The characterization of the soil biological quality of organic viticulture can be achieved by analyzing soil nematofauna Organic Eprints
Coll, P; Le Cadre, E; Mérot, A; Villenave, C.
Soil nematofauna is a bioindicator that can highlight changes in biological functioning when changing agricultural practices. In the present study, the effects of conversion of vineyards to organic agriculture on biological soil quality were evaluated. Twenty four conventional plots and organic plots in Cruscades (Aude) were studied: they were divided into four groups: (1) conventional, (2) converted for 7 years (Bio 7 years), (3) converted for 11 years (Bio 11) and (4) converted for 17 (Bio 17). The nematofauna was analyzed in 96 soil samples (four samples per plot) taken from the surface layer of soil (0-15 cm). The more longer the conversion of plots to organic viticulture, the higher the biological activity of the soil; it is the abundance of non-plant...

Evaluation and design of multispecies cropping systems with perennials: are current methods applicable? Organic Eprints
Rapidel, Bruno; Meziere, Delphine; Metral, Raphaël; Dupraz, Christian; Mérot, A; Allinne, Clémentine; Gary, Christian.
The existing methods are applicable to multispecies cropping systems with perennials. However, the particular features of these cropping systems highlight the drawbacks of each of them. Therefore, combining these approaches, where and when it is possible, should be preferred. Whatever the method, evaluation of the new systems requires new indicators development, to account for the multiple productions with very different timescales and serving varying objectives. Development of simple and effective sets of indicators adapted to these systems is a powerful tool to boost the design realm, for practitioners and researchers alike.

A new integrative assessment indicator for damage caused by major pests and diseases in the vineyard Organic Eprints
Delbac, L; Constant, N; Laveau, E; Thiéry, D; Smits, N; Roudet, J; Mérot, A; Wéry, J; Fermaud, M.
An original and integrative evaluation indicator has been developed to quantify the cumulated damage from major pests and diseases affecting grape bunches: downy mildew, powdery mildew, gray mould and tortricid moths. It made it possible to estimate the associated crop losses and to relate them to the plant protection strategy in different modes of production (organic farming, in-transition, conventional). Thus, overall plant losses were higher in 2012 than in 2011. The in-transition growers’ strategy, with reduced copper doses but increased numbers of sprays, led to a 20% increase in average severity on bunches (essentially due to Downy mildew). The more pragmatic approach of experienced organic growers and conventional ones (higher doses and fewer...
