating the Effectiveness of Alternative Extension Methods: Triple-Bag Storage of Cowpeas by Small-Scale Farmers in West Africa AgEcon

This study examined two questions related to the adoption of triple-bag storage technology for farmers storing cowpeas in West Africa. First the effect of an extension program, focused on village demonstrations, on adoption was considered. Second, the effect of radio messages to augment this extension program was analyzed. The results indicate that adoption was positively affected by the extension program and radio messages do augment the effectiveness.
