Impact of information and communication technology (ICT) on international trade in fruit and vegetables: A gravity model approach AgEcon
Thiemann, Franziska; Fleming, Euan M.; Mueller, Rolf A.E..
Globalization results when markets become more integrated because of reduced transaction and transport costs. These costs have fallen because of sustained advances in transport technology and, more dramatically, in digital information and communication technology (ICT). Although communication costs tend to be a minor component of total trading costs, reductions in these costs may strongly stimulate international trade. The empirical evidence in support of this effect is, however, scant and its strength may depend on the composition of ICT and the nature of the product being traded. We test the hypothesis of an ICT effect on trade in bananas, oranges, tomatoes, and vegetables and fruit in general. We employ a gravity model of international trade between...

Whither Aquaculture R&D? Results from a Delphi Study AgEcon
Stricker, Susanne; Guettler, Stefan; Mueller, Rolf A.E.; Schulz, Carsten.
In the summer of the year 2008 a worldwide online Delphi study on the future of R&D in aquaculture was conducted. The Delphi method is widely used to survey experts on the anticipated developments within a specific domain. We employ this method to ascertain the likely future directions of aquaculture research in developed, high-income countries. For the convenience of our respondents we conducted the survey on the web. Results of the survey show that aquaculture experts agree that aquaculture research in general has made substantial achievements and will continue to make even more achievements in the future and also aquaculture research achievements will have very large impact on the productivity of the aquaculture farm as well as on the quality of...

Hired hooves: Transactions in a south Indian village factor market AgEcon
Mueller, Rolf A.E.; Prescott, Edward S.; Sumner, Daniel A..
Bullocks are an important resource in Indian agriculture where they are used as draft animals. Previous research suggests that farmers who do not own bullocks, or own bullocks in insufficient numbers relative to their land holdings, adjust bullock‐land ratios through transactions in the land market, rather than by hiring bullock services. The reasons given for this behaviour are that there are ‘inhibited’ or ‘missing’ village markets for bullock services. Results from a survey of the activities and transactions of six bullock contractors during an entire cropping period show that village markets for bullock services exist continuously and are far from being inhibited. Close monitoring of the bullock contractors’ transactions supplied rich evidence of the...

Marketing Wine on the Web AgEcon
Stricker, Susanne; Mueller, Rolf A.E.; Sumner, Daniel A..
E-commerce is penetrating agriculture, particularly for selling products directly to consumers. The wine industry is a case in point. The industry has long-term experience in direct marketing. Many wineries welcome patrons at their premises for wine tasting and for selling wine to them. Moreover, where the practice is allowed, shipping wine directly to consumers without the assistance of trade intermediaries is a significant sales channel. E-commerce was adopted early in the wine industries of wired high-income countries and the wine industry provides an opportunity for studying the adoption, use, and impact of e-commerce. Moreover, because e-commerce has not spread evenly through all branches of agriculture, lessons learned from the wine industry may...

Supply Chains and Social Network Analysis AgEcon
Mueller, Rolf A.E.; Buergelt, Doreen; Seidel-Lass, Linda.
Judged by its currency, the supply chain is one of the more successful metaphors in economics. The metaphor borrows from mechanics the idea of the chain, that is something that consists of elements that are linked to each of their two immediate neighbors and which jointly provide a strong but flexible connection. The metaphor transplants the chain-idea into the sphere of economics where, before the introduction of supply chains, chains were, for most economists, things best left in the care of ironmongers. More than twenty years after its introduction the "supply chain"-metaphor appears to be losing its luster and a competition is underway in the literature where authors forge complicated arguments in support of metaphors which recognize that supply chains...
