Continental shelf dynamics have been observed since 1974 in the Gulf of Lions (NorthWestern Mediterranean Sea), with the principal aim of understanding the sumrner circulation in this region. From satellite infrared data, current meters, thermistor chains, and tidal gauge records, it appears that the major events occurring on the continental shelf take the form of wind-induced mesoscale phenomena. These phenomena, which are connected with strong and transient coastal upwellings, are generated by NorthWesterly winds, the mistral and the tramontane, which are highly transient in speed, with a stable direction and a short lifetime. These specifie features have enabled us to investigate the transient response of the sea on about ten such occasions per typical... |

In the central Ligurian Basin, Western Mediterranean Sea, dense water formation occurs in winter so that near-surface stratification displays a marked seasonality. Consequently, kinetic energy spectra from the surface to intermediate depths are entirely different in summer and winter. In summer, the spectra show a peak near the local inertial frequency (f). The polarization of currents in the internal gravity wave frequency (sigma) band (f < sigma < N, N the buoyancy frequency) resembles internal wave theory (for N >>f). In winter, however, no significant near-inertial (or any other) spectral peak is observed and motions are not polarized at any frequencies, whatever the observation depths. With respect to the energy levels observed in summer,... |

In the ocean outside areas of dense-water formation, coherent vertical motions (w) are generally much weaker (similar to 10(-3)) than horizontal (u, v) ones. According to theoretical models based upon "the traditional approximation", i.e. where the horizontal component of the Coriolis force is neglected, describing inertio-gravity waves in the ocean interior, this holds especially for motions at the inertial frequency f: w(f) < O(10(-2)(u(f), v(f))). We present observations of significant w(f), with mean values of 10(-1)(u(f), v(f)) and occasional values of 1(u(f), v(f)), from the deep Western Mediterranean Sea characterized by very small buoyancy frequency N = 0 +/- 0.4f. Our observations also present evidence of vertical propagation of internal waves,... |

In the western Mediterranean Sea, the Northern Current is one of the major veins and is formed by the junction, in the Ligurian Sea, of the currents flowing northward along each side of Corsica; it is recognized as an entity along the continental slope as far as the Catalan Sea; surrounding the central zone where dense water formation occurs in winter. The seasonal and mesoscale variabilities of the Northern Current are analysed from a fortnightly hydrological survey carried out off Nice to a distance of similar to 55 km, from October 1990 to July 1991, and from similar to 30 current time series collected as deep as 2000 m, on four moorings set within a similar to 30 km coastal band from December 1990 to May 1991, in the framework of the PRIMO-O... |

A hydrological transect was performed on seven occasions from February to June 1992 in the coastal zone off Marseilles, a region of the western Mediterranean Sea where such data were not yet available. This lack of information is surprising, especially if one considers the large amount of data already collected both further seawards and in neighbouring regions such as the Ligurian and the Catalan Seas. The time interval between the transects (one week to one month) does not permit a distinction between mesoscale and seasonal variations, but the fine space interval between the casts (3-4 km) and the length of the transect (similar to 45 km) provide significant information on the characteristics of the Northern Current (NC) when it penetrates into the Gulf... |
