Neohydatothrips samayunkur (Kudô) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) infesting marigold (Tagetes patula, Compositae) in Brazil Anais da SEB
Monteiro,Renata C.; Zawadneak,Maria A. C.; Mound,Laurence A..

Monteiro,Renata C.; Zucchi,Roberto A.; Mound,Laurence A..
The occurence of Thrips tabaci Lind. on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) was investigated. In the Brazilian literature T. tabaci has been mentioned as a common early season phytophagous pest of cotton. However, there are no references to collections (voucher specimens) or to identification methods that can clarify these records. In contrast, among many samples of thrips collected between 1992 and 1996 (mostly in 1995) on cotton, in 30 counties from five states and four geographic regions, not a single specimen was found. If T. tabaci occurs commonly on this crop in Brazil, even at relatively low populations, then at least some individuals should have been collected in this survey. Most of the thrips specimens taken from cotton were Frankliniella schultzei...

Identification and rearing of four thrips species vectors of Tospovirus in the Federal District, Brazil Anais da SEB
Nagata,Tatsuya; Mound,Laurence A.; França,Felix H.; Ávila,Antonio C. de.
The disease caused by the viruses belonging to the genus Tospovirus is a serious problem in horticultural and ornamental crops in Brazil. In the field, this virus group is transmitted by the insect vector, thrips. Little is known about the thrips species occurring in Brazil, and which species are important for the dissemination of these diseases. For the study of epidemiology of this virus group, different thrips populations, which may have the capacity to be vectors of tospoviruses, were collected in the Federal District. Four species were identified: Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande, F. schultzei Trybom, Thrips palmi Karny and T. tabaci Lindeman. This is the first report of the occurrence of F. occidentalis and T. palmi in the Federal District. A...

Insect taxonomy in species-rich countries: the way forward? Anais da SEB
Mound,Laurence A..
There are two extremes in taxonomic behavior - publishing quickly as new taxa become available, and waiting a lifetime in the hope of publishing results that cannot be faulted. Neither of these extremes meets the needs of contemporary biologists in furthering our understanding of the evolution and maintenance of biological diversity. Part of the reason for these extremes is our failure to define suitable objectives for taxonomy. Instead of emphasising the units of biological diversity, we should concentrate on investigating patterns, structural, biological, ecological, temporal, and geographical, because it is these patterns that will generate novel ideas about the evolutionary history of organisms, and that will be most likely to be of interest to the...

South American Haplothrips Species (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae), with a new species of biological control interest to Australia against weedy Heliotropium amplexicaule (Boraginaceae) Neotropical Entomology
Mound,Laurence A.; Zapater,Miguel C..
A new species, Haplothrips heliotropica, is described from Argentina causing severe damage to the leaves of Heliotropium amplexicaule (Boraginaceae), a South American plant that is now a serious weed of pastures in Australia. Observations are presented on the host specificity, seasonal population changes and overwintering of this thrips. The genus Haplothrips includes more than 230 species worldwide, mostly feeding in flowers. In contrast, adults and larvae of H. heliotropica feed exclusively on green tissues. This is only the third South American species of Haplothrips. Character states are given for distinguishing these three species, and also for Haplothrips heliotropii Priesner from Egypt and Yemen.

Espécies de Thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) no Brasil Neotropical Entomology
Monteiro,Renata C.; Mound,Laurence A.; Zucchi,Roberto A..

Liothrips tractabilis sp.n. (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripinae) from Argentina, a potential biocontrol agent of Weedy Campuloclinium macrocephalum (Asteraceae) in South Africa Neotropical Entomology
Mound,Laurence A.; Pereyra,Veronica.
A new species, Liothrips tractabilis, is described from northern Argentina. Feeding by this thrips causes severe damage to the leaves of Campuloclinium macrocephalum, a plant that has been introduced to South Africa where it is a serious weed of grasslands. A key is provided to the four species of the genus Liothrips recorded from Argentina.

Thrips species (Thysanoptera) collected at Parque Estadual de Itapuã, Viamão, RS, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Pinent,Silvia M.J.; Romanowski,Helena P.; Redaelli,Luiza R.; Mound,Laurence A..
The order Thysanoptera comprises mostly phytophagous or fungivorous species, with a few species that are predators. Recent studies have emphasized the diversity of behavioural patterns amongst these diminutive insects. From the 5,500 species known worldwide, about 10% are recorded from Brazil, mostly tropical areas. In this work we surveyed the Thysanoptera fauna of a southern locality, 800 km south of the Tropic of Capricorn. The study site was ''Parque Estadual de Itapuã'' (30°22'S 51°02'W), Viamão, RS, and thrips were sampled from wild flowers, branches, grass and litter, from June 1999 to May 2001. A total of 83 species in 32 genera was found, but only 29 of these species could be identified, emphasizing the poor knowledge of the insect fauna of...
