THE APPLE JUICE CONCENTRATE ANTI-DUMPING CASE AGAINST CHINA: AN ESTIMATE OF CHANGE IN WASHINGTON'S REVENUES AgEcon
van Voorthuizen, Hilde; Cho, Sung-Yeol; Schotzko, R. Thomas; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
Increasing volumes of apple juice concentrate imports from China into the U.S. began in the mid 90s as a result of low Chinese prices. In 1999, the U.S. Apple Association launched a complaint with the US International Trade Commission (USITC) regarding the Chinese price strategy. During the course of investigation, the U.S. Apple Association requested that the Department of Agricultural Economics at Washington State University analyze the impact on the total value of juice apples utilized in Washington during the span of the USITC investigation. To determine the magnitude of the effect of the USITC investigation, not only on finished apple juice prices but also on the Washington raw product price, an inverse demand for finished product and an input...

MEASURING THE IMPACT OF ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION: SINGLE-OR MULTI-EQUATION SYSTEMS? A CASE STUDY OF THE WASHINGTON APPLE INDUSTRY AgEcon
van Voorthuizen, Hilde; Schotzko, R. Thomas; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
This paper reports the results of a case study analyzing the impacts of promotion and advertising conducted by the Washington Apple Commission (WAC) using both single- and multi-equation systems. The analyses are compared in terms of the comparability and coherency of results and in terms of the types of information that can be generated by the multi-equation model but not by the single-equation model. Due to the availability of detailed data from the WAC, the multi-equation system incorporates measures of actual lines of print media within an explicit model of print media as well as a measure of the multiplier effect associated with WAC promotion expenditures relative to the overall (retail-matched) level of print media. This information cannot be...

AN IMPERFECTLY COMPETITIVE MARKET MODEL OF THE U.S. LETTUCE INDUSTRY AgEcon
Hammig, Michael D.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
An econometric model was specified to represent the U.S. lettuce industry. Cursory examination of the industry structure suggests that imperfect competition may prevail in the lettuce market. Therefore, relations were specified that allowed for the possibility of imperfectly competitive behavior to affect market equilibrium outcomes. Specifically, a supply price equation was specified to account for the influence of market power of large growers, particularly during seasons of geographically concentrated production. Results do not contradict the hypothesis that imperfect competition exists in the lettuce market.

Bayesian Analysis of a Japanese Meat Demand System: A Robust Likelihood Approach AgEcon
Heckelei, Thomas; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Wahl, Thomas I..
This paper presents an application of Bayesian analysis to an AIDS model of Japanese meat demand extending previous approaches in three ways: (1) The methodology employed is robust with respect to the likelihood function but retains the generic, easily programmable character of algorithms offered by Monte Carlo Integration approaches based on the normal likelihood function. (2) In addition to inequality constraints, linear exact restrictions and stochastic prior information are subjected to a Bayesian posterior analysis of validity and incorporated into Bayesian point estimates of model parameters and elasticities. (3) In order to assess the influence of the prior density on posterior distributions of model parameters relative to the likelihood, a measure...

MARKET SEGMENTATION WITHIN CONTINGENT VALUATION AgEcon
Grimsrud, Kristine M.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
A finite probability mixture model is combined with a contingent valuation model to analyze the existence of differential market segments in a hypothetical market. The approach has at least two principle benefits. First, the model is capable of identifying market segments within the hypothetical market. Second, the model can be used to estimate WTP/WTA within each segment. The model is illustrated using a data set collected on consumer response to genetically modified foods in Norway.

SIMULTANEOUS EQUATIONS BAYESIAN BOOTSTRAP AgEcon
Heckelei, Thomas; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
This paper introduces a semi-parametric bootstrapping approach to Bayesian analysis of structural parameters in simultaneous equation systems that extends the single and multivariate regression approaches of Heckelei and Mittelhammer (1996, 2002) to models with endogenous regressors. Monte Carlo evidence demonstrated the considerable accuracy of the procedure in approximating posterior distributions, even for small sample sizes.

RURAL HOUSEHOLD FRUIT AND VEGETABLE CONSUMPTION IN CHINA AgEcon
Han, Tong; Wahl, Thomas I.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
A two-stage budgeting model using Chinese rural survey data is used to assess rural Chinese household food demand. The second-step includes 11 categories including 4 vegetable groups and 3 fruit groups. The results indicate that grains are still important staple foods and that vegetables are important non-staple foods relative to fruits.

INVESTING IN FARM WORKER HOUSING: A MULTI-SEASON PEAK-LOAD ANALYSIS OF WASHINGTON STATE DATA AgEcon
Qenani-Petrela, Eivis; Wandschneider, Philip R.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; McCluskey, Jill J..
This paper develops cost effective investment rules for farm worker housing and applies the model to farm worker housing in the state of Washington. The state must meet varying seasonal farm worker housing needs at minimum expense. In this study we examine investment rules to choose among different housing technologies in order to minimize the total costs of housing consistent with achieving welfare goals. The research extends existing peak-load models to the multi-season planning cycle case and applies the approach empirically to a new subject area.

Permanent Housing for Seasonal Workers? A Generalized Peak Load Investment Model for Farm Worker Housing AgEcon
Qenani-Petrela, Eivis; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Wandschneider, Philip R..
Many seasonal workers are housed in transitory accommodations, including tents and vehicles. In this study, we analyze the supply side of this problem by assuming that a public agent must house the workers through direct public investment. A peak load model is adapted to develop investment rules for the least-cost provision of seasonal worker housing, adding an interacting multi-season component to existing models. Based on this model and the data from three prototype projects, the majority of the least-cost investment would be in permanent, but seasonally occupied, housing.

REGIONAL AND NATIONAL IMPACTS OF EXPANDED PACIFIC NORTHWEST POTATO PRODUCTION AgEcon
Estes, Edmund A.; Blakeslee, Leroy L.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
A 46-equation econometric model of the U.S. potato market was developed. The model examines the determination of planted acreage, yield, production, and farm prices in the Pacific Northwest and in five other producing regions which compete with Northwest production. National demand relationships for potatoes used in processing, fresh consumption and livestock feed are also specified. These estimated relationships are used to simulate future scenarios which assume alternative rates of expansion for Northwest potato production. Results suggest that opportunities for considerable expansion of Northwest potato production exist if the secular shift in potato demand continues and increases in acreage are not excessive or expansion does not occur too quickly.

AN EMPIRICAL BARGAINING MODEL OF PRICE DISCOVERY: AN APPLICATION TO THE WASHINGTON/OREGON ASPARAGUS INDUSTRY AgEcon
Folwell, Raymond J.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Wang, Q..
The bargaining process and its role in price discovery within the Pacific Northwest asparagus industry is analyzed using a general empirical bargaining model. Growers' and processors' inverse supply and demand functions define boundaries for the negotiated prices. OLS and Heckman's two-stage estimation procedures are used to estimate a stochastic bargaining model of price determination. The results indicate that basic supply and demand forces exert substantial influences on the bargaining process. In particular, expected levels of supply play a paramount role in the level of prices offered, while past prices also influence current offers. The general framework of analysis used in relation to asparagus can be generalized to other commodities where...

ACCOUNTING FOR AGGREGATION BIAS IN ALMOST IDEAL DEMAND SYSTEMS AgEcon
Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Shi, Hongqi; Wahl, Thomas I..
This study revisits the consistent aggregation (over households) property of almost ideal demand system (AIDS) models and presents a method to explicitly account for expenditure aggregation bias when estimating the aggregate AIDS model with time-series data. Ignoring aggregation bias can lead to biased and inconsistent parameter estimates and can cause aggregate demand functions to be inconsistent with the demand functions at the individual household level. Recognizing the general limited information contained in aggregate time-series data for explicitly modeling aggregation bias, we present a new method of constructing an aggregation bias term that is derived from the proportions of household in different income groups. This information is generally...

A BAYESIAN ALTERNATIVE TO GENERALIZED CROSS ENTROPY SOLUTIONS FOR UNDERDETERMINED ECONOMETRIC MODELS AgEcon
Heckelei, Thomas; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Jansson, Torbjorn.
This paper presents a Bayesian alternative to Generalized Maximum Entropy (GME) and Generalized Cross Entropy (GCE) methods for deriving solutions to econometric models represented by underdetermined systems of equations. For certain types of econometric model specifications, the Bayesian approach provides fully equivalent results to GME-GCE techniques. However, in its general form, the proposed Bayesian methodology allows a more direct and straightforwardly interpretable formulation of available prior information and can reduce significantly the computational effort involved in finding solutions. The technique can be adapted to provide solutions in situations characterized by either informative or uninformative prior information.

A QUAIDS MODEL OF JAPANESE MEAT DEMAND AgEcon
Xi, Jing; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Heckelei, Thomas.
This paper makes a contribution to the application of nonlinear simultaneous equations estimation and nonparametric Bootstrapping techniques. The nonlinear demand model estimation work in this paper is in the context of the newly developed Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System (QUAIDS) model, and provides substantive results in terms of both model estimation technique and empirical economic findings. For the first time, bootstrapping is used in this highly nonlinear modeling environment to estimate variability in demand model parameter estimates and associated demand elasticities. The application relates to Japanese consumer behavior relative to Wagyu Beef, Imported Beef, Pork, Chicken, and Fish demand, and the empirical results are highly relevant to U.S....

ADAPTIVE TRUNCATED ESTIMATON APPLIED TO MAXIMUM ENTROPY AgEcon
Marsh, Thomas L.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
An adaptive estimator is proposed to optimally estimate unknown truncation points of the error support space for the general linear model. The adaptive estimator is specified analytically to minimize a risk function based on the squared error loss measure. It is then empirically applied to a generalized maximum entropy estimator of the linear model using bootstrapping, allowing the information set of the model itself to determine the truncation points. Monte Carlo simulations are used to demonstrate performance of the adaptive entropy estimator relative to maximum entropy estimation coupled with alternative truncation rules and to ordinary least squares estimation. A food demand application is included to demonstrate practical implementation of the...

AN OPTION VALUE APPROACH TO VALUING PRESERVATION PROPERTIES AgEcon
Winfree, Jason A.; McCluskey, Jill J.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
There has been a recent trend towards purchasing land for farmland preservation, wildlife refuges, other conservation, and cultural and historical preservation. There is a great deal of unexplained variation in the dollars paid per acre for these properties. The theoretical basis for this analysis is an option value model with stochastic returns to development. The data used in our analysis is sales transactions data for natural resource conservation and farmland preservation purposes from throughout the United States. We find that land, when it would be best used for development, but is not developed, has a significantly higher price.
