INTRODUCTION In this, the second part of my revision of the Zosteropidae, 26 species are dealt with, all belonging to the genus Zosterops. The remaining 12 species of the genus and all the other genera, will be treated in the third part, the preparation of which is in progress. Unfortunately, it becomes more and more clear that no revision of the Pacific forms of the Zosteropidae can be really satisfactory without a visit to the American Museum of Natural History, where all the material of the Tring Museum and of the Whitney South Sea Expedition is assembled. Even though the co-operation of the authorities of that museum is above praise, I have usually been able to examine part of their series only, and no type specimens at all. More important is that the... |

INTRODUCTION In the periods January 1959-June 1961 and February-September 1962, a total of about three years, the late Mr. A. Hoogerwerf was attached to the experimental rice farm Koembe near Koerik, not far from the mouth of the Koembe River, southern New Guinea, where he was in charge of investigations concerning crop-damage caused by birds and mammals. The results of his work were published in an important report (Hoogerwerf, 1962), in which it was suggested that certain alterations in the pattern of agricultural activities, like changes in the times of flooding and planting of the fields, could reduce damage by water birds without need to resort to the drastic measures so frequently taken against wildlife when man feels only in the slightest... |

INTRODUCTION Difficulties with the identification of some West-Indian Belonidae and an investigation into the merits of the generic name Strongylura as against Tylosurus led to a revision of the Belonidae, the result of which is published here. As will be seen on the following pages, this revision is by no means final; many problems remain to be solved, much synonymy given here is doubtful, lack of material prevented me from investigating the possible presence of slight geographic variation in the widely distributed species; some apparently valid species are left out altogether (I listed their names on p. 5) because no material has been available, and other names remain doubtful as it has not been possible to examine the type specimens. There is also the... |

In the years 1992/1998, in Busselton, W Australia, nesting of two species of cormorant, Phalacrocorax melanoleucos and P. sulcirostris, always took place in close proximity to inhabited nests of Anhinga novaehollandiae. Evidently, nests of the latter strongly attracted cormorants about to start nesting. Although this attraction had been noted before (Vestjens, 1975), strangely, it was ignored in later standard works. |

INTRODUCTION Since the publication of my paper on the avifauna of Misool (Mees, 1965), no ornithological work has been done on the island, but a record of one additional species has come to my notice. This raises the number of species now known from the island to 166 (168 forms). The previous paper contained an enumeration of material in our collection; in subsequent years I have found a few more specimens and although these do not add anything of significance to the knowledge of the avifauna of Misool, they will be listed here for the sake of completeness. The Zoölogisch Museum, Amsterdam, possesses a few bird skins from Misool and these have also been included. Some of the skins of the Zoölogisch Museum bear no data other than the name of the island;... |

Routine examination of the bird collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie reveals, from time to time, the presence of unnamed subspecies. Four of these, from the Moluccas and from New Guinea, are described here. I am well aware that the detached description of some new subspecies is not a very valuable contribution to systematic ornithology, and usually try to incorporate descriptions in larger papers and revisions. The subspecies concerned belong, however, to species that are well-known or have been revised recently, so that little would be gained by postponing their descriptions. I am indebted to Dr. Dean Amadon for the loan of material of Ailurơedus buccoides stonii from the collections of the American Museum of Natural History.... |

This paper deals with a collection of birds from Trinidad and Tobago brought together by the junior author during a stay on these islands from the end of June 1953 till February 1954. The collection contains 835 specimens belonging to 178 species. About one hundred skins have been collected on Tobago. The collection mainly consists of the smaller species, which is due to the fact that at the time Mees was not in the possession of an adequate shooting gun for the larger species. Though much collecting work has already been done on Trinidad the collection contains one new subspecies, Pipra erythrocephala flavissima, jointly described, while it was shown that Tanagra violacea rodwayi is a tenable race. Moreover the Trinidad list is augmented by the following... |

In July 1974, a seabird was received for identification from Mrs. M. P. Panday of Paramaribo, Suriname. The bird proved to be an immature specimen of the Great Shearwater, Puffinus gravis (O'Reilly), a species not previously recorded from Suriname or the adjacent countries, which explains why Mrs. Panday had been unable to identify it with the literature available to her. Further information received from Mrs. Panday was that she had found the dead bird on the beach of the fauna reserve Bigi-Santi (east of Paramaribo) during a visit made from 13 to 15 June, 1974. There were many dead shearwaters on the beach at the time, but only a few (like the one collected) were fresh, most of the birds found were already entirely desiccated, and would have been dead... |

INTRODUCTION Over the past few years the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie has received, from different sources, several small collections of birds from various parts of New Guinea. This is a report on two of these. No ornithologist accompanied the expedition to the Sterren-gebergte (Star Mountains) of 1959, under the leadership of Dr. L. D. Brongersma and Captain (Air) G. F. Venema (Brongersma & Venema, 1960), but the mammal preparator Mr. J. J. Staats obtained a collection of some 120 bird skins. The majority of these are from the highlands in the Sterren-gebergte area, but a few specimens were collected in the lowlands near Hollandia and Tanahmerah. All localities with their approximate altitudes are listed and most of them are shown on the... |

INTRODUCTION In my recent revision of the Belonidae (Mees, 1962) a number of problems had to remain unsolved because of lack of material, and in particular because of a number of named forms the type specimens had not been available. The revision was called "preliminary" for that reason. Thanks to the co-operation of colleagues in several countries I have been able, on a round-the-world tour which lasted from February to August, 1962, to examine nearly all the types of what I had previously had to regard as species dubiae, and other type specimens, which show that in a few instances the synonymy presented in my paper is erroneous. A serious error in the key also became obvious (see under Belone punctulata). Though, inevitably, a few problems remain to be... |

Of the various races of white-eyes that inhabit the central group of the Solomon Islands, the race from the island of Rendova was the first to become known to science. Tristram (1882) recorded this race, which he indentified with Tephras olivaceus Ramsay, described the previous year from the "Solomon Islands", without an exact indication of its type-locality (Ramsay, 1881). Tristram (l.c.) stated that the species was a typical member of the genus Zosterops, and that, consequently, Tephras olivaceus Ramsay became preoccupied by Zosterops olivacea auct. (Certhia olivacea L.) from Réunion. Therefore he proposed the new name Zosterops rendovae, his comment being as follows : "This bird has already been described by Mr. Ramsay ... as Tephras olivaceus, sp. nov.... |

During a recent visit to the British Museum (Natural History), I found, stored away with some unsorted white-eyes, a skin, labelled as Zosterops sp., which evidently represents an undescribed race of Zosterops novaeguineae. It may be known as follows: Zosterops novaeguineae magnirostris, nov. subspec. Type: cf, January 1936, Awar, N. E. New Guinea, collected by Viscount Chaplin. Brit. Mus. reg. nr. 1936. 4. 20. 94. Measurements: Wings 54 and 54 1/2 mm respectively; culmen from skull 14 1/4 mm, exposed culmen 11 mm, culmen from anterior point of nostril 8 mm. The wings are freshly moulted and perfect, the tail is damaged. Diagnosis: Differs from all hitherto described races by its longer and heavier bill. Differs from the nominate race as well as from Z. n.... |
