| This paper considers two main questions: Is it possible to use Farm Business Survey (FBS) data to derive well-established environmental indicators and can these FBS derived indicators also provide a reasonable comparison of the environmental performance of organic and conventional farms? The results suggest that the indicators can be obtained from FBS data and that the majority of the indicators provided meaningful results, despite some data limitations within the FBS dataset. The comparison of organic with conventional FBS data in the UK suggests that organic farms have lower fertiliser and crop protection costs (as would be expected) but that differences in feed costs, stocking density and cropping diversity were dependent upon farm type. | Many farm sustainability assessments use multi-criteria methods for aggregating indicators based on performance scores and importance weights. One of these is the SMART-Farm Tool, which measures the degree of goal achievement of farms across 327 indicators nested within 4 sustainability dimensions, 21 themes and 58 sub-themes of the FAO-SAFA Guidelines (Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture). | The supply situation for Welsh organic meat Organic production in Wales has been developing steadily in the last five years, with particular emphasis on organic cattle and sheep production. This was despite over-supply conditions in some sectors, notably dairy, following the very rapid growth in 1999/2000. Between the end of 2002 and end of 2005, the number of holdings increased by 12% to 688, and the certified land area increased by 29% to 71,000 hectares, of which more than 90% is grassland. | This overview report brings together the data for the six years from 2006/07-2011/12 to see how the performance of organic farms has really been affected by the economic downturn. It shows that for most farm types, the profitability of organic farms has held up much better than might have been expected from the retail market trend data. The overviews also show that for most farm types, the performance of organic farms remains comparable with that of similar conventional farms. However, certain farm types such as horticulture have fared much worse than others. | In response to increasing efforts for reducing concentrate inputs to organic dairy production in grassland-rich areas of Europe, a long-term study was conducted, which assessed the impacts of concentrate reductions on cows’ performance, health, fertility and average herd age. In total, 42 Swiss commercial organic dairy cattle farms were monitored over 6 years (‘Y0’, 2008/09 until ‘Y5’, 2013/14). In comparison with overall data of Swiss herdbooks (including conventional and organic farms), the herds involved in the project had lower milk yields, similar milk solids, shorter calving intervals and higher average lactation numbers. | To determine the current control measures for strointestinal nematodes (GIN) on Swiss organic small ruminant farms, a phone questionnaire was developed and conducted. The survey also aimed to assess the understanding and implementation of possible alternative GIN control options. In total, 52 meat sheep and 58 dairy goat farm questionnaires were completed, and it was found that in general, farmers were aware of the potential benefit of an adequate grazing management to reduce GIN infection. However, practical realisation was often limiting.
