ALTERNATIVE CALIBRATION AND AUCTION INSTITUTIONS FOR PREDICTING CONSUMER WILLINGNESS-TO-PAY FOR NON-GENETICALLY MODIFIED CORN CHIPS AgEcon
Lusk, Jayson L.; Daniel, M. Scott; Mark, Darrell R.; Lusk, Christine L..
This study explores two important issues in experimental economics: calibration and auction institution. Consumer willingness-to-pay bids for corn chips made with non-genetically modified ingredients are elicited from a 1st price and 2nd price auction. Results suggest that responses to scale differential questions, in a survey, accurately predict consumer willingness-to-pay bids. The 2 nd price auction induces a greater percentage of marginal bidders to offer a positive bid than a 1st price auction. However, average bid levels in the 1st and 2nd price auctions were not statistically different from one other. In a small and unrepresentative sample, 70 percent of student participants were unwilling to pay to exchange a bag of genetically modified corn chips...

SURVIVING THE FIRST YEAR IN EXTENSION AGRIBUSINESS: WHAT AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS PH.D.S DON'T PREPARE US FOR AgEcon
Mark, Darrell R..
The objective of this paper is to contribute to an increasingly important dialogue about the differences between agricultural economics and agribusiness and how graduate degrees in agricultural economics prepare faculty for agribusiness positions. The paper focuses on the need for applied agribusiness management training in agricultural economics graduate programs, the challenges that new faculty with agribusiness extension appointments face, and balancing extension, research, and teaching responsibilities. Suggestions are offered for providing formal training in extension/outreach functions during graduate school through coursework or apprenticeships. The opportunities and difficulties associated with building a new agribusiness extension program are...

Ethanol and Meat in the U.S.: A Multi-Market Analysis AgEcon
Bhattacharya, Suparna; Azzam, Azzeddine M.; Mark, Darrell R..
Since corn is the primary feedstock used for producing ethanol in the U.S., and ethanol production yields byproducts that can be fed to livestock in combination with corn, addressing the effect of ethanol production on meat markets should consider not only demand and supply interdependence between corn, ethanol, and ethanol byproducts; but also demand and supply interdependence between different types of meats. This paper develops a multi-market equilibrium displacement model to account for the interdependence. Six markets are considered: beef, pork, poultry, corn, ethanol, and ethanol byproducts. Results show that poultry is the most sensitive to ethanol production, followed by beef and pork.

IDENTIFYING ECONOMIC RISK IN CATTLE FEEDING AgEcon
Mark, Darrell R.; Schroeder, Ted C.; Jones, Rodney D..
Closeout data from two western Kansas commercial feedlots are examined to determine how cattle prices, feed costs, and animal performance impact the variability of cattle feeding profits. The relative impacts of these factors are studied across sex, placement weight, and placement month using standardized beta coefficients. Feeder cattle prices have a greater impact on profit variability for spring and fall placements. The effect of animal performance on variability of cattle feeding profits is greater for fall placements. Results suggest that fed cattle and feeder cattle prices should be emphasized in managing the overall risk in cattle feeding because they are the largest contributors to profit variability.

CONSUMER WILLINGNESS-TO-PAY FOR PORK PRODUCED UNDER AN INTEGRATED MEAT SAFETY SYSTEM AgEcon
Boland, Michael A.; Fox, John A.; Mark, Darrell R..
The objective is to estimate consumer willingness-to-pay (WTP) for pork chops produced under an integrated program which is designed to reduce the incidence of Salmonella. A double-bounded model is estimated to determine Kansas and Indiana consumers WTP for these pork chops. The median WTP is $4.92 per pound.
