WEATHER INSURANCE TO PROTECT SPECIALTY CROPS AGAINST COSTS OF IRRIGATION IN DROUGHT YEARS AgEcon
Mafoua, Edouard.
The purpose of this research is to develop a rainfall insurance product to insure irrigation costs applied to NAP crops, and to compare the efficacy of this insurance on a dollar basis relative to conventional crop insurance. An economic model is developed that illustrates the relationship between rainfall, crop yields, costs of irrigation and profits.

SCOPE AND SCALE ECONOMIES FOR MULTI-PRODUCT FARMS: FIRM-LEVEL PANEL DATA ANALYSIS AgEcon
Mafoua, Edouard; Hossain, Ferdaus.
This study used the flexible fixed cost quadratic function to analyze the cost structure of multi-product farms using farm-level panel data. The robustness of estimated parameters are examined using four panel data estimators. Results suggest that scale economies remain significant in Illinois farming. An increase in soybean acreage reduces the marginal cost of producing corn. Firm-specific effects, that indicate the levels of fixed costs, are found to be positive and significant.

ECONOMIES OF SCOPE AND SCALE OF MULTI-PRODUCT U.S. CASH GRAIN FARMS: A FLEXIBLE FIXED-COST QUADRATIC (FFCQ) MODEL ANALYSIS AgEcon
Mafoua, Edouard.
The evidence about the magnitude of scope and scale economies in U.S. cash grain farming is revealed from the empirical estimation of the flexible fixed cost quadratic (FFCQ) model. This framework explicitly disaggregates the crop output vector to take the heterogeneity of output and gives insight to farmers to answer interesting questions such as: Are three-crop farms more cost efficient than two-crop or single-crop farms? How important are economies of scope (fixed-cost and variable-cost components) in two-crop farms and three-crop farms? Two-crop farms as well as three-crop farms exhibit overall economies of scale and scope in all four-size categories that increase with the farm size. They are able to lower the cost of producing crops in the same...

Cost-Effectiveness of Alternative Environmental Policies for Reducing Non-Point Source Pollution in Public Water Supplies AgEcon
Mafoua, Edouard; Hornbaker, Robert H..
This study predicts farmers' response to policy alternatives aimed at alleviating non-point source pollution problems in a municipal water supply in Pike County, Illinois. The framework integrated simulation models with optimization models of the watershed to assess environmental policies. Results show how farmers are likely to alter agricultural management practices.

EFFECTS OF WEATHER EVENTS ON LOSS RATIOS FOR CROP INSURANCE PRODUCTS: A COUNTY-LEVEL PANEL DATA ANALYSIS. AgEcon
Mafoua, Edouard; Turvey, Calum G..
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship over time between specific weather events (drought, excessive rainfall, cold weather, etc…) and loss ratios for crop insurance products. The study also investigates the impact of rainfall and extreme heat on field and fruit crop insurance loss ratios.
