Small forests, big ambitions and a hard reality - Community Forestry in Nepal AgEcon
Rai, Chandra; Bigsby, Hugh R.; MacDonald, Ian.
Community forestry in Nepal is intended to reduce poverty by sustainable management of forests. Timber is one of the most high-value forest products, especially in the case of Sal (Shorea robusta) forests in the Terai region of Nepal. Despite having several advantages, including high value forests on fertile land, connection with transportation networks, and being close to regional markets, community forests in the Terai region produce little or no timber from their Sal forests. This research looks at what is affecting the production of Sal timber from community forests. Three aspects of community forest user groups (CFUG) are examined using institutional economics, transaction cost economics and micro-economics. First, the scale of CFUG operations is...

Threats from Illegal Fishing AgEcon
MacDonald, Ian.
Before I start my presentation on the very important subject of illegal fishing, I do want to congratulate Dr Meryl Williams on her appointment to the Chair of the Board of Management of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research and President of its Policy Advisory Council. I am very pleased to note that for the first time we have in the position someone who does have a very distinguished background in fisheries. I also am delighted to have someone there who lived in the same small country town as I did in Queensland. Fish, fisheries, fisheries management, oceans and seas are particularly important for a country like Australia where our marine jurisdiction is about twice the size of the nation’s landmass. One of the major differences...

How Important is Reputation for New Zealand Wine Makers? AgEcon
Bicknell, Kathryn; MacDonald, Ian.
The wine industry in New Zealand has been maturing over the past few decades, with consumers becoming more sophisticated and wineries responding by increasing their production of premium varieties. In addition, there have been several legal changes and subsequent changes to the distribution and marketing of wine in New Zealand that have made wine more widely available. It is therefore an interesting and dynamic time to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the relative effects of regional reputation and producer-specific quality on the willingness to pay for domestically produced premium table wine in New Zealand. Previous empirical work suggests that New Zealand consumers rely on both expert opinion and regional reputation when determining their...

A Hedonic Price Analysis for the New Zealand Wine Industry: Preliminary Results AgEcon
Bicknell, Kathryn; Friesen, Lana; MacDonald, Ian.
This paper presents preliminary results from a hedonic price analysis of premium wines in New Zealand over the vintages 1994 – 2003. Implicit prices are presented for a sensory quality rating, as well as wine variety and regional reputation. Results show that the price premium associated with Michael Cooper's five-star quality rating is highly significant and increasing in magnitude over the study period. Trends in regional and varietal preferences are also explored.

Who are Controlling Community Forestry User Groups in Nepal? Scrutiny of Elite Theory AgEcon
Yadav, Bhagwan Dutta; Bigsby, Hugh R.; MacDonald, Ian.
Nepal has established community forestry institutions to manage natural resources at the local community level under the assumption that there will be better management than under Government agencies. However, community forestry has not been entirely successful as it has not addressed the needs of poor and marginalised groups. The main goal of this study is to examine how Nepalese social structure guides the structure of the Executive Committee (EC) of Community Forestry User Groups and in particular, whether the EC is dominated by elite groups that could in turn hinder the needs of poor and marginalised groups. This paper uses data from the middle hill district of Baglung, Nepal. Statistical analysis indicates that decision-making is dominated by the...
