Strategies for medium-sized value-based food chains during growing process with a particular focus on the business logic and management concept Organic Eprints

The paper will describe the business logic and management concept looking closer to the processes behind economic performance and efficiency. The analysis will be based on a literature review and on two case-study businesses of a medium-sized VBFC. The first case study business will be characterized by the quality aspects of its products and/or process and the story behind its production system. The second one will focus on the cooperation and communication between chain partners such as farmers, processors, and wholesalers. The instrument of contracts and the different types of contracts will be of particular interest.

Evaluating the contribution of innovation networks to resilient farming systems Organic Eprints

Eberswalde University has been establishing an innovation network for organic farming and processing in the Federal State of Brandenburg and the city of Berlin in the north-eastern part of Germany. During the last decade, the network enabled several cross-disciplinary study and research projects. Organic farmers, small and medium-sized organic food processors and trade businesses, research institutes, advisory services as well as governmental and non-governmental organisations contributed to the development of this network. The projects that are jointly implemented focus on strategy development and practical problem solving for organic food value chains.

The Bohlsener Mühle GmbH & Co. KG (Mill of Bohlsen Ltd & limited partners) is a processing enterprise handling only organic cereals and other mill and bakery products. The enterprise is specialised on the processing of cereals and legume crops which are grown in northern Germany such as mainly spelt, wheat, oats and rye; as well as legume and oil seeds crops from several countries. The location and regional context are highly relevant for understanding the sustainability objectives and the related values as well as the interrelations between chain partners within one of the most important organic cereal value chain in Northern Germany. The producer-consumer-cooperative EVG Landwege e.G. (EVG: Erzeuger-Verbraucher-Gemeinschaft) is located in the city of Lübeck. It has five organic retail outlets in the south-east of the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein, the northern Federal State of Germany. The Hanseatic City of Lübeck is the second-largest city in Schleswig-Holstein and one of the major ports of Germany. Situated on the river Trave, it was the "capital" of the Hanseatic League (‘Queen of the Hanse’) for several centuries and, because of its Brick Gothic architectural heritage, is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
