Does Social Capital Have a Role in Environmental Kuznets Curve? Spatial Panel Regression Approach AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Zapata, Hector O.; Schafer, Mark J.; Marzoughi, Hassan.
We advance a case for an inclusion of social capital in the environmental Kuznets curve analysis using highly disaggregated data on water pollution in Louisiana. A social capital index and other variables are used in parametric and spatial panel regression models to explain water pollution dynamics.

Impact of Corn Based Ethanol Production on the U.S. High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) and Sugar Markets AgEcon
Marzoughi, Hassan; Kennedy, P. Lynn; Hilbun, Brian M..
The objective of this paper is to determine the impact of ethanol production on the sweetener market in the U.S. It was found that ethanol production has increased corn demand and prices, and therefore, may have a negative impact on HFCS production and increase the demand for sugar.

The Impact of Central American Free Trade Area (CAFTA) on the United States sugar market AgEcon
Marzoughi, Hassan; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This paper tries to estimate the impact of establishment of CAFTA on the United States sugar market. We use the United States sugar demand elasticity and the amount of increase in the U.S. sugar import quota under CAFTA agreement to estimate the magnitude of this effect. This study shows that these increased imports will result in a decrease in the U.S. domestic sugar price of about 1.7 cents, or approximately 8.6 percent. Although it amounts to only pennies per pound, this decrease in the domestic price could result in the incursion of significant U.S. government expenditures given the current structure of the U.S. non-recourse loan program.

The Impact of Ethanol Production on the U.S. Gasoline Market AgEcon
Marzoughi, Hassan; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This paper uses a simultaneous equation system to determine the impact of ethanol fuel production on the U.S. motor gasoline market, especially gasoline prices. Based on estimation results, every billion gallon increase in ethanol production decreases gasoline prices by as much as 6 cents.
