Effects of tillage systems and mechanization on work time, fuel and energy consumption for cereal cropping in Austria CIGR Journal
Moitzi, Gerhard; Szalay, Tibor; Schüller, M.; Wagentristl, H.; Refenner, K.; Weingartmann, H.; Liebhard, P.; Boxberger, J.; Gronauer, A..
The machinery stock, fuel consumption and work time are crucial economic factors for the profit potential in the arable farming sector.  The influence of five soil tillage systems (two conventional tillage systems and three conservation tillage systems) and two tractor sizes (92 kW-tractor and 59 kW-tractor) on work time, fuel and energy consumption was measured in the semi-arid region in Austria.  The tractors were equipped with a high-performance flow meter and a radar sensor to measure the fuel consumption (L h-1) and working speed (km h-1).  The conventional tillage with mouldboard plough has the highest working time and fuel consumption rate.  The replacement of plough with a cultivator, reduces the work time and fuel consumption for soil tillage as...

Effect of two-axle and three-axle sugarbeet tanker harvester on selected soil-physical properties in dry and wet soil conditions CIGR Journal
Moitzi, Gerhard; Amon, Stefan; Klik, Andreas; Schwen, Andreas.
The effects of two-axle and three-axle sugarbeet harvester under dry (gravimetric soil water content 20%) and wet (gravimentric soil water content 30%) soil conditions on bulk density, soil penetration resistance and saturated hydraulic conductivity were determined in a long-term non-ploughed field with a silty loam soil in the Pannonian region of Austria. The tyre-inflation pressure of the sugarbeet harvester was set to 140 kPa in the front axle and 190 kPa in the middle and rear axles. The total weight of the three-axle harvester was distributed equally with about 20 Mg each axle. Two-axle harvester distributed the total weight of 49.1 Mg to the rear axle with 27.3 Mg and to the front axle with 21.8 Mg.The differences of bulk density (10-15 cm, 25-30 cm,...

Effects of working depth and wheel slip on fuel consumption of selected tillage implements CIGR Journal
Moitzi, Gerhard; Wagentristl, Helmut; Refenner, Karl; Weingartmann, Herbert; Piringer, Gerhard; Boxberger, Josef; Gronauer, Andreas.
Rising fossil fuel prices are leading to an increasing awareness of energy efficiency in plant production.  Tillage in particular can consume large amounts of fuel.  For four tillage implements (reversible mouldboard plough, short disc harrow, universal-cultivator, subsoiler), this study quantifies the effect of different working depths on fuel consumption, wheel slip, field capacity and specific energy consumption.  A four-wheel drive tractor (92 kW) was equipped with a data-acquisition system for engine speed, vehicle speed, wheel speed and fuel consumption.  Fuel consumption was measured in the fuel system with an integrated high-precision flow-meter.  The results show that the area-specific fuel consumption increased linearly with working depth for...
