| Fishing regulations in waters under the responsibility of the EEC mainly concern three techniques of site development: - catch quotas by species and by area (TAC, a word adapted from the English Total Allowable Catch); - the definition of the technical characteristics of the fishing devices used (meshing, type of trawl,...); - setting a minimum commercial size for each species. | Le port de pêche de La Rochelle est entré depuis quelque temps déjà dans une période assez critique, mettant en péril l'avenir de sa flotte hauturière qui chaque année perd de nouvelles unités atteintes par la limite d'âge ou bien vendues à des armements d'autres ports. Cependant, il existe sur le plan local une réaction vive dont le but est non de maintenir une activité suffisante mais bien d'accroître le potentiel de la production par une modernisation de l'exploitation qui se concrétise par la construction d'unités de pêche par l'arrière et par une amélioration des méthodes de capture.
