New developments in the mass culture and nutritional enrichment of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis using artificial diets OMA
Komis, A.; Naessens, E.; Van Ballaer, E.; Van Sprang, P.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A research program was carried out to improve and facilitate rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis) culturing as well as to assure their optimal nutritional quality as a prey, concentrating on the development of a dry and complete rotifer diet that does not require the use of algae and does result in a HUFA rich Brachionus. The present poster provides results dealing with culture aspects and rotifer nutritional quality. Different diet compositions based on single cell proteins enriched with various nutritional additives were evaluated. Results obtained so far demonstrate that a selected formula of a combined culture and enrichment diet, that does not involve the use of microalgae at all, can be successfully used for growing...

The effect of dietary n-3 HUFA and 22:6n-3/20:5n-3 ratio on white shrimp larvae and postlarvae OMA
Wouters, R.; Van Hauwaert, A.; Naessens, E.; Ramos, X.; Pedrazzoli, A.; Lavens, P..
The influence of varying dietary n-3 HUFA concentrations and ratios of 22:6n-3/20:5n-3 (DHA/EPA) on culture performance and fatty acid composition of white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) larvae and postlarvae was verified in two experiments. In a first experiment, shrimp (zoea 2-postlarvae 11) were fed rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis) and Artemia spp. nauplii that were enriched with different self-emulsifying concentrates: one HUFA-free coconut oil (T1), and three iso-HUFA concentrates with DHA/EPA ratios of 0.6 (T2), 2 (T3) and 4 (T4), respectively. In a second experiment, postlarvae were fed for 25 days (starting from postlarvae 10) on isolipidic semi-purified diets: one HUFA-free control (TA), and four...

Maturation performance of Penaeus vannamei co-fed Artemia biomass preparations OMA
Naessens, E.; Lavens, P.; Gomez, L.; Browdy, C.L.; McGovern-Hopkins, K.; Spencer, A.W.; Kawahigashi, D.; Sorgeloos, P..
Few shrimp hatcheries successfully propagate captive broodstock on a commercial scale. Diets for acceptable maturation performance of Penaeus vannamei have typically relied on the inclusion of marine polychaetes (bloodworm) from Panama or Maine, USA, which are expensive and are of unpredictable supply. Studies were therefore undertaken at experimental and commercial scale to replace or supplement the polychaetes by frozen ongrown Artemia which were either non-enriched or bioencapsulated with specific boosters. In experiment 1 the control diet consisted of frozen squid only and was evaluated against broodstock diets where 60% of the squid was substituted by bloodworm or enriched Artemia biomass....

Promising results in the seed culturing of the Manila clam Tapes semidecussata with a manipulated yeast product as a partial substitute for algae OMA
Albentosa, M.; Naessens, E.; Léger, P.; Coutteau, P.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The results are presented of preliminary trials conducted with Tapes semiducussata spat using manipulated yeast products as substitutes for unicellular algae in their diets. Findings showed that spat growth increased with increasing amounts of algae in the artificial diet; growth was very poor when no algae were offered at all. It is concluded that manipulated yeasts may replace a substantial part of the algae in clam diets, but complete replacement is not possible, yet.
