Biological activity of phototoxic compounds in Bidens squarrosaH.B.K. (Asteraceae) Phyton
Pérez-Amador,MC; Muñoz Ocotero,V; García Jiménez,F.
Phototoxic compounds (polyacetylenes and thiophenes) and their biological activity were determined on Bidens squarrosa plants by measuring their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory potential. Phototoxic compounds were extracted with hexane, characterized by TLC, and their presence confirmed by U.V. spectrum of their extracts and bactericidal potential. Antibacterial activity of the hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts was measured against Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli, and their anti-inflammatory potential was determined by the mouse ear edema test.

Actividad anti-inflamatoria de Ziziphus amole Phyton
Romero-Castillo,PA; Pérez Amador Barron,MC; Guevara Fefer,P; Muñoz Ocotero,V; Reyes Dorantes,A; Aguirre Garcia,F; Amaya Chavez,A.

Phototoxic compounds and biological activity of extracts from Eupatorium morifolium Mill. (Asteraceae) Phyton
Pérez-Amador,MC; Muñoz Ocotero,V; García Jiménez,F.
Leaves of Eupatorium morifolium Mill. were analyzed for phototoxic compounds, and the toxicity of their hexane extract was evaluated against Bacillus subtilis. The phototoxic compounds were analyzed by TLC. In the plate, pale blue spots indicated the presence of these compounds. This was confirmed by the UV extract spectrum and the antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis. The biological activity of the leaf extracts (hexane, ethyl acetate or methanol) was also studied. The antiinflammatory activity was determined using the edema test on mouse ears, and the bactericide activity was assayed against Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli. A strong anti-inflammatory activity was shown by the leaf extracts. The ethyl acetate extract exhibited the...

Alkaloids in Solanum torvum Sw (Solanaceae): (With 2 Tables & 1 Figure) Phyton
Pérez-Amador,MC; Muñoz Ocotero,V; García Castañeda,JM; González Esquinca,AR.
A comparison was made between plants of Solanum torvum Sw that grow in Chiapas, Mexico, and plants of the same species originating from India. This was effected to establish either similarities or differences between these plants in total alkaloid contents and presence of solasodine, an important alkaloid for the partial synthesis of steroids. The total alkaloid content (0.12%) of the plants coming from Chiapas and India was the same. However, solasodine was found only in the plants of Chiapas. In addition, the total amount of glycoalkaloids (0.038%) and two glycosilated compounds derived from solasodine, solasonine (0.0043%) and solamargine (0.0028%), were determined.

Vernonia patensKunth, an Asteraceae species with phototoxic and pharmacological activity Phyton
Pérez-Amador,MC; Muñoz Ocotero,V; Pérez Benitez,S; García Jiménez,F.
The presence of phototoxic compounds in stems and leaves of young plants of Vernonia patens Kunth was confirmed by TLC. These compounds were in smaller amounts in younger than in adult plants of this species. Only the stems presented specific activity of these compounds from the two study plant organs. It included characteristic UV bands at 200 and 300nm, and phototoxic activity against Bacillus subtilis (ATCC-6633). Stems and leaves of Vernonia patens also showed anti-inflammatory activity and bactericide potential.

Phytochemical and pharmacological studies on Mikania micrantha H.B.K. (Asteraceae) Phyton
Pérez-Amador,MC; Muñoz Ocotero,V; Ibarra Balcazar,R; García Jiménez,F.
Asteraceae is one of the largest families of Angiospermae, and contains the Mikania genus. Several species of this family contain polyacetylenic and thiophenic compounds which are used as taxonomic markers. Also, their phototoxic activity acts as plant defense mechanism. In this paper we report the absence of these compounds in Mikania micrantha. We also describe the composition of the volatile oil from the seeds and inflorescence in the species. Linalool and α-pinene were the main components of this M. micrantha's essential oil. This study tested the ability of extracts of Mikania micrantha to inhibit the mouse ear inflammation in response to topical application of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA). The antibacterial activity of...
