| In the fall of 1969, I worked at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden and studied the murid rodents in the large collection of the late H. J. V. Sody. There I examined holotypes of the taxa he named and described in his report on "Six New Indo-Malayan Rats" that was published in 1932. The identities and allocations of four of these taxa—R. maxi, R. taerae, R. rattus santalum, and R. r. samati—will be discussed in future reports dealing with the murid fauna of the Indo-Malayan and Indo-Australian regions that are now in preparation. The other two taxa, R. tondanus and R. thysanurus, are discussed in this paper. | A new species of the murid Hydromys is named and described, based on skins, skulls and denti tions. The sample comes from the Wissel Lakes region in the Indonesian half of New Guinea (Irian Jaya). In many features, the new species is a miniature version of Hydromys chrysogaster and may be more closely related to that large water rat than to H. habbema. Nothing is known about habits or habitat of the new rat, and it has not yet been collected elsewhere in Irian Jaya or in the eastern half of New Guinea (Papua). |

| In 1941, Henri Jacob Victor Sody's paper "On a collection of rats from the Indo-Malayan and Indo-Australian regions" was published in volume 18 of the journal Treubia. This important paper contains the descripitions of 43 new genera, species, and subspecies proposed by Sody, and the identifications and some descriptions of the rats and mice that were housed in the former Zoological Museum of Buitenzorg, now the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense in Bogor, Indonesia. The published report was the last major work written by Sody on Asian rats and mice and he included in it data he had compiled during his early studies of murid rodents in the late 1920's and the decade that followed. | Over 60 named forms of Rattus are recorded from Celebes (Laurie & Hill, 1954). Some of these names were first proposed in the i8oo's. The taxa they represent were sometimes based on only one specimen and were often poorly diagnosed. Consequently, the taxonomie status of the names has been unclear. Such names are stumbling blocks to accurate identification and sound classification of the species of Rattus which occur on Celebes. Mus faberi, named and described by F. A. Jentink in 1883, is a classic example. The name represents a taxon based on a single specimen. The original description of that specimen was short and vague.
