Mussels cultured on lines for nine months and harvested in March were boiled to remove shells and processed into a dry meal or a silage acidified by formic acid. Starfish meal was prepared from starfish caught in May, and a starfish juice fraction was obtained by pressing fresh starfish. Commercial fish silage from farmed salmon was also included in the experiment. The standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA) was evaluated in a Latin square design with pigs (initial weight 39.3 kg) fitted with a simple T-cannula in the terminal ileum. Diets contained 131–162 g CP/kg and 5 g chromic oxide/kg. Endogenous losses of protein and AA were estimated by feeding an N-free diet. On a dry matter (DM) basis, mussel meal... |

An alternative substrate in the biogas or bioethanol production may be the sugar containing juice obtained after fractionation of beets into a juice used for fermentation and into a pulp used for feeding. The objective of the present experiment was to evaluate the fresh pulp of top and root from sugar (Angus) and fodder (Colosse) beets as feed for pigs and ruminants. The pulp was prepared by a cold mechanical pressing. Two digestibility experiments were carried out according to the difference method. In experiment 1, 30 sows were housed individually in metabolic cages for 12 d, and urine and feces were collected during the last 7 d. The daily ration consisted of either root or top pulp combined with a basal diet. In experiment 2, 25 wethers were housed... |

tThe effects of including starfish meal (SM) as an alternative protein source in diets for pigletson performance, faeces characteristics and plasma parameters were investigated. Four dietswere formulated to contain different protein sources: fish meal (FM), extruded soybeanmeal (ESBM) and two levels of SM (SM50 and SM100). All diets contained 174.4 g soybeanmeal/kg feed and were supplemented by up to 166-172 g standardised ileal digestible crudeprotein/kg feed with either FM, ESBM, SM or a combination giving rise to two SM + ESBMdiets with different levels of SM and ESBM. One wk after weaning, 96 pigs with a bodyweight of 9.6 ± 0.4 kg were housed individually and allocated to one of the four diets (n = 24)and fed ad libitum for a 14 d period. Average daily... |

BACKGROUND: Compensatory growth is the physiological process leading to accelerated growth following a period of growth retardation. This study assessed different feeding strategies thatmay induce compensatory growth. Pigs from two sire breeds, reared under organic conditions, were subjected to: (1) ad libitum feeding; (2) 0.7× ad libitum feeding; (3) 0.7× ad libitum feeding for 25 days followedby adlibitum feeding toslaughter; and(4) as (3) butfinished with an energy- andvitamin E-enriched diet. RESULTS: Compared to the performance of ad libitum fed pigs, re-alimentation was not capable of fully compensating the effect of the imposed feed restriction either in the number of days used to reach the same slaughter weight (+4% to 7%) or in the slaughter... |

Among consumers in Europe and other parts of the world there is an increasing interest in high-value pork positioned with regard to animal welfare (Krystallis et al., 2012). Free-range pork production is considered more animal friendly because the system enables the animals to express their natural behaviour to a large degree. However, outdoor production of growing-finishing pigs on pastures as described by Halberg et al. (2010) has a major drawback in terms of high risk of nitrate leaching (Eriksen et al., 2006ab; Salomon et al., 2007). This is to a large extent related to high stocking densities combined with large input of nutrients from the supplementary feed (Eriksen et al., 2006ab). The use of supplementary feed is often higher in free-range compared... |

The standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of CP and AA was evaluated in soybean (Glycine max) meal, sunflower (Helianthus annuus) meal, rapeseed cake, and field pea (Pisum sativum) using 10 pigs and in lupine (Lupinus angustifolius) using 7 pigs. Pigs were fitted with either a T-cannula or a steered ileocecal valve-cannula. Diets contained 170 to 186 g CP/kg DM. Endogenous losses of CP and AA were estimated by feeding a N-free diet. The SID was calculated using the average of Cr2O3 and TiO2 as indigestible markers and corrected for type of cannula. The SID of CP was greater (P < 0.05) for soybean meal and pea compared to sunflower meal, rapeseed cake, and lupine. The SID of Lys and His were lowest (P < 0.05) in sunflower meal, and the SID of Met and... |
