Eudendrium pocaruquarum, a new species of athecate hydroid referable to the family Eudendriidae, is described from the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The species is very similar to the widespread Eudendrium ramosum (Linnaeus, 1758), differing from it in the smaller size of the large microbasic euryteles. Longstanding problems in the systematics of eudendriid hydroids are noted, and the inadequacies of many early descriptions of species are discussed. The nematocysts provide a supplementary character for discrimination of species of Eudendrium, although information on the cnidome appears to have been sometimes misinterpreted in literature. |

A cladistic study was carried out on known species of the characteristically Antarctic genus Oswaldella, adopting as outgroups some other genera included in the family Kirchenpaueriidae. The analysis resulted in a cladogram with low CI in which no relationship between genera can be depicted. However, the hypothesis of monophyly of the genus Oswaldella is corroborated, being supported in our cladogram by five synapomorphies (although all are homoplastic with other taxa or reversed within the species of the genus). The basal relationships of the genus are uncertain, but three species groups are distinguishable within Oswaldella: 1) the O. incognita group, 2) the O. antarctica group, and 3) a clade formed by (O. garciacarrascosai, O. elongata ( O. blanconae... |

The systematics of Hydrozoa is considered from the viewpoint of logical consistency between phylogeny and classification. The validity of the nominal taxon Hydroidomedusae (including all groups of Hydrozoa except the Siphonophorae) is discussed with regard to its distinctness and inclusive relationships. In general, phylogenetic systematic evidence suggest that the use of the term Hydroidomedusae is inappropriate given our current level of understanding. It is concluded that no new, or resurrected, names are necessary before or until a broader phylogenetic revision of the Hydrozoa is accomplished. |
