Measuring Competition for Textiles: Does the United States Make the Grade? AgEcon
Welch, J. Mark; Lyford, Conrad P..
Increasing competition from foreign manufacturers threatens the viability of textile producers in the United States. This paper evaluates the U.S. competitive position in the cotton yarn segment using established quantifiable measures and provides an overall competitive assessment. The measures employed show the United States to be at a relative competitive disadvantage when compared to major international producers of cotton yarn. However, the margin of this competitive disadvantage is shown to be relatively small and in some cases, decreasing.

Consumer Heterogeneity: Does It Affect Policy Responses to the Obesity Epidemic? AgEcon
Lyford, Conrad P.; Belasco, Eric J.; Chidmi, Benaissa; Funtanilla, Margil.
The fight against obesity in the U.S. has become a priority area for policy makers due to the additional health risks and health care costs. In developing policy to lower obesity rates, it is important to accurately characterize the impact that exercise, smoking and demographic characteristics have on BMI in order to draft effective policy. This analysis uses data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFS) to evaluate the relationship between behavioral and demographic factors with BMI while explicitly accounting for individual heterogeneity by using a quantile analysis. Results suggest that the effect of exercise, smoking, occupation and race vary by BMI quantile, indicating that consumers should be treated as heterogeneous at least for...

SCHOLARSHIP AND DECISION CASES: PEDAGOGY AND STANDARDS FOR PUBLICATION AgEcon
Lyford, Conrad P.; Beierlein, James G.; Harling, Kenneth.
Case studies represent an important form of scholarly output for educators of agribusiness management. This article defines scholarship with respect to case writing. First, it explains how case studies are scholarship in the educational process. The pedagogical foundation of the case method is this method's effectiveness in developing the critical thinking skills of students. This in turn enhances learning and advances scholarly understanding. Second, it examines criteria that are used to assess the quality of cases and their accompanying teaching notes when being considered for journal publication. The standards of the International Food and Agribusiness Management Review are used to illustrate these criteria. Only by reaching these standards of...

Study of Economic Impacts Derived from 2005 to 2009 Rural Texas Community Events and Factors that Predict Spending? AgEcon
Hanagriff, Roger D.; Murova, Olga I.; Lyford, Conrad P..
In this paper, we review the tourism impact from state supported events associated with Texas Rural Economic Development program and in the process of funding measure aspects of events that are found to be related to economic value. The economic values are the result of visitor spending and extrapolated to total event attendance creates economic value. Communities receiving funding were responsible for collecting visitor surveys to measure consumer spending as well as the community completing a survey to record descriptors of the event. The overall program results were that state support represented 14 percent of the total event investment and total event value from visitor spending created approximately $7.50 return for every $1 of state funding....

VALUE OF INCREASING KERNEL UNIFORMITY AgEcon
Yoon, Byung-Sam; Brorsen, B. Wade; Lyford, Conrad P..
Kernel size uniformity is an important physical quality attribute in terms of processing efficiency, quality control, and milling yield. This study developed optimal grain sorting strategies for elevators to use to increase kernel size uniformity and determined the size of potential benefits from sorting. Cluster analysis and global optimization were used to sort grain loads to increase kernel size uniformity. Cluster analysis and global optimization increased the percent flour yield relative to no sorting by 0.13% and 0.32% respectively. Cluster analysis and global optimization increased the daily milling income relative to no sorting by 105 dollars (5%) and 266 dollars (13%) respectively.

INDUSTRY STRATEGIC PLANNING AND COORDINATION: THE CASE OF THE TEXAS VEGETABLE INDUSTRY AgEcon
Hall, Charles R.; Lyford, Conrad P..
The produce industry in Texas is currently faced with several issues that can potentially negatively effect fruit and vegetable participants. To combat these issues producers and other industry participants recently developed a task force to lead the produce industry through a detailed strategic planning process. This task force used a Framework for Industry Strategic Planning and Coordination (ISPC) developed by Lyford et al. as a model to guide its strategic planning efforts. Using this framework the task force was able to highlight the most significant issues affecting the industry and develop specific strategies and implementation plans to resolve these issues. This case study illustrates the application of ISPC and tests the overall usefulness of...

Teaching Case Study — Overcoming National Regulations Limiting International Trade: Creekstone Farms and BSE AgEcon
Harling, Kenneth; Lyford, Conrad P..
The emergence of Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) as a major food safety issue sets the situation for a firm level opportunity. The Japanese government banned imports of cattle and beef from the U.S. when it established the first cases of BSE there and refused to lift barriers because the Japanese viewed U.S. efforts to eliminate the BSE threat as inadequate. Creekstone Farms of Kentucky saw an opportunity in this situation as the Japanese and Korean governments agreed to imports of its beef if guaranteed BSE-free. The USDA has to decide whether to allow Creekstone to do this testing so that it can export its beef. The decision is difficult because many stakeholders have opposing views.

A FRAMEWORK FOR EFFECTIVE INDUSTRY STRATEGIC PLANNING AgEcon
Lyford, Conrad P.; Ricks, Donald J.; Peterson, H. Christopher; Sterns, James A..
As agricultural commodity industries strategically plan for their future, they need to consider the systemic and synergistic effects of such factors as changing government regulations, demand expansion or contraction, globalized markets, increased competitive pressures, and greater customer quality requirements. This article discusses a framework developed to help industries strategically plan within the context of these dynamic factors. This framework, based upon relevant theory and an accumulation of experiences with this type of strategic planning, provides one possible approach for addressing the strategic needs of an entire industry. In this way, a commodity industry as a whole can identify and address key industrywide strategic issues to maintain and...

A GENERAL FRAMEWORK FOR GRAIN BLENDING AND SEGREGATION AgEcon
Sivaraman, Eswar; Lyford, Conrad P.; Brorsen, B. Wade.
The Hennessy and Wahl model of optimal grain blending and segregation (GBS) is extended to the case where it is not possible to separate components within a load. Analytical solutions are not available when segregation is the optimal strategy, and so solutions are obtained with nonlinear optimization. The model is then used to determine the optimal sorting of hard red winter wheat by protein content. Most of the benefits from sorting can be obtained with only two bins.

THE EFFECT OF CONTRACTING ON PRICING DYNAMICS IN THE FED CATTLE MARKET: AN EXPERIMENTAL SIMULATION APPROACH AgEcon
Lyford, Conrad P.; Hicks, R. Todd; Ward, Clement E.; Trapp, James N.; Peel, Derrell S..
The increased amount of contracting in many agricultural markets continues to be a source of considerable controversy. Some research indicates that increased levels of contracting lead to better prices for processors/users while other research is inconclusive. This article uses an experimental economics approach to study the effects on prices of systematic variations in contracting levels using an experimental model of the fed cattle market. Using experimental economics allowed the control of contracting levels and other variables (e.g. supply levels) that are not possible using industry data. Pricing dynamics changed considerably with increased levels of contracting, but the mean price level was found to be not related to contracting levels. The...

VALUE OF INCREASING KERNEL UNIFORMITY AgEcon
Yoon, Byung-Sam; Brorsen, B. Wade; Lyford, Conrad P..
Kernel uniformity is an important quality attribute that can now be measured at low cost. This study analyzes the profitability of sorting to increase wheat kernel uniformity. Nonlinear programming is used to sort grain loads to maximize flour yield by increasing uniformity of kernel size and kernel hardness. Results of this analysis suggest increases in flour yield due to higher kernel uniformity are not enough to outweigh the costs of sorting.

INDUSTRY STRATEGIC PLANNING: KEEPING SUPPLY CHAINS COMPETITIVE AgEcon
Lyford, Conrad P.; Peterson, H. Christopher; Sterns, James A..
Agricultural industries are increasingly challenged to develop strategies that enable them, as a group of firms and industry organizations, to respond to an increasingly global marketplace. One approach used by several industries is the application of strategic planning and management tools, commonly used in a single business setting, to coordinate analysis and action at an industry level. This is accomplished through a relation-based strategic group of firms from multiple levels in the vertical supply chain. Here it is suggested that this type of strategic effort, called industry strategic planning, provides unique benefits for industries engaged in such an effort, including limiting incentives for increased concentration and vertical integration. As...
