Effects of compost and digestate on environment and plant production – results of two research projects Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G.; Berner, Alfred; Mayer, Jochen; Schleiss, Konrad; Kupper, Thomas.
A yearly amount of 9.3x106t compost and digestate derived from separately collected organic waste is produced in the 25 European Union member states. The improvement of soil properties is a major benefit of compost application. However, little is known about the occurrence of organic pollutants in compost. In order to estimate the potential of Swiss composts and digestates to influence soil fertility and plant health, one hundred products representative for the different composting systems and qualities available on the Swiss market were analyzed in two research projects. In the first study, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), ortho substituted and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs, DL PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and...

Organic maize Organic Eprints
Dierauer, Hansueli; Anken, Thomas; Hiltbrunner, Jürg; Kessler, Willy; Mayer, Jochen; Strasser, Fredi; Schmutz, Res.
Maize cultivation provides a valuable addition to the feed ration in farms with dairy cows. However, the cultivation of organic maize is challenging and posing risks regarding erosion, leaching of nutrients and soil compaction. Not all sites are suitable for maize cultivation. Therefore, it is important to first study the site before the cultivation. This leaflet provides some general information on how to cultivate organic maize optimally. Different topics about the needs of maize, the sowing, the right crop rotation and pest management are covered. Finally, there is also some information about economic aspects. This leaflet was made for farmers that want to begin cultivating organic maize, but it might also be of use to conventional maize farmers. The...

Phosphorus forms and enzymatic hydrolyzability of organic phosphorus in soils after 30 years of organic and conventional farming Organic Eprints
Keller, Martina; Oberson, Astrid; Annaheim, Kathrin E.; Tamburini, Federica; Mäder, Paul; Mayer, Jochen; Frossard, Emmanuel; Bünemann, Else K..
Lower P-input levels in organic than conventional farming can decrease soil total and available P, which can potentially be resupplied from soil organic P. We studied the effect of 30 y of conventional and organic farming on soil P forms, focussing especially on organic P. Soil samples (0–20 cm) were taken in a field experiment with a nonfertilized control, two organic systems receiving P inputs as animal manure, and two conventional systems receiving only mineral P or mineral P and manure. Soils were analyzed for total, inorganic, organic, and microbial P, by sequential P fractionation and by enzyme additions to alkaline soil extracts. Samples taken prior to starting the experiment were also analyzed. Average annual P balances ranged from –20 to +5 kg...

Ökologischer Sojaanbau in kälteren Gebieten Deutschlands? Organic Eprints
Paffrath, Andreas; Henneberger, Matthias; Mayer, Jochen.

Fuchs, Jacques G.; Berner, Alfred; Mayer, Jochen; Schleiss, Konrad.

The impact of cropping systems on soil phosphorus (P) forms and P dynamics was studied. The systems were a biodynamic (DYN), a bioorganic (BIO), a conventional (CON), a stockless system (MIN) and an unfertilized control (NON). These cropping systems are part of the DOK field trial in Therwil near Basel. The systems differed in fertilization and plant protection. The P budgets over 30 years were negative except for CON and increased in the order: NON < DYN < ORG < MIN < CON. A sequential P extraction scheme was used to characterize the P forms in soil samples from 2007 and 1977 (before the start of the trial). Labile inorganic P (Pi) forms differed significantly between cropping systems. Organic P forms (Po) and stable Pi forms were not...

Nitrogen Budgets and Soil Nitrogen Stocks of Organic and Conventional Cropping Systems: Trade-Off between Efficiency and Sustainability of Nitrogen Use Organic Eprints
Oberson, Astrid; Jarosch, Klaus A.; Bosshard, Christine; Dubois, David; Frossard, Emmanuel; Hammelehle, Andreas; Mäder, Paul; Mayer, Jochen.
Organic and conventional cropping systems differ in the nature and amounts of nitrogen (N) inputs, which may affect efficiency and sustainability of N use. In the DOK (bio-Dynamic, bio-Organic, Konventionell) field experiment, organic and conventional cropping systems have been compared since 1978 at two fertilization levels. Nitrogen inputs via manure and/or mineral fertilizers, and N exports from plots with harvested products have throughout been recorded. For all treatments, N outputs with harvests have exceeded the inputs with fertilizers. Over the past years, symbiotic N2 fixation by soybean and clover grown in the trial has additionally been assessed, indicating average annual inputs of about 100 kg ha-1 yr-1 of N fixed from the atmosphere. Soil...

Stickstoffnutzungseffizienz roher und anaerob vergorener Güllen: Eine Studie mit unterschiedlichen 15N Methoden Organic Eprints
Hutter, M.; Krebs, R.; Mayer, Jochen.
In agricultural biogas plants in Switzerland, in general 80 % or more of the digested organic matter is farmyard manure. Organic waste materials are used as cosubstrates. A field experiment with silage maize was conducted to test whether the apparent nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of anaerobically digested slurries is higher than the one of raw slurries in the year of application. Two different 15N labelling methods were used. In the 15N direct method, slurry NH4-N was labelled. In the indirect 15N isotope dilution method soil was pre-labelled by incorporating 15N labelled clover-grass powder; maize received unlabelled slurry. In the 15N direct approach, raw slurries had the lowest apparent NUE of NH4-N, two anaerobically digested (AD) slurries had an...

Einfluss von Kompost und Gärgut auf Pflanzenwachstum und –gesundheit: Potential und Grenzen Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G.; Mayer, Jochen; Berner, Alfred.
One hundred Swiss composts and digestates were investigated in order to evaluate their influence on plant growth and health. Important differences in biological compost quality and on the impact on soil fertility and on plant health were observed. The most important limiting factor of compost quality is the possible immobilization of mineralized nitrogen by some composts. However, quality composts have a good potential to protect plants against diseases. More attention should be paid to the control of the composting process in order to improve the biological quality of composts with more beneficial effects on crops.

Long-term organic matter application reduces cadmium but not zinc concentrations in wheat Organic Eprints
Grüter, Roman; Costerousse, Benjamin; Mayer, Jochen; Mäder, Paul; Thonar, Cécile; Frossard, Emmanuel; Schulin, Rainer; Tandy, Susan.
Wheat is a staple food crop and a major source of both the essential micronutrient zinc (Zn) and the toxic heavy metal cadmium (Cd) for humans. Since Zn and Cd are chemically similar, increasing Zn concentrations in wheat grains (biofortification), while preventing Cd accumulation, is an agronomic challenge. We used two Swiss agricultural long-term field trials, the “Dynamic-Organic-Conventional System Comparison Trial” (DOK) and the “Zurich Organic Fertilization Experiment” (ZOFE), to investigate the impact of long-term organic, mineral and combined fertilizer inputs on total and phytoavailable concentrations of soil Zn and Cd and their accumulation in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). “Diffusive gradients in thin films” (DGT) and...

Influence of compost and digestates on plant growth and health: potentials and limits Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G.; Berner, Alfred; Mayer, Jochen; Smidt, Ena; Schleiss, Konrad.
Composts can influence soil fertility and plant health. These influences can be positive or negative, depending of the quality of the composts. In order to estimate the potential of Swiss composts to influence soil fertility and plant health, one hundred composts representative of the different composting systems and qualities available on the market were analyzed. The organic substance and the nutrient content of the composts varied greatly between the composts; the materials of origin were the major factor influencing these values. The respiration rate and enzyme activities also varied greatly, particularly in the youngest composts. These differences decreased when the composts become more mature. Maturity, the degradation stage of the organic matter,...

No Till and Organic Farming Improve Soil Properties but Reduce Crop Yield Compared to Conventional Farming in a Swiss Farm Network Organic Eprints
Büchi, Lucie; Walder, Florian; Banerjee, Samiran; Colombi, Tino; Hirte, Juliane; Mayer, Jochen; Keller, Thomas; Six, Johan; van der Heijden, Marcel; Charles, Raphael.
Soils are of vital importance for sustainable food production. In order to maintain or improve soil quality, it is necessary to develop strategies for a sustainable use of soil. Alternative cropping practices such as reduced tillage and improved crop rotation are more and more adopted with the aim of decreasing the impact of agriculture on the environment. However, their on-the-ground impact in Swiss farming systems still has to be assessed. In this study, we quantified the impact of three farming systems (conventional farming, no-till, and organic farming) on plant and soil chemical, biological and physical properties. Our study included 20 fields for each farming system. All selected fields were cultivated with winter wheat the year of sampling. Soil was...

Potentials to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from Swiss agriculture Organic Eprints
Necpalowa, Magdalena; Lee, Juhwan; Skinner, Colin; Büchi, Lucie; Wittwer, Raphaël; Gattinger, Andreas; van der Heijden, Marcel; Mäder, Paul; Charles, Raphaël; Berner, Alfred; Mayer, Jochen; Six, Johan.
There is an urgent need to identify and evaluate management practices for their biophysical potential to maintain productivity under climate change while mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from individual cropping systems under specific pedo-climatic conditions. Here, we examined, through DayCent modeling, the long-term impact of soil management practices and their interactions on soil GHG emissions and GHG intensity from Swiss cropping systems. Based on experimental data from four long-term experimental sites in Switzerland (Therwil, Frick, Changins, and Reckenholz), we robustly parameterized and evaluated the model for simulating crop productivity, soil C dynamics and soil N2O emissions across a range of management practices and pedo-climatic...

How effective are ‘Effective microorganisms® (EM)’? Results from a field study in temperate climate Organic Eprints
Mayer, Jochen; Scheid, Susanne; Widmer, Franco; Fließbach, Andreas; Oberholzer, Hans-Rudolf.
Effective microorganisms® (EM) is a microbial inoculant promoted to stimulate plant growth and soil fertility in agriculture. In our study we investigated the effects of EM on crop yields and soil microbial parameters in a 4-year field experiment under organic management (2003–2006) in Zurich, Switzerland. Treatments of the EM preparations (i) the spraying agent EMA, (ii) EMA with the EM enriched organic substrate Bokashi and (iii) EMA with Bokashi and farmyard manure were applied in each year. As controls to treatments (i)–(iii) the same treatments were included with sterilised EM preparations and a control without EM application. Crop yields in each year and the soil microbiological parameters soil respiration, microbial biomass (SIR, CFE), dehydrogenase...
