Chlosyne lacinia saundersii is one of the most important pests of sunflower and it is the main target of insecticides applications. Larvae were collected in Londrina (PR), Santa Maria (RS), Dourados (MS), Ribeirão Preto (SP), Brasília (DF), Barreiras (BA), Uberaba (MG) and Vilhena (RO). Genomic DNA was extracted and amplified with ten-mer primers, which produced 101 loci. The size of the RAPD amplicons ranged from 180 to 2564 bp. Polymorphism among populations ranged from 31% to 67%, with the highest polymorphisms of 57% and 67% being detected in Uberaba and Vilhena populations, respectively. Populations with the highest similarity determined with Dice coefficient were from Ribeirão Preto and Barreiras, while insects from Londrina showed the highest... |

The laboratory production of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AgNPV) was evaluated for larvae inoculated at 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 cm and with two NPV dosages, 10(6) and 10(7) polyhedron inclusion bodies (PIB)/ml, sprayed on the insect diet surface. A fixed population of 25 larvae/300-ml cup was used. Highest virus yield was achieved for larvae inoculated with ca. 2.0 cm at the higher NPV dosage. Losses of NPV-inoculated larvae ranged from 42.4% to 64%, due to high incidence of canibalism, death by other causes, and pupation. In another experiment, larvae were inoculated with two NPV dosages (1.0 x 10(7) and 4.0 x 10(7) PIB/ml), using 25,20, and 15 larvae/cup at the beginning of 4th instar (B4L); end of 4th instar (E4L); beginning... |

Boric acid concentrations (0.02,0.03,0.045,0.067 and 0.101 g/100 ml of diet) were evaluated in combination with the Anticarsia gemmatalis Hüb. nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AgNPV) for enhanced virali activity against the insect. Seven days after inoculation, the median lethal concentration (LC50) was 1.52 x 10(5) for the AgNPV alone and 7.95 x 10² for the NPV mixed with 0.045g of boric acid/100 ml of diet. At subsequent evaluation dates (9,11 and 14 days after inoculation) LC50's for NPV+boric acid were ca. 4x lower than those observed for the NPV alone. The median lethal time (LT50) was 13.6 days when the NPV was used alone, while, when in mixture with increasing concentrations of boric acid, LT50 values ranged from 13.7 days (boric acid at 0.02g/100 ml of... |

The aim of this study was to analyze the morphologically the fatty body of fourth-instar Anticarsia gemmatalis larvae under light, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Two distinct portions of the fat body were detected: the parietal (PA) and perivisceral (PV). The PA, the parietal portion, presented a long-stripped shape located below the tegument and lateral to the digestive tube. The PV, rarely observed, was in dorsal region, adhered to digestive wall. Both the portions were constituted of only one cellular type, the trophocytes. These cells in the PA were organized in one layer of thickness showing cylindrical contiguously morphology, whereas the PV was comprised by a mass of small cells, superposed as clusters. Both the portions were covered... |

The initial effects of the infection by AgMNPV in the total and differential counts of the hemocytes in Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae were studied. The total number of the hemocytes did not decrease in infected larvae, as it occurred in non infected larvae. In infected larvae, the hemocyte types showed the following frequencies: plasmatocytes - 47.8%, esferulocytes - 25.9%, granulocytes - 15.8%, oenocytoids - 7.2%, prohemocytes - 2.8%, vermicytes - 0,5%. Only the percentage of the granulocytes was different among infected and non infected larvae, indicating that these cells responded quickly to the initial viral infection. These results showed the effective role of the hemocytes in the response of the A. gemmatalis to the infection... |

The fungus Nomuraea rileyi (Farlow) Samson is one of the most important natural enemies of soybean caterpillars, mainly under humid weather conditions. Outbreaks of the fungus Microsphaera diffusa Cooke & Peck have demanded fungicide applications on soybeans, which could result in outbreaks of noctuid populations by reduction of the natural inocula of N. rileyi. The recommended fungicides have shown to be detrimental to beneficial fungi, reducing infection, delaying epizootics, and resulting in increased host population densities. In laboratory assays, benomyl, difenoconazole, sulphur and carbendazim affected conidial germination of N. rileyi, being the latter less deleterious. To assess the impact of fungicides used to control M. diffusa, on N.... |

The velvetbean caterpillar (Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner) has great economical interest as it affects the soybean crop worldwide. This work describes the morphology of the hindgut in A. gemmatalis larvae emphasizing their histological aspects. Distinct morphological regions, identified as pylorus, ileum, colon and rectum, constitute the hindgut of A. gemmatalis. A thin cuticular intima, a simple epithelium and muscular layer compose the hindgut wall, independent of the region. Microspines project from the cuticular intima in the posterior interstitial ring, between the midgut and the hindgut, and the posterior pyloric region. A single circular layer of large fibers, differing from the other hindgut regions that present two layers of muscular fibers, forms... |
