Farmer Family Learning Groups for Community Development Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Tibasiima, Thaddeo; Nalunga, Jane; Dissing, Aage; Dissing, Inge Lis.
The approach which is owned by everybody who uses it. Farmer Family Learning Groups are groups of farmer families, who together define their needs and goals in relation to their own future development, both as individuals, families and as a group - and then they help each other to reach the goals. The groups form strong networks and help each other, and help the entire local community. Organic farming is practiced in ways which are contextual specific and dependent on the environment, wherever it is being practiced. Forming farmer groups using this approach is likewise contextual specific and entirely determined by the needs and wishes and agreements within the group of families who in the first place decided to form a group for conscious and goal...

This catalogue of ideas has been developed in a joint effort by six organisations (Caritas Kampala, Uganda Rural Development (URDT), Sulma Foods, Africa2000Network (A2N), National Organic and Organic Denmark) in the project ECOSAF in Uganda. The approach has been quite a lot like action research, and Development in practice. The focus of this project (2013-2015) was Farmer Family Learning Groups (FFLG) as a method for developing long-term food security through social capital building. Furthermore, another project based on the FFLG approach but focusing on the formation of Marketing Associations (MAs) contributed to this booklet. This project was carried through in a joined effort between Sustainable Agricultural Trainers Network (SATNET), NOGAMU and OD....

Agro-ecological system analysis (AESA) and farm planning Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Nalunga, Jane.
This is a planning tool and a practical guide which can be used by farming system students and farmer groups to get an overview over a farm. Organic agriculture is based on knowledge, insight and whole farm approaches. The farming system must work for each farmer family. Crop rotation cycles must be based on planning ahead, sometimes more than 2 years, so that different elements of the farm can work together. Intercropping must be based on knowledge on which crops support each other. The surrounding nature must be considered in the planning, e.g. rainfall, animals in the environment, where some of them can be predators and some can eat the crops. Herbs and weeds can prove to be valuable sources of nutrients, medicine or bio-pesticides....

The Potential of ecological farming in delivering social and economic development to small holder farming families (The Rwenzori experience) Organic Eprints
Tibasiima, Thaddeo; Dissing, Inge Lis; Dissing, Aage; Nalunga, Jane; Isgren, Ellinor; Masereka, Longino.
Since 2009 collaboration between Sustainable Agriculture Trainers’ Network (SATNET), National Organic Agriculture Movement of Uganda (NOGAMU) and Organic Denmark (OD) has seen the establishment of over 130 ecological Farmer Family Learning Groups (FFLGs) in the Rwenzori region composed of up to 3255 farming families. Compared to the forms of conventional agriculture in which much effort has been invested in this part of the country and in the country as a whole, the FFLGs in the Rwenzori region clearly demonstrate the social and economic benefits of agricultural development approaches based on ecological/organic alternatives and strengthening of farmer collaboration. While environmental dimensions form an important motivation behind these efforts, this...
