Opportunities for farming in alpine countries – pathways to truly grassland-based beef and milk production in Austria and Switzerland Organic Eprints
Weisshaidinger, R.; Frick, R.; Moakes, S.; Müller, A.; Bartel, A.; Schwank, O.; Biedermann, R.; Stolze, M..
Farming in the alpine countries of Austria and Switzerland fulfils important economic, socio-cultural and ecological functions for society. However, even though both Austria and Switzerland have increasingly focused their agricultural policy towards ecology, in both countries negative environmental impacts of agriculture still have to be reduced massively.

Upcycling food leftovers and grass resources through livestock: Impact of livestock system and productivity Organic Eprints
van Hal, O.; de Boer, I.J.M.; Müller, A.; de Vries, S.; Erb, K.-H.; Schader, C.; Gerrits, W.J.J.; van Zanten, H.H.E..
Consumption of animal-source food is criticised, among other reasons, for its relatively high environmental impact. It is, however, increasingly acknowledged that livestock can contribute to nutrition security if they upcycle low-opportunity-cost feed (LCF) – food waste, food processing by-products and grass resources – into nutritious animal-source food. So far, however, no study explored the allocation question “to which livestock should we feed what LCF to maximise livestock's contribution to human nutrition”. Here we optimise the use of the LCF available in the EU, using a model that assigns LCF to those livestock systems that maximise animal protein production. We included the five most common livestock systems in the EU – pigs, laying hens, broilers,...

Landwirtschaftliche Fläche als Lebensraum für Wildbienen Organic Eprints
Ostermaier, Miriam; Müller, A.; Stöckli, Sibylle; Pfiffler, L..
During intensificaton of agriculture plant diversity decreased parallel with the decline of wildbee species richness. But wildbees are important pollinators for different crops and wild plants. Farming intensity and landscape infrastructure are key-drivers altering species composition and population densities of wildbees. We found, that extensive meadows and pastures, herbaceous strips beside hedgerows, flowering stripes and organic cereal fields can be valuable habitats for wildbees, also for endangered and oligolectic ones. The habitat-types included various plant species and landscape elements that are meaningful for many wildbee species.

Prospects for macro-level analysis of agricultural innovation systems to enhance the eco-efficiency of farming in developing countries Organic Eprints
Grovermann, C.; Wossen, T.; Müller, A.; Nichterlein, K..
Agricultural innovation is an essential component in the transition to more sustainable and resilient farming systems across the world. Innovations generally emerge from collective intelligence and action, but innovation systems are often poorly understood. This study explores the properties of innovation systems and their contribution to increased eco-efficiency in agriculture. Using aggregate data and econometric methods, the eco-efficiency of 79 countries was computed and a range of factors relating to research, extension, business and policy was examined. Despite data limitations, the analysis produced significant results. Extension plays an important role in improving the eco-efficiency of agriculture, while agricultural research, under current...

Submission for Koronivia joint work on agriculture (KJWA) on topics 2(b) and 2(c) for SBI/SBSTA 50 Organic Eprints
Müller, A.; Leippert, F.; Lichtenegger, M.; Herren, M..
Background At this Koronivia joint work on agriculture (KJWA) in-session workshop in Bonn (SBI/SBSTA 50), adaptation, adaptation co-benefits and resilience (2(b)), as well as the role of soils and integrated agricultural systems in particular (2(c)), will be at the centre of discussions. This submission provides first insights on these topics based on an ongoing scientific review of the empirical evidence for agroecology to tackle climate change in agriculture. The rationale for this review is the need for increased evidence on agroecology’s potential to build resilience to climate change. Its objective is therefore to assess the state of scientific knowledge on this question. Agroecological agricultural systems, for short, are characterised by following...

Avaliação microbiológica da água em assentamentos da reforma agrária no município de Candiota, estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil MV&Z
Müller, A.; Rockembach, C. S.; Souza, C. N.; Girolometto, G.; Schuch, L. F. D.; Pinto, F. R..
