We are very sorry to learn that Mr J.M. Black, the father of South Australian botany, passed away suddenly but in full harness after a short illness in his 97th year, medio December 1951. Dr Black was born in Wigtown, Scotland, and received his early education there, finishing in Dresden, Germany. He arrived in South Australia in 1877 and farmed for 5 years. Between 1883 and 1902 he held varied and finally important positions on the staff of ”Hansard”, ”The Register”, and ”The Advertiser”. Having achieved the highest position possible in this field he retired to devote full time leisure to the study of native and naturalised plants growing in S. Australia. He achieved considerable fame for by 1929 he had completed his four part work ”Flora of South... |

A cardboard holder will be forwarded to libraries through the care of Dr Fr. Verdoorn, Waltham, Mass., U.S.A. In this number two new headings are found viz the first of a series of contributions regarding the dates of publication of certain botanical works of major interest to Malaysian botany, and a first contribution towards an annotated list of little-known publications which appeared during World War II. |

The Checklist of the flora of Cebu by D. Bicknell is finished. It is intended to be published as a CD-ROM which will contain plates of 168 pteridophytes and 1578 spermatophytes. For those who need to invent names for new taxa or is interested in their derivation it will be very worthwhile to invest USD 27.95 in the reprint of R.W. Brown’s Composition of scientific words (Rev. ed. 1956; reprint: 2000) ii, 882 pp, Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington DC. ISBN 1-56098-848-7 (PB). W.T. Stearn called it “one of the best of its kind ever written”. See also the review by R. Schmid [Taxon 49 (2000) 840]. |

Dr. J.A.R. Anderson, who retired from the Sarawak Forest Service, and now lives at 15 Church Hill, Edinburgh EH10 4BG, will continue his interest in Malesian botany and ecology as a consultant forester and ecologist. The MS. of a project on which he had been working for several years is now in the final stage. This is a ”Check List of the Trees of Sarawak”; the scientific names will be coded and alphabetically arranged by families, genera and species, together with a moderately comprehensive list of vernacular names. This should be of value to the Forest Department in Sarawak. Miss P. Aston, senior botanist at the Melbourne Herbarium, is Australian liaison officer at Kew where she will remain until mid-1974. She is specialized in aquatic plants of... |

We deeply regret to have lost three ardent supporters since the last bulletin appeared. Among them the nestor of Malesian botanists, Mr. I. H. Burkill, who passed away at the age of 94, a gentle scholar whom we had the privilege to meet on several occasions and with whom we had a fairly lively correspondence. Originally a collaborator of Sir George Watt on Economic Products of India, explorer of the Abor Expedition, Assam, later director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, he had a wonderful knowledge of and intense interest in the relations between man and plants. This was probably the reason that he got deeply interested in the botany of the yam family, of which he became a specialist, taxonomical, ecological, morphological and anatomical. He had also a... |

The frontispiece of this number serves to feast our eyes on the daring fecit of Mr. Corner who has now organized the Malaysian Moraceae, a work on which he has spent more than a decade of intensive work, following many years of earlier work in prewar time. Daring because it confronts us with an attempt to make an imaginary picture of the prototype, or archetype, of a family as it emerged from this study. I feel certain that this will stimulate interest in evolutional thinking on the basis of morphology and anatomy combined with geography. Elsewhere in this number Mr. Corner has let himself go on the subject, how this work grew under his hands and became synthesized in his mind; may especially our younger colleagues be instructed and refreshed by it. Work... |

Weekend Zuid-Limburg (Noorbeek)... |
