- General high interest of farmers to participate in on-station and on-farm testing of cotton varietal lines and hybrids - On-station mother trials are managed by the researchers, while on-farm baby trials are managed by the farmer - A network of interested farmers need to be established, who are regularly trained in on-farm research and supported by extension agents - Farmers, researchers and extension agents together monitor the on-station and on-farm trials and evaluate cotton varieties and hybrids - However, the extension agents and farmers need to be introduced into plant breeding by the researcher to support and profit from decentralized participatory breeding efforts

This chapter is a first attempt to analyse bottlenecks and challenges of European organic bread wheat sector involving technical, political and market issues. From 2000, the organic grain market has largely increased in Western Europe. To balance higher consumer demand there is a need to increase organic production by a new transition and technical improvement. Bread wheat is grown in a variety of crop rotations and farming systems where four basic organic crop production systems have been defined. It is estimated that more than 95% of organic production is based on crop varieties that were bred for the conventional high-input sector. Recent studies have shown that such varieties lack important traits required under organic and low-input production conditions. This is primarily due to selection in conventional breeding programmes being carried out in the background of high inorganic fertilizer and crop protection inputs. Economic profitability of organic vs. conventional cotton-based production systems in a long-term field trial in India Organic Eprints

The debate on the relative benefits of conventional and organic farming systems is more topical than ever. The achievements of conventional high-input agriculture were largely brought about at the cost of deteriorating soil fertility; furthermore, they were based to a large extent on fossil fuels. Developing more sustainable farming practices on a large scale is of utmost importance. However, information about the performance of agricultural production systems under organic and conventional management in tropical and subtropical regions is largely lacking. This study aimed to assess agronomic and economic data from a long-term farming systems comparison trial under semi-arid conditions in central India.

Effects of reduced tillage in organic farming on yield, weeds and soil carbon: meta-analysis results from the TILMAN-ORG project Organic Eprints

As part of the TILMAN-ORG CORE ORGANIC II project, data on the use of reduced tillage in organic farming systems from a range of field trials and the published literature was compiled. A meta-analysis was conducted to determine the impacts of reduced tillage on crop yields, weed pressure and soil organic C stocks. This paper highlights some of the key findings from this study.

Organic farmers are interested in soil conservation by reduced tillage, techniques well known in conventional agriculture to protect soil quality and limit labor time and energy costs. However, organic farming and reduced tillage can modify weeds, soil structure, and thus soil nitrogen (N) mineralization which strongly influences wheat yield and quality. Conservation tillage (no-till and reduced tillage) brings many benefits with respect to soil fertility and energy use, but it also has drawbacks regarding the need for synthetic fertilizers and herbicides. To promote conversation tillage in organic farming systems, crop rotation, fertilization and weed control have to be optimized. In addition, crop varieties are needed with improved nutrient use efficiency (NUE) and high weed competitiveness or tolerance.
