The fishery for benthic species (Monkfish, Megrim, Rays, etc ... ) represents for the surrounder countries of the Celtic Sea and the Bay of Biscaye one of the most important activities . An estimate of the discards of the main species resulting from the sorting practice onboard of the trawlers participating in this fishery was made in 1985 and 1991. it was concluded that an important quantity of juveniles of Rays, Megrim and Monkfish are discarded each year causing an important mortality. The aim of the present paper is to present the preliminary results of a selectivity grid fixed on a bottom trawl to limit as possible the discards. Three different grids were tested at sea during surveys with different results. The major problem is due to difference in... |

In the Bay of Biscay, the selective properties of otter trawls have mainly been studied with regard to single species. However, for bottom trawl multispecific fisheries targeting fish, it remains challenging to find a selective device capable of limiting catches of small individuals of several species without commercial losses. The present study focuses on an innovative technical solution to reduce catches of undersized individuals in a multispecies bottom trawl fishery in the Bay of Biscay. We tested a cylinder made of 100-mm diamond meshes turned at 90°, namely T90 inserted in the extension piece. We present the selectivity results obtained for six commercial species. This device allows the escape of small Solea solea, Trachurus trachurus and... |

The scientific cruise Observhal96 took place in August 4-27, 1996 with the underwater system for exploration and intervention « Cyana » and the support vessel « Suroît ». The goal of this IFREMER first use of a man opereted submersible for a fisheries study was to observe fishes and invertebrates in their environment, as well as fishing gears in operation. All the dives, 2 to 5 hours long, took place off Brittany in Atlantic. Five were shalower than 100 meters, nine between 100 and 200 meters, one at 400 meters and for deeper than 1000 meters. Six dives have been dedicated to in situ study of the impact of fishing gears : observation of the geometry of a monkfish tramel net and analysis of losses during hauling ; tracks of a bottom trawl and relative... |

We assessed the impact of an additional 100 mm square mesh cylinder (SMC) on the selective property of the demersal whitefish trawl in the Celtic Sea. Sea trials were conducted on board a French trawler using twin trawl rigging. We tested the effects of the position of the SMC (in front of and behind the mandatory 100 mm square mesh panel) and of the insertion of a dispersive float. Selectivity analysis revealed the 50% retention length () to be greater than the Minimum Conservation Reference Sizes regardless of species (haddock, whiting or megrim) or rigging configuration. Results did not reveal a clear effect of the SMC position. However, the insertion of the float led to a decrease in selection ranges suggesting enhanced contact probabilities with the... |

This study is part of the trawl selectivity program carried out on behalf of the local fisheries committee of Le Guilvinec. It aims to study the possibility of saving young scampis through the use of trawls equipped with "sorting grids". The covered area focuses on scampi and hake fisheries. The chosen period stretches from September to November 2000. Two vessels went out to sea as a first contribution to the study: the "hippocampe" and the "Gwen Vidic", both from Le Guilvinec. |

Scampi (Nephrops norvegicus) is traditionally fished with bottom trawls on muddy grounds. Some trawlers from Bayonne fish it from May to August in the south of the Bay of Biscay. The Capbreton area is partly forbidden to trawling and net fishing (see appendix 1) In spring and summer, it is frequented by a fleet of about fifteen vessels, among which are some lining vessels, fishing hake, and a few pot vessels, targeting crabs. Some of these vessels could be interested in using scampi traps in this area in order to be more versatile and, to a certain extent, to diminish their economical vulnerability through a diversification of the revenues generated by another high market value species. Ifremer offered to assess a new tool: scampi trap, on the Basque and... |

Knowledge about fish behavior is crucial to be able to influence the capture process and catch species composition. The rapid expansion of the use of underwater cameras has facilitated unprecedented opportunities for studying the behavior of species interacting with fishing gears in their natural environment. This technological advance would greatly benefit from the parallel development of dedicated methodologies accounting for right-censored observations and variable observation periods between individuals related to instrumental, environmental and behavioral events. In this paper we proposed a methodological framework, based on a parametric Weibull mixture model, to describe the process of escapement attempts through time, test effects of covariates and... |

The landing obligation implemented under the Common Fisheries Policy promoted the development of fishing gear selective devices. The REDRESSE project conducted in the Bay of Biscay was the opportunity for trawl fleets targeting cephalopods, Nephrops and demersal fish to continue to test various selective configurations to reduce their discards levels. The sea trials were carried out onboard of commercial fishing vessels and the experimental tows were sampled by an observer. Most of the selective devices were tested under the twin trawl method, with on one side the gear to be tested and on the other, the standard commercial gear. Other devices were tested with the parallel or alternate haul method. The data obtained were used to describe the catch species... |

The Lorient flume tank is an hydrodynamic facility available for any qualification and observation of submerged objects in still or moving water. It is a closed loop circulating tank filled with fresh water. The fluid is moved with a 70 kW pump-motor with a velocity between 0 and 1 m/s and homogenized with a series of pressure drop systems. The overall dimensions are 24.50 m long, 7.50m wide and 3.30 m high. The part where experiments can be set up is 12m long, 2.6 m wide and 1.5 m deep. A mobile bottom belt can be synchronized with the water flow velocity and enables to simulate the seabed velocity relatively to a towed object. The overall process of the facility is controlled by a user friendly interface. |

In the context of the new European Common Fisheries Policy and in particular the Landing Obligation, this report synthesizes the trials which were carried out between 2014 and 2016 on French bottom trawlers operating in the Celtic Sea and Western Channel, to decrease their discards. All the detail of the experiments and their results are attached in the voluminous appendices. After a state of the art and various workshops organized in partnership between fishermen, equipment manufacturers and scientists, 3 basic devices were selected for the trials, according to the main fisheries: - 100 mm square meshes cylinder - SMC - (in addition to the mandatory 100mm and 120 mm square mesh panels - SMP) with or without scaring floats ; - Extension + codend in... |

Most European fishing fleets will need to drastically reduce their unwanted catches to comply with new rules of the common fisheries policy. A more practical way to avoid increasing on-board sorting time and issues linked to storage capacity is to prevent unwanted catches in the first place. We assessed the selectivity properties of an experimental fishing gear that combined a 100 mm T90 cylinder with 130 meshes in the extension and a 100 mm T90 codend of 33 meshes (experimental gear) compared to a 100 mm diamond mesh extension and codend (control gear) during commercial trips using twin trawls. Analysis of the relative size composition of catches indicated a significantly higher escapement of small fish of several target species (e.g. Lepidorhombus... |
