The cohesive sediment transport in tidal rivers and estuaries is determined by the river discharge, the morphology, the salinity, temperature and particulate gradients, the deposition and erosion processes, the effective settling velocity of mud particles and by the physico-chemical and biological processes. The combination of these processes ensures that mud concentration varies on different time-scales ranging from seconds to seasons. Based on a long-term measurement campaign at Prosperpolder (Scheldt Estuary, Belgium), a detailed analysis of mud concentration, salinity, temperature and freshwater discharge with regard to the various involved time-scales is presented. The effect of bottom friction dissipation and of the different formulations used for this term on the wave evolution has been investigated in the Belgian coastal regions. Two eddy viscosity models for the bottom friction dissipation, the Madsen et al. (1988) model and Weber's (1991 a) model have been implemented in the Cycle 4 version of the third generation WAM model (Gunther et al., 1992). The wave conditions for the area of the southern North Sea were hindcasted for the February 1993 storm. The results are compared with buoy data. NOWESP has compiled a vast quantity of existing data from the North-West European Shelf. Such a focused task is without precedence. It is now highly recommended that one, or a few national and international data centres or agencies should be chosen and properly supported by the EU, where all available observational data, including the NOWESP data, are collected, stored, regularly updated by the providers of the data, and made available to the researchers. International agreement must be reached on the quality control procedures and quality standards for data to be stored in these data bases. Proper arrangements should be made to preserve the economic value of the data for their "owners" without compromising use of the data by researchers or duplicating... |

New features have been added and several necessary changes have been made to the standard WAM-cycle4 (WAMC4) model code for it to run efficiently when applied to shallow water regions. The restriction of having a source term integration time step smaller than or equal to the propagation time step was relaxed, considerably reducing the computational time needed. An additional reduction in computing time and an increase in accuracy were obtained by introducing a split-frequency time step. There is now a choice of using the octant or quadrant coordinate system for the propagation of the wave energy. The atmosphere sees the ocean, with sometimes huge waves, as a much smoother surface, compared to its passage over land where it is slowed down much more, even if obstacles are small compared to the size of ocean waves. A good observer notices right away that waves travel with the wind and consequently do not give much resistance. The details of how much resistance there actually is and its variation with wind speed and parameters defining the wave conditions has been a hot topic for the last 35 years. The correctness of the roughness formulation is a crucial question in the understanding of the air-sea interface.
