CONSUMER BIOTECHNOLOGY FOOD AND NUTRITION INFORMATION SOURCES: THE TRUST FACTOR AgEcon
Ekanem, Enefiok P.; Muhammad, Safdar; Tegegne, Fisseha; Singh, Surendra P..
Although much has been written on consumer attitudes toward genetically modified foods, not much is known about how or where consumers get the information for the decisions they make about genetically modified foods. This paper reports on the media used by consumers in acquiring information about biotech food and nutrition issues, and examines how much trust consumers put in selected information sources. The paper also discusses how socio-economic variables affect level of trust in selected sources. Qualitative and quantitative techniques were applied to data collected from focus groups and a mail questionnaire survey. Analyses showed that consumers used newspapers (73.7%), television (73.2%), and magazines (71.2%) occasionally or more frequently than...

Producer Biotech Food Knowledge Differences: Findings from a Three-State Survey AgEcon
Ekanem, Enefiok P.; Muhammad, Safdar; Mafuyai-Ekanem, Mary; Tegegne, Fisseha; Singh, Surendra P..
Over the years, public opinion in the United States on agricultural biotechnology has shifted from one of extreme consumer concern to one of indifference. This paper analyzes gender, ethnic, education, age, and household-income differences in producers’' biotechnology knowledge. Mail questionnaires were used in collecting data. Responses to selected questions were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Chi-squares tests showed statistically significant differences in biotechnology knowledge among farmers who participated in the three-state survey.

The Structure Performance Hypothesis and The Efficient Structure Performance Hypothesis-Revisited: The Case of Agribusiness Commodity and Food Products Truck Carriers in the South AgEcon
Allen, Albert J.; Shaik, Saleem; Myles, Albert E.; Muhammad, Safdar.
Two competing hypotheses on market structure and performance of firms are the traditional structure-conduct-performance (SCP) paradigm and the efficiency structure hypothesis. This paper reveals the profits made by firms in the trucking industry were because of greater efficiencies than their competitors and not because of collusive activities.

Participation of the Latino/Hispanic Population in the Food Stamp Program (FSP) AgEcon
Muhammad, Safdar; Tegegne, Fisseha; Ekanem, Enefiok P.; Appleton, Nathaniel; Pearson, Lou.
The Hispanic population is growing rapidly in the U.S. generally and in the southern states particularly. This rapidly growing population is characterized by high poverty rates among children and the elderly compared to other races. The Hispanic population is also less educated, characterized by low income, lacks English language proficiency, and has a need for public assistance. Hispanic total and household participation in the FSP increased rapidly, especially in metro counties. The increase in participation is about three times that of the total population. Participation of Hispanic children in the program was also much higher than for adults. The growing Hispanic population with special needs and requirements and rising participation in the FSP will...

EXPORTS FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AND FOOD SAFETY CONCERNS AgEcon
Muhammad, Safdar; Singh, Surendra P.; Ekanem, Enefiok P.; Tegegne, Fisseha; Akuley-Amenyenu, Anonya.
Food safety issues are becoming more important in international trade. Fresh food products are more likely to carry food risks and to encounter Sanitary and Physiosanitary Measures (SPS) as barriers to market access. Developing countries (DC) need to overcome barriers and develop capability to guarantee the safety of food product exports in order to maximize benefits from international trade. The paper examines the importance of agro-food processing sector for developing countries and explores the private and public actions required to address food safety risks in fresh food product exports from developing countries. Thus DC exporters must learn to supply safe products and to defend their interest in transparent, science-based standards. Successful...

FACTORS AFFECTING PARTICIPATION IN THE FOOD STAMP PROGRAM IN TENNESSEE AgEcon
Tegegne, Fisseha; Muhammad, Safdar; Ekanem, Enefiok P..
The goal of the Food Stamp Program (FSP) is to serve as a safety net for low-income families by providing assistance that will enable them purchase nutritious food. Eligibility to participate in the program is based on U.S. poverty guidelines and asset ownership of recipients. Recent welfare reform resulted in a decrease of participants in all federal welfare programs including food stamps. This paper reports results of an evaluation of county-level economic conditions and existing policy parameters that affect participation in the FSP in Tennessee and to derive implications for future policies. The results showed that there has been a significant decline in participation in the state, with a greater decline in metro counties over the same period. The...
