The use of actometry and electronic nose devices to assess the locomotor activity of two species of Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Heit,Guillermo; Messina,Valeria; Mareggiani,Graciela; Cohen,Rosa; Carrizo,Paola.
The effect of odor signals on the locomotor activity of Cycloneda sanguinea and Harmonia axyridis was evaluated using two different actometric devices. The purpose of the analysis was to differentiate between the responses elicited by direct contact with the substrates and the responses that occurred if the coccinellids were exposed only to volátiles and had no direct substrate contact. The odor profile of the environmental volátiles (semiochemicals) in the bioassays was analyzed using an electronic nose (Modular Sensor System Moses II). The treatments used included volatiles emitted by pepper leaves (healthy or infested with Myzus persicae), M. persicae molts and honeydew, and healthy leaves treated with an artificial inducer of the systemic acquired...

Impact of odor signáis on Cycloneda sanguínea (Coleóptera: Coccinellidae) searching behavior Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Heit,Guillermo E; Cohén,Graciela; Mareggiani,Graciela.
Volatile infochemicals generated by aphids, their host plants, or from the interaction between host plant and herbivore (herbivore-induced volatile plant compounds) are among the environmental stimuli used by predators to lócate prey The objective of this study was to evalúate the olfactometric response of the predator Cycloneda sanguínea (Coleóptera: Coccinellidae) to volatile infochemicals associated with the tomato plant, Lycopersicon esculentum Mili. (Solanaceae), and the aphid prey Myzus persicae Sulzer (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Predator behavior was evaluated in an airflow olfactometer at 24 ± 2°C with 65 ± 10% relative humidity and a 16 h photoperiod. Latency time and the number of visits to the active chamber where the odor source was located were...

Locomotor activity of Cycloneda sanguinea (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) exposed to volatile semiochemicals and to direct contact with the odour source Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Heit,Guillermo E.; Sardoy,Pedro; Cohen,Graciela R.; Mareggiani,Graciela.
Cycloneda sanguinea (Linnaeus) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is an opportunistic polyphagous predator and when aphids dominate its menu, a complex foraging behaviour can be expected. An active movement characterized by a high locomotor activity plays an important role in the search of this prey. The behaviour of C. sanguinea adults exposed to volatile semiochemicals emitted by Capsicum annuum Linnaeus (Solanaceae) substrates, healthy or infested with Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), or in direct contact with these substrates was here analyzed. The treatments evaluated were: A) high aphid-infested pepper leaves, B) low aphid-infested pepper leaves, C) healthy pepper leaves and D) control. Locomotor activity was not significantly different among...
