The application of sewage sludge to agricultural land, a common practice to recycle nutrients in the past, is currently prohibited in organic farming due to the risk of soil contamination from pollutants (e.g. toxic and potentially toxic elements, persistent organic pollutants, etc.). Incineration or disposal to landfill of dewatered sludge is costly, leads to greenhouse gas emissions, and eliminates the possibility of nutrient recovery, especially phosphorus. Options to treat dry organic matter are combustion and gasification, among other technologies to produce ashes or chars and to recover the residues for nutrient recycling. Dependent on the technology applied as well as the input material, nutrient concentrations and concentration of contaminants vary... |

The document is the summary of IMPROVE-P results Background Organic farming systems rely on the effi cient use and recycling of available resources. Currently, some mineral nutrients like phosphorus are used only once to produce food. Subsequently, they are lost due to poor recycling of organic wastes back to farmland. Simultaneously, P balances calculated for organic farming indicate that often more P is removed with the products than applied as fertilizer. Consequently, this leads to decreasing amounts of plant available soil P. There is an urgent need to improve the recycling of P from urban areas and the food industry, back to cropland. |

Maintaining sufficient soil phosphorus (P) levels for non-limiting crop growth is challenging in organic systems since off-farm inputs of P are restricted. This study assessed the status of P on organic farms in Europe using soil test results for extractable P. Data was obtained from published literature, unpublished theses, and various national and regional databases of soil test values. Most of the data (15,506 observations) came from field scale soil tests, but in some cases (1272 observations) values had been averaged across a farm. Farm scale and field scale data were analysed separately and the impact of farm type (arable, dairy, grassland, horticulture, mixed, poultry, unknown) was assessed. Soil test results were assigned to P classes from very low... |

In order to assess the risk of the use of recycled phosphorus (P) fertilisers for organic farming, the potential accumulation of heavy metals in soil after a 200-year fertilizer application equivalent to 11 kg P ha-1 yr-1 was calculated in a mass balance approach. Both fertilizers currently allowed in organic farming and recycled P fertilizers were regarded. For heavy metals, four scenarios with two soil pH levels (pH 5 and pH 7) and two precipitation excess levels (F 0.1 and F 0.3 m yr-1) were calculated. Recycled P fertilizers like struvite, meat- and bone meal, ashes, sewage sludge and digestate, as well as phosphate rock and triple superphosphate had a higher P content and a lower heavy metal-to-P ratio than composts. Consequently, compost application... |

An efficient phosphorus (P) recycling from urban areas is becoming an increasing issue due to the scarcity of natural P deposits. In order to assess the environmental performance of different approaches of P recycling, a LCA assessment and risk assessment studies were carried out. Generally, we found the supply of recycled P-fertilisers (RPFs) to be competitive as compared to conventional sources in terms of LCA results analysed in this contribution: per kg P and with exclusion of infrastructure processes, the highest abiotic depletion potential is shown for conventional mineral fertilisers based on phosphate rocks due to the finite mineral P resources. For fossil primary energy demand, the recycled fertilisers (struvites and an ash-based fertiliser... |

The pollutant input and the risk of contamination by long-term application of recycled P fertilizers (RPFs) in European agricultural soils were estimated by a mass balance approach. Calculations based on literature data were carried out for the potentially toxic elements (PTEs) Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and for the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) PCBs, PAHs and polychlorinated dibenzo-dioxins and -furans. The PTE accumulation estimation during 200 years of fertilizer application, equivalent to 11 kg P ha-1 year-1, the mean P export via harvested products on European stockless organic farms, regarded soil background concentrations and proposed threshold concentrations. For PTEs, inputs were fertilizer application, atmospheric deposition and liming, output... |

The influence of biogas production in organic farming systems on different agricultural aspects is being researched in a field trial on the research station Gladbacherhof of the University of Giessen. The investigations took place within a whole crop rotation including 7 different crops in 8 years: two years clover grass followed by winter wheat, potatoes, rye, peas, spelt and at last summer wheat with undersown clover grass. Intercrops were sown after winter cereals and peas. This crop rotation is able to feed an average livestock husbandry in organic farming (0.8 cows ha-1). Four different fertilizing systems are being compared: 1) solid manure ploughed under before seeding of crops, 2) slurry spread out in emerging winter cereals or ploughed under to... |

System effects of biogas fermentation in organic cropping systems with and without livestock (dairy farming) were investigated from 2002-2005. In both systems no differences in yields and nutrient uptake were detected in the legume crops. In the livestock-system non legume crops of the slurry system had no higher yields but a higher nitrogen uptake (6 %) than the stable manure system. Slurry-fermentation had no effect on yields and nitrogen uptake. The inclusion of crop residues in the fermentation system increased the nitrogen uptake about by 10 % and reduced the nitrate leaching potential by ca. 10 %. The inclusion of external substrates lead to a further increase in nitrogen yield of 10 %, but to no significant increase in dry matter yields.... |

One of the key issues in organic vegetable production in comparison to conventional production is the approach to soil and soil fertility, as is expressed in the regulations on permitted fertilizers and soil amendments. Vegetable crops are characterized by high nutrient contents and high production levels and consequently require high inputs of nutrients, mainly nitrogen and potassium. Furthermore, the cropping period of most vegetable crops is rather short in comparison to arable crops. The current fertilization strategy in practice is characterized by a base dressing of animal manure or compost, and top dressings that are applied throughout the growing season, using a variety of additional fertilizers like keratins (feather-, horn- and hair meal) or... |

Six phosphorus (P) fertilizers recycled from sewage sludge [Struvite SSL, Struvite AirPrex,P-RoC, Mephrec, Pyrolysis coal and Ash (Mg-SSA)] were tested for their plant availability in potted soil of pH 7.2 under greenhouse conditions. The crop sequence simulated a rotation of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), maize (Zea maize L.), and ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Other P fertilizer treatments included: Phosphate Rock (PR), Calcium dihydrogen phosphate [Ca(H2PO4)2], and an unfertilized control. Additionally, soil was regularly inoculated with two strains of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR; Pseudomonas sp. Proradix, and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens) to test their ability to increase P availability to plants. Sequential P fractionation was... |
