Although the administration of sainfoin is associated with anthelmintic effects, information on the consequences of feeding this legume on product quality is scarce. In the present study we looked at milk quality and yield of goats fed either sainfoin or a non-tanniferous control forage. Twelve lactating goats of the alpine breed were used for the study. They received grass/clover hay for a period of 15 days (grass clover feeding period, GCFP). Then the feed was switched to sainfoin hay (approx. 90 % of daily intake) for another 15 days (sainfoin feeding period, SFP). Both feeds were supplemented with concentrates in order to guarantee isoproteic and isoenergetic feeding throughout the trial. Milk yield and quality (fat, protein, energy and urea) were... |

Organic poultry production has substantially increased in the last few years. On organic farms, welfare of poultry is enhanced due to enriched housing conditions as access to a free range area. This may reduce feather pecking and keep the health status at least on the same level as on conventional farms. However, welfare of organic poultry may be further improved if: (a) laying hens are already reared in enriched systems that are close to the systems in the layer house, (b) a frequent and even use of the run, (c) selection of suitable genotypes especially in relation to digestive ability, and (d) effective prevention and control of parasites. |

Introduction: Sainfoin is a high-quality condensed tannin containing forage plant. The knowledge about anthelmintic effects against sheep nematodes and about the influence of plant preservation (e.g. ensiling) on the anthelmintic activity is limited. Method: 36 parasite naïve lambs (6 groups of 6 animals each) were infected with H. contortus (7,000 L3) and C. curticei (15,000 L3). From day 28 until day 44 p.i., groups A1, B1 and C1 received fresh, dried or ensiled sainfoin. Groups A2, B2 and C2 served as respective tannin-free controls. Individual faecal egg counts on a dry matter basis (FECDM) were performed every 3-4 days. On day 44, all animals were slaughtered and adult worm populations were determined. Results: The consumption of sainfoin was... |

In Switzerland, France and The Netherlands 257 farmers keeping free ranging laying hens (organic and conventional) were interviewed with regard to genotype of the hens, management conditions and performance. In total, 21 different genotypes were present on the farms. The overall effect of system (organic vs. conventional) on egg production and mortality was significant, with higher mortality and lower egg production among organic hens. White hens tended to perform better and have a better feather cover than brown hens. Silver hens appeared to have a higher mortality and lower production per hen housed. In group discussions, farmers preferred a more robust, heavier hen with good intake capacity and good persistence. In organic systems, this hen type is more... |

Gastro-intestinal nematodes (GIN) are the most important problem in small ruminant production with regard to animal welfare and economics. The control of GIN currently relies almost exclusively on the use of synthetic anthelmintics. This is unsatisfactory for organic as well as for conventional small ruminant farmers because of rapid increase of resistant GIN populations and risk of residues in meat and milk. Alternatives to synthetic anthelmintics are therefore needed. This poster presents the main alternative control strategies for GIN. The strategies are divided into measures aimed at freeliving GIN stages (grazing management, biological control) and at stages within the host (genetic resistance, vaccination, anthelmintic plants, feeding... |

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are one of the most important problems affecting health and therefore performance and welfare in small ruminant husbandry. The control of these parasites in the past strongly relied on the repeated use of anthelmintic drugs. This has led to nematode populations which are resistant to most of the currently available anthelmintics. Furthermore customer’s demands for organic and residue free animal products are increasing. The aforementioned problems have given a strong impetus for the development of new non-chemical strategies to control GIN. Previous research has pointed out the anthelmintic potential of sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia, cv. Visnovsky) and other tanniferous (CT) feed sources in goats and lambs infected with... |

The aim of this study, carried out as part of work package 1 of the project “Improved Contribution of Local Feed to Support 100% Organic Feed Supply to Pigs and Poultry” (ICOPP), was to assess feed availability and demand throughout the countries of the ICOPP project and Europe. The ICOPP project is funded by national funding bodies that are part of the CORE Organic II project (Coordination of European Transnational Research in Organic Food and Farming Systems, www.coreorganic2.org). Partners from the following ten European countries were part of the project: Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. All partners provided information from their country on feed production, livestock... |

The aim of our experiments was to investigate the transmission and infectivity of the two main helminth parasites of poultry (Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum) under different run and litter management regimes. In experiment (a) two stocking rates were simulated in outdoor runs and the effect of a simple management practice (mowing) on helminth transmission was studied during two subsequent flocks. Stocking rate seemed not to change helminth transmission patterns and repeated mowing of runs did not reduce helminth infections. Lower stocking rates led to a substantial improvement of the run vegetation. In experiment (b) two litter management regimes (replace or add litter material) were compared to unmanaged litter with regard to... |
