Monocelididae and Archimonocelididae (Platyhelminthes Proseriata) from South Sulawesi (Indonesia) and Northern Australia with biogeographical remarks OMA
Martens, P.M.; Curini-Galletti, M.C..
Thirteen new species of the Monocelididae and three Archimonocelididae from South Sulawesi and North Australia are described. More than 2/3 of the species belong to the subfamily Minoninae; among them, seven pertain to the genus <i>Duplominona</i> which in tropical areas seems to be the dominant genus among the Proseriata, colonizing a wide range of habitats.

A reappraisal of the systematics of the Monocelididae (Platyhelminthes, Proseriata): inferences from rDNA sequences OMA
Litvaitis, M.K.; Curini-Galletti, M.C.; Martens, P.M.; Kocher, T.D..
The current classification system for the Monocelididae which is based on the character "presence or absence of an accessory prostatoid organ" divides the family into two subfamilies, namely the Minoninae and the Monocelididinae. However, other characters relating to the structure of the male copulatory bulb and to karyotypes do not support this division. Monocelidid male copulatory bulbs can be either of the simplex or the duplex-type, and if this character is mapped onto the current classification, then both subfamilies contain species with either type of copulatory bulb. We therefore decided to construct an independent phylogeny for the Monocelididae using nucleotide-sequence data of the gene coding for the 26/28S rDNA. Distance and parsimony-based...

New species of <i>Archilina</i> Ax 1959 (Platyhelminthes Proseriata) from the Red Sea and the Caribbean OMA
Curini-Galletti, M.C.; Martens, P.M..
Four new species of the genus <i>Archilina</i> Ax are described from tropical areas: <i>A. euglypta</i> n. sp. and <i>A. batiae</i> n. sp. from Red Sea; <i>A. stylifera</i> n. sp. and <i>A. opisthobursa</i> n. sp. from the Carribean (Puerto Rico). The karyotypes of all species are given: three of them have karyotypes derived from the basic set of the family Monocelididae. A sister-species relationship is proposed for the Carribean species based on the backwater position of the bursa. Because of this feature, the genus diagnosis is modified. The two Carribean species are considered as a separate evolutionary line within the genus <i>Archilina</i>

Phylogeny of the digonoporid Proseriata OMA
Martens, P.M.; Schockaert, E.R..
From a comparative study of the ultrastructure of the hard parts in the copulatory organ of the Proseriata, E. Martens (1984) concluded for the monocelidid genera she studied that in all except the genus <i>Archimonocelis</i>, the spines and styles are basal lamina differentiations: the autapomorphy for the monophylum Monocelididae.<i>Archimonocelis</i> has intracellular hard parts as in all other Proseriata, clearly the plesiomorphic condition. At the same time it was also found from a karyological viewpoint that there are arguments that <i>Archimonocelis</i> does not belong to the Monocelididae at all.

On the anatomy of <i>Gnosonesima mediterranea</i> sp.n. from Corsica (Plathelminthes, Lecithoepitheliata) with special emphasis on its genito-intestinal connections OMA
Martens, P.M.; Schockaert, E.R..
<i>Gnosonesima mediterranea</i> sp. n. from algae in the Bay of Calvi (Corsica) is described. It is the first record of a <i>Gnosonesima</i>-species from the Mediterranean. The pharynx and the genital organs are extensively described at the light microscopic level from 1 µm Epon sections. The male "accessory organ" is revealed to be an andro-genito-intestinal connection with a high similarity with the female genito-intestinal connection. The taxonomic position of the Lecithoepitheliata is discussed.

Three new <i>Duplominona</i> species (Turbellaria, Monocelididae, Minoninae) from the Mediterranean OMA
Martens, P.M..
During several intensive collecting campaigns in 1982, 1983 and 1984 at the "Station de Recherches Sous-Marines et Océanographiques" (STARESO) at Calvi (Corsica) about 200 species of marine micro-Turbellaria have been observed. Most of the collecting sites are infralittoral, down to 40 m depth and more, the majority of them with sandy bottoms and some with algae. In general species diversity was high but population densities were low, only a few individuals of each species having been found. In the present paper, three new species of the genus <i>Duplominona</i> (Monocelididae, Minoninae) from infralittoral habitats are described: <i>D. paucispina</i> sp. n., <i>D. corsicana</i> sp. n. and <i>D....

Turbellaria from Somalia: 4. The genus <i>Pseudomonocelis</i> Meixner, 1943 OMA
Schockaert, E.R.; Martens, P.M..
The genus <i>Pseudomonocelis</i> is treated in a monographic way, with the provisory re-introduction of <i>P. agilis</i> . A comprehensive description of all representatives of the genus is given, including two new species from the neighbourhood of Mogadiscio, Somalia, <i>P. pardii</i> and <i>P. cavernicola</i> . Both species have a muscular vagina and a large bursa lying behind the female duct. <i>P. pardii</i> is further characterised by the fact that the vagina ends in a muscular canal which opens anteriorly into the bursa and posteriorly receives the oviducts where the common female duct begins. It also has an extremely muscular penial organ. The most striking feature of <i>P....

The importance of turbellarians in the marine meiobenthos: a review OMA
Martens, P.M.; Schockaert, E.R..
Recent data and opinions on meiofaunal ecology are briefly reviewed; and from scattered data, the place of turbellarians in the meiobenthic community is discussed. Turbellarian diversity is of the same magnitude higher in sandy habitats than in muddy bottoms. In sand, turbellarian diversity is of the same magnitude as that of other important meiofaunal taxa, while densities range between 7-25% of the total meiofauna. Mean individual turbellarian dry weight seems to be four times that of nematodes and in sandy habitats turbellarian biomass may be equal to or exceed that of nematodes. Most turbellarian species may be considered as predators and in this respect may take the place occupied by macrofaunal species in muddy sediments.

Horizontal distribution of the Plathelminthes in a sandy beach of the Belgian coast OMA
Jouk, P.E.H.; Martens, P.M.; Schockaert, E.R..
Studies of the horizontal distribution of the Plathelminthes in sandy beaches have up to now mainly been carried out on the German island of Sylt where the beaches consist of a steep "Prallhang" and a flat wadden area. Beaches of the Belgian coast are very flat, only gently sloping and with a different sediment compared to the Sylt beaches. This study reports on the distribution of the turbellarians in such a flat beach; the discussion is mainly focussed on the comparison with the results of the German investigators.

Taxonomy and phylogeny of the Archimonocelididae Meixner, 1938 (Platyhelminthes, Proseriata) OMA
Martens, P.M.; Curini-Galletti, M.C..
The family Archimonocelididae Meixner, 1938 has been revised. The family contains two subfamilies, each comprising two genera: the Archimonocelididae with <i>Archimonocelis</i> Meixner, 1938 and <i>Meidiama</i> Marcus, 1946, and the Calviriinae subfam. nov. with <i>Asilomaria</i> Karling, 1966 and <i>Calviria</i> gen. nov. with 20, 2, 1 and 3 species, respectively, 13 of which are new to science. The type species of the family is redescribed. Material of all the Archimonocelididae genera has been studied and supplementary remarks are made on some known species. The karyotype of 14 species is described.<i>Archimonocelis</i> has a cosmopolitan distribution while <i>Meidiama</i> is...

Karyological study of three Monocelis-species, and description of a new species from the Mediterranean, <i>Monocelis longistyla</i> sp.n. (Monocelididae, Plathelminthes) OMA
Martens, P.M.; Curini-Galletti, M.C..
<i>Monocelis longistyla</i> sp.n. from littoral sandy habitats of the Mediterranean is described. The karyotypes of <i>Monocelis fusca, M. lineata</i> and <i>M. longistyla</i> sp.n. were analysed. A basic karyotype for the genus Monocelis is postulated and its probable evolution from the basic karyotype of the family Monocelididae and within the genus is discussed. The karyotype of <i>M. longistyla</i> seems to have evolved from the basic Monocelis karyotype by pericentric inversions. However from the analysis of the karyotype in different populations of <i>M. lineata</i> the species appeared not to be homogeneous (European populations versus the Canadian population).

Comparison of three different extraction methods for Turbellaria OMA
Martens, P.M..
Three different extraction methods for Turbellaria were compared, 2 of which use living material. The first method is based on sea-water ice treatment (Uhlig-method), the second employs decantation of narcotized fauna (MgCl2-method). The third method is the Barnett-method, performed on preserved material. Three series of 12 samples each were analysed quantitatively. Turbellaria were counted and identified to the order level. For the turbellarian population as a whole, the numbers of individuals extracted alive (Uhlig- or MgCl2-method) was less than 50% of the number extracted from the preserved samples (Barnett-method). Differences between Uhlig-method and MgCl2-method were not...

Sand dwelling Turbellaria from the Netherlands Delta area OMA
Martens, P.M.; Schockaert, E.R..
Sand dwelling Turbellaria from the Delta of the Rivers Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt have been investigated. Thirty-eight samples taken from littoral and sublittoral stations in the Grevelingen, Eastern and Western Scheldt have been analysed. Thirty-three species were recorded (Acoela were not considered); twenty-four of them are new for the area and seven new species are described. Density and diversity of Turbellaria were higher in the Eastern Scheldt than in the Western Scheldt or in the Lake Grevelingen. A maximum density of 82 ind./100 cm³ was noted. A tentative calculation on relative abundance of the representatives of the different Turbellaria orders is established. Proseriata seem to be dominant in the localities studied.

Meccanismi di Evoluzione del Cariotipo nei Monocelididi (Turbellaria Proseriata) OMA
Curini-Galletti, M.C.; Martens, P.M.; Puccinelli, I..
Mechanisms of karyotype evolution in the Monocelididae (<i>Turbellaria Proseriata</i>). Within the Proseriata (Turbellaria: Seriata), the family Monocelididae displays several interesting patterns of chromosomal evolution. A basic set of n = 3 -made up or one large metacentric, one medium-sized metacentric and one small clearly heterobrachial chromosome -has been detected. It is widely distributed in species pertaining to both the subfamilies in which the Monocelididae are subdivided. From this basic set, other complements -either with n = 3 or n > 3 -would be originated.Several karyological mechanisms or common occurrence within the family (translocations, small chromosome rearrangements involving the centromere, genome growth) have been...

On the morphology and karyology of the genus <i>Archilopsis</i> (Meixner) (Platyhelminthes, Proseriata) OMA
Martens, P.M.; Curini-Galletti, M.C.; Puccinelli, I..
Two new <i>Archilopsis</i> species are described: <i>Archilopsis marifuga</i> sp. n. and <i>Archilopsis arenaria</i> sp. n.; <i>Archilopsis unipunctata</i> (Fabricius, 1826) and <i>Archilopsis spinosa</i> (Jensen, 1878) are redescribed. The latter taxon is re-established. The descriptions are based on morphological and karyological data. The four species of the genus can unequivocally be recognized by the morphology of the cirrus and the presence or absence of a stylet. The genus <i>Archilopsis</i> is regarded as a monophyletic group with at least two autapomorphies. The relationship between the four species is discussed and a cladogram for the genus proposed. The existence of two...
