Winter cover crops impact on plant nutrients in an organic crop rotation Organic Eprints
Talgre, Liina; Eremeev, Viacheslav; Tein, Berit; Madsen, Helena; Luik, Anne.
In crop rotations winter cover crops (WCC) can play a certain role in organic matter and plant nutrient formation. Under Nordic conditions the selection of crops for winter cover crops is quite limited. The aim of the present research was to explain the biomass and nutrients (N, P and K) formation by certain winter cover crops in an organic crop rotation. The effects of WCC on the following main crop yields were monitored.

Winter cover crops decrease weediness in organic cropping systems Organic Eprints
Madsen, Helena; Talgre, Liina; Eremeev, Vyacheslav; Alaru, Maarika; Maeorg, Erkki; Luik, Anne.
By inserting cover crops into organic cropping systems, the number and biomass of weeds decreased. Winter cover crops clearly have a suppressive effect on weeds by providing competition for light, water and space.

Kuidas talvised vahekultuurid mõjutavad mulla umbrohuseemnete sisaldust Organic Eprints
Kuht, Jaan; Talgre, Liina; Madsen, Helena; Eremeev, Viacheslav; Loit, Evelin; Luik, Anne.

Do green manures as winter cover crops impact the weediness and crop yield in an organic crop rotation? Organic Eprints
Madsen, Helena; Talgre, Liina; Eremeev, Viacheslav; Alaru, Maarika; Kauer, Karin; Luik, Anne.
The effects of different winter cover crops and their combination with composted cattle manure on weeds and crop yields were investigated within a five-field crop rotation (barley undersown with red clover, red clover, winter wheat, pea, potato) in three organic cropping systems. The control system (Org 0) followed the rotation. In organic systems Org I and Org II the winter cover crops were used as follows: ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. in 2011/2012) and a mixture of winter oilseed-rape (Brassica napus ssp. oleifera var. biennis) and winter rye (Secale cereale L.) in 2012/2013 before pea; winter oilseed rape before potato and winter rye before barley. In Org II system composted cattle manure was also applied. In comparison with the control system, the...

Winter cover crops improve soil properties in organic cropping systems. Organic Eprints
Talgre, Liina; Madsen, Helena; Eremeev, Viacheslav; Alaru, Maarika; Reintam, Endla; Kahu, Greete; Loit, Evelin; Luik, Anne.
An introduction of winter cover crops (wcc) into the crop rotation had a positive impact on soil quality in organic cropping systems. Wcc alone and in combination with composted manure enriched soil with organic matter, activated soil life (increased number of earthworms and higher soil microbial activity - FDA), increased soil pH value, and supported nutrient cycling and soil formation.

THE EFFECT OF FARMING SYSTEM ON SOIL MICROBIAL HYDROLYTICAL ACTIVITY Organic Eprints
Madsen, Helena; Talgre, Liina; Eremeev, Viacheslav; Sanches De Cima, Diego; Luik, Anne.
The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of conventional and organic farming on soil hydrolytic activity (FDA). The experiment consisted of five-field crop rotation with three organic systems: Org 0 without winter cover crops (as control), Org I with winter cover crops and Org II with winter cover crops plus composted manure; and two conventional farming systems: Conv I as control (no fertiliser use) and Conv II (with mineral N). The results show increase of FDA in all systems in 2013. Within the average of 2012-2014 the FDA is the lowest in Conv. I and the highest in Org II system.

Soil weed seed bank and factors influencing the number of weeds at the end of conversion period to organic production Organic Eprints
Kuht, Jaan; Eremeev, Viacheslav; Talgre, Liina; Madsen, Helena; Toom, Merili; Maeorg, Erkki; Luik, Anne.
In 2008 an experiment was set up on the field in Eerika experimental station (Estonian University of Life Sciences) as a 5-field crop rotation: red clover, winter wheat, pea, potato and barley undersown with red clover. The objective of the study was to measure the content of weed seeds in the soil and to evaluate the diversity of the species at the end of the period of converting to organic production. In conventional farming systems without fertilizer (Conv I) and conventional farming with mineral fertilizer (Conv II) herbicides were used for weed control. All the crops in Conv II system received P 25 kg ha-1 and K 95 kg ha-1, but the application rates of mineral nitrogen fertilizer differed. In organic systems (Org I – organic farming based on winter...

Talvised vahekultuurid parandavad mulda ja kultuuride saagikust Organic Eprints
Talgre, Liina; Eremeev, Viacheslav; Reintam, Endla; Tein, Berit; Sanchez de Cima, Diego; Madsen, Helena; Alaru, Maarika; Luik, Anne.
The influence of green manures as winter cover crops and these combined with composted cattle manure on soil properties, biodiversity indicators and crop yield was studied in a crop rotation experiment in three organic systems at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. The use of green manures as winter cover crops and their combination with cattle manure brought tendencies to improve the soil quality: increased content of organic carbon, pH, soil water permeability, soil water holding capacity, soil microbial activity and abundance of earthworms and ground dwelling arthropods. Depending on the year, yield level of all main crops was increased due to improved soil properties caused by green manures.
