Stock Assessment Form Demersal species. Red mullet - GSA7. Reference year: 1998-2016. Reporting year: 2017 ArchiMer
Jadaud, Angelique; Guijarro, Beatriz; Massuti, Enric.
In the Gulf of Lions (GSA 7), red mullet is exploited by both French and Spanish trawlers. Information on French gillnetters is only available for 2011 and 2013-2016, but although it is suspected that they have been fishing red mullet in the past, no data is available to quantify their catches. According to official statistics, during the first part of this period (2004-2012), the total annual landings have oscillated around an average value of 190 tons; since 2012, landings have shown a clear increasing trend. French trawlers dominate the fishery, as they represent 88% of the catches (average 201 tons) for the entire period. After 2009, because of the large decline of small pelagic fish species in the area, the trawlers fishing small pelagic have diverted...

Increasing human pressures and global environmental change may severely affect the diversity of species assemblages and associated ecosystem services. Despite the recent interest in phylogenetic and functional diversity, our knowledge on large spatio-temporal patterns of demersal fish diversity sampled by trawling remains still incomplete, notably in the Mediterranean Sea, one of the most threatened marine regions of the world. We investigated large spatio-temporal diversity patterns by analysing a dataset of 19,886 hauls from 10 to 800 m depth performed annually during the last two decades by standardized scientific bottom trawl field surveys across the Mediterranean Sea, within the MEDITS program. A multi-component (eight diversity indices) and...

After 2009, because of the large decline of small pelagic fish species in the area, the trawlers fishing small pelagic have diverted their effort on demersal species, this can explain the high levels of catches since...

Stock Assessment Form Demersal species. Hake - GSA7. Reference year: 1998-2016. Reporting year: 2017 ArchiMer
Jadaud, Angelique; Guijarro, Beatriz; Massuti, Enric.
Hake is one of the most important demersal target species for the commercial fisheries in the Gulf of Lions (GSA 7). In this area, hake is exploited by French trawlers, French gillnetters, Spanish trawlers and Spanish longliners. Since 1998, an average of 241 boats are involved in this fishery and, according to official statistics, the total annual catches for the period 1998-2016 have oscillated around an average value of 1914 tons (1057 tons in 2016). In 2009, because of the large decline of small pelagic fish species in the area, the trawlers fishing small pelagic have diverted their effort on demersal species. Between 1998 and 2016, the number of French trawlers operating in the GSA 07 has decreased by 50%. The French trawler fleet is the largest...

Context-dependent interplays between truncated demographies and climate variation shape the population growth rate of a harvested species ArchiMer

Fisheries ecologists traditionally aimed at disentangling climate and fishing effects from the population dynamics of exploited marine fish stocks. However, recent studies have shown that internal characteristics and external forcing (climate and exploitation) have interactive rather than additive effects. Thought most of these studies explored how demographic truncation induced by exploitation affected the response of recruitment to climate, identifying a general pattern revealed to be difficult as interactions are often case-specific. Here we compared five exploited stocks of European hake Merluccius merluccius from the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea to investigate how the interaction between internal characteristics and external forces affect the...

The MEDITS trawl survey specifications in an ecosystem approach to fishery management ArchiMer
Spedicato, Maria Teresa; Massuti, Enric; Merigot, Bastien; Tserpes, George; Jadaud, Angelique; Relini, Giulio.
The MEDITS programme started in 1994 in the Mediterranean with the cooperation among research institutes from four countries: France, Greece, Italy and Spain. Over the years, until the advent of the European framework for the collection and management of fisheries data (the Data Collection Framework. DCF), new partners from Slovenia, Croatia. Albania, Montenegro, Malta and Cyprus joined MEDITS. The FAO regional projects facilitated the cooperation with non-European countries. MEDITS applies a common sampling protocol and methodology for sample collection, data storage and data quality checks (RoME routines). For many years, MEDITS represented the most important data source supporting the evaluation of demersal resources by means of population and community...
