The work presented here aims at comparing monitoring of S-metolachlor, the major pesticide in use in the Arcachon Bay (South West of France, transitional coastal area), by chemical analysis (monthly passive sampling) and contaminant dissipation modeling from sources (Mars-2D model). The global strategy consisted in i) identifying the major sources of S-metolachlor to the Bay, ii) monitoring these sources for 12 months, and iii) comparing modeled data in the Bay based on measured inputs, to chemical measurements made inside the Bay along with the 12-month source monitoring. Results first showed that the major S-metolachlor surface inputs to the Arcachon Bay are mainly from one single source. Modeled and measured data were in good agreement at 5 sites in the... |

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) is probably the most significant legislation in the water field that has been introduced for many years. Several publications pointed out that passive samplers (PSs) can be valuable tools as complementary method in monitoring water quality in the context of the WFD However, there is still a lack of quality assurance and control (QA/QC) procedures that demonstrate the reliability and the comparability of results obtained by passive sampling. Up to date, very few in situ intercomparison exercises on PSs have been performed until now. To our knowledge only three pan-European or international intercomparison studies have been organized in situ since 2007 (ICES Passive sampling survey and intercalibration, AQUAREF, IPSIC and... |

This paper, based on the outcome of discussions at a NORMAN Network-supported workshop in Lyon (France) in November 2014 aims to provide a common position of passive sampling community experts regarding concrete actions required to foster the use of passive sampling techniques in support of contaminant risk assessment and management and for routine monitoring of contaminants in aquatic systems. The brief roadmap presented here focusses on the identification of robust passive sampling methodology, technology that requires further development or that has yet to be developed, our current knowledge of the evaluation of uncertainties when calculating a freely dissolved concentration, the relationship between data from PS and that obtained through biomonitoring.... |
