Created in 1986, the REPAMO network (Network of mollusc pathology), is a national zoosanitary surveillance network of shellfish health status along the French coasts. Its activities are in keeping with two European Directives, 91 /67/EEC and 95/70/EC and are a patt of the institutional tasks ofIfremer. The aims of the network are to prevent the introduction and spread of exotic pathogens and to survey the evolution of notifiable pathogens already present in France. The network focused on the survey of listed diseases (bonamiosis and marteiliosis of flat oyster) in two areas under agreement process (Banc de Granville and zone X). In 2004, no sample couId be analysed to these two areas because of the difficulty to obtain flat oysters (sparse oyster beds,...

GIS in support to data analysis for enhanced sustainability of shrimp farming in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam ArchiMer
Populus, Jacques; Nutpramoon, Raweewan; Martin, Jean-louis; Raux, Pascal; Auda, Yves; Son, Hoang.
Over the last twenty years, extensive shrimp aquaculture has dramatically expanded in the coastal fringe of the Mekong Delta. This occurred primarily at the expense of the mangrove, already severely affected by the Vietnam war. More recently, paddy land has been reclaimed for shrimp aquaculture, a higher currency earner. However, production collapses have frequently occurred and the overall yield has remained far below the expectations for traditional farming. A number of parameters enter into play in the success of this activity, summarized in two questions: i) is the Mekong deltaïc environment - under high continental pressure - suitable to shrimp farming, ii) if not, is it possible to adapt the low technicity of rural poor farmers to reach economic...

Characterization of summer mortalities of C. gigas oyster in France in relation to environmental parameters ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick; Ropert, Michel; Bedier, Edouard; Costil, K. S.; Dubois, Brice; Degremont, Lionel; Bouget, Jean-francois; Martin, Jean-louis; Enriquez-diaz, M.; Faury, Nicole; Le Moine, Olivier; Renault, Tristan; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Huvet, Arnaud; Moal, Jeanne; Samain, Jean-francois.
Field characterization of summer mortality was performed in France in the frame of the Morest project. Natural and hatchery spat were compared between three oyster production areas in France. Regardless of the natural or hatchery origin, oysters died during the reproduction period after temperature reaches 19 degree C. Thus, in southern areas, temperature accelerated gametogenesis of small spat (10mm) as well as adults, and mortality appeared for the two age classes. In contrast, sexual maturation proceeded more slowly in northern where spat mortality was lower compared to 18 months old oysters. However, critical gametogenesis and temperature were not sufficient to induce mortalities, as observed in examples with stable environment. Alternatively sediment...

Gendronneau, Maud; Haure, Joel; Jeanneret, Hélène; Le Merrer, Yoann; Lequette, Camille; Lomakine, Cédric; Martin, Jean-louis; Papin, Mathias; Ponthoreau, Catherine; Robin, Marc.
Ifremer, Nantes University and the township community "CAP Atlantique" have joined their skills to try to better understand how two key conchological areas in the shore economy of the Pays de la Loire area develop, especially since, environmentally, little is known about them, and because they face recurrent issues on the zootechnic level. This programme encompasses two main topics: assessment of environmental inputs (catchments areas input, contaminants evolution in the area, and impact on the conchological zones) and a study of the conchological culture (growth, mortality, analysis of the stocks). Concomitantly, operational tools (hydrodynamic and flux transfer models, databases, SIG) are developed to improve local management of the sites and information...

Haure, Joel; Fortin, Adeline; Dupuy, Beatrice; Nourry, Max; Palvadeau, Hubert; Papin, Mathias; Penisson, Christian; Martin, Jean-louis.
Introduction: Marine farming in France is currently very widely dominated by oyster farming. French oyster production totals 148,467 tons, for a turnover of close to 280 million euros, making France the leading European producer. The two main species concerned are the cup oyster, Crassostrea gigas (140,000 tons) and the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis (2,000 tons), the production of which has collapsed since 1970 following successive epizootics of Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae. French oyster farming is thus in a situation of quasi single-crop farming, with more than 90% of tonnage pertaining to the cup oyster (FAO data from 1993). This situation of quasi single-crop farming leads to the pessimistic observation that one hypothetical crisis in the...

Genetic basis of growth, survival and their plasticity in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Ernande, Bruno; Boudry, Pierre; Heurtebise, Serge; Haure, Joel; Martin, Jean-louis.
Introduction : Growth and survival are the life-history traits of the most interest for oyster production since they determine biomass output (growth x survival). This study aimed to investigate whether there is genetic basis for growth, survival and their plasticity to know if a selection program is conceivable for these traits. Material and Methods : Nested half-sibs mating design was used to produce families of oysters: 5 males were each mated to three females producing 5 half-sibs families, each containing 3 full-sib families. At 15 months of age (May 1999), each full-sibs family was randomly split into five groups which were given different treatments. Two groups were placed in a constant environment: one with low food resources and another with high...

ArchiMer
Gagnaire, Beatrice; Geret, Florence; Haure, Joel; Martin, Jean-louis; Burgeot, Thierry; Thomas-guyon, Hélène; Renault, Tristan.
Shellfish industry is often realised in estuarine areas, subjected to pollutions due to agricultural activities. The harmful effects of pesticides on animals inhabiting these estuarine zones are poorly documented. Bivalve molluscs represent an interesting model because they are sedentary and they filter water intensively. Effects of pesticides on haemocytes functions were tested in Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas and analysed by flow cytometry. A combination of pesticide at environmental concentrations was tested in vivo. Animals used corresponded to two genetically selected populations produced in hatchery.

Zinc-hemocyanin binding in the hemolymph of carcinus maenas (crustacea, decapoda) ArchiMer
Martin, Jean-louis; Van Wormhoudt, A.; Ceccaldi, H.j..
1. A quantitative and electrophoretic study of copper and zinc in hemolymph of the crustacea decapoda, Carcinus maenas, has been carried out. 2. Most of the copper was linked with hemocyanin.3. All copper-binding proteins are hemocyanin.4. Zinc belongs to three different compartments: more than 68% is linked with hemocyanin; about 10% is shown in the fraction containing blood cells, lipids and carotenoids; 15% is present in the hemolymph under a soluble and dialysable form. 5. Specific zinc-binding protein has not been found out in the serum of Carcinus maenas.6. Zinc linked with hemocyanin is found on high molecular weight protein fractions only. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Martin, Jean-louis; Haure, Joel; Dupuy, Beatrice; Nourry, Max; Palvadeau, Hubert; Papin, Mathias; Penisson, Christian; Thouard, Emmanuel.

Martin, Jean-louis.
Two kinetics of contamination of Carcinus maenas by 59Fe have been determined in relation with the preponderent physico-chemical state of the metal in the experimental medium. The soluble forms seem to be accumulated essentially in internal tissues by biological process when particulate forms are accumulated in tissues in contact with sea water. The whole contamination and the kinetics of contamination of the whole crab Carcinus maenas is dependant of the contamination and the kinetic of contamination of the external tissues, gills and exoskeleton, in contact with sea water. Nitrogenous and phosphorous waste production in a flow-through land-based farm of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Lemarie, Gilles; Martin, Jean-louis; Dutto, Gilbert; Garidou, C.
A study on nitrogenous and phosphorous waste production in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was carried out in a flow-through land-based farm. The main objectives were (i) to calculate nitrogenous (N) and phosphorous (P) waste production (particulate and dissolved) from in situ measurements for different rearing ponds with specific fish biomasses, fish sizes and flow rates, (ii) to establish nitrogenous and phosphorous waste production budgets, ratios and equations, and (iii) to compare, for the whole farm, in situ measurements to estimate N and P waste production from waste equations. Waste production was manifest by an increase in concentrations of total ammonia nitrogen, total Kjeldhal nitrogen, particulate nitrogen, dissolved phosphorus and...

Martin, Jean-louis; Haure, Joel; Dupuy, Beatrice; Nourry, Max; Palvadeau, Hubert; Papin, Mathias; Penisson, Christian; Thouard, Emmanuel.

Bodoy, Alain; Martin, Jean-louis; Bacher, Cedric; Haubois, Anne-gaelle; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
1.This report presents the results of a field study conducted in the ECASA test site nOS in the Pertuis Breton, France. The site is located on the Atlantic West coasts. It is open to the bay of Biscay, but is slightly protected against westerly winds. The bay has been exploited by intertidal mussels culture for centuries. 2. Within the bay, mussels (Mytilus edulis) are cultivated either by the traditional pole technique, around the bay or on longlines in the centre of the bay. The area occupied by these longline s represents 250 ha, and the resulting annual production is 1 000 tonnes of mussels. The average depth at mid tide is of 13.8 m. The sediment is sandy, with a small fraction of mud. 3. The site is subject to several regular monitoring through the...

Bensch, Alexis; Bacher, Cedric; Baud, Jean-pierre; Martin, Jean-louis.
The growth of Ruditapes philippinarum was modeled with an energetic budget equation. Clams were fed with Skeletonema costatum in experimental units during 6 months. The filtration and respiration terms of the budget were depending on the temperature and the dry weight. The spawning effort was represented by an allometric relation derived from the experimental data. The model simulated the individual growth of the dry weight and of the shell converted into energy during the 6 months of the experiment. The results fitted well with the observations until the loss of energy due to the spawning. After that period the model overestimated the growth which was explained by another spawning loss not taken into account in the model and not noticeable with the...

A comparative study of the growth of the oysters Crassostrea gigas, Crassostrea angulata and their hybrids was carried out in 1999 in system controlled with contribution of the micro alga Skeletonema costatum. The results showed significant differences of the pondéral growth of the four studied progenies. The animals C. gigas had growth rates 1.4 times greater than C. angulata oysters. The hybrid progenies were shown more powerful than Portuguese oysters but are not different from the Japanese oysters. The ecophysiologic study showed that the averages of filtration and oxygen uptake, obtained by means of a three hours recording, cannot differentiate the four studied progenies. On the other hand, the calculation of the FTA (Feeding Time Activity) allowed to...

A comparative study of the growth performances in cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas, Crassostrea angulata and their hybrids was conducted from March to October 1999 in a controlled farm with phytoplankton (Skeletonema costatum) input. The individuals, of the same age, were from genitors which had been identified through a marker analysis of the mitochondrial genome (Boudry et al, 1998). As a consequence, two pure offspring were obtained through the crossing of Portuguese oyster C. angulata (AA) genitors and the crossing of Japanese oyster C. gigas (GG) genitors.
