Evidence for increasing concentration in plant breeding industries in the United States and the European Union AgEcon

There is evidence of an increase in market concentration and in the importance of private plant breeding in the seed industry following the widespread adoption of Intellectual Property Rights regimes for the industry in the developed world. We use data from the US Patent and Trademark Office, US Plant Variety Protection Office and various European Plant Variety Protection databases to estimate the extent of these changes in the seed corn industry.

The Australian Wool Industry: A hedonic pricing analysis of the factors affecting price of Australian wool AgEcon

We estimate a hedonic pricing model to quantify the relationship between clean price of lots of wool and individual lot characteristics for all superfine, fine, medium and broad wool types. We expand on existing literature by controlling for key macroeconomic conditions at the time of sale and are able to examine the longer term trend in global demand for wool by utilizing data over a number of selling seasons. Our results indicate fibre diameter, strength, breed group, vegetable matter base and fleece contamination play a key role in the purchase decision. Premiums accrue for finer, strong wool which has been grower classed, while discounts have been identified for wool tainted by branding contamination, unscourable colour or the presence of skin pieces....

Evaluating the genetic progress of wheat in NSW, 1992-2009 AgEcon

Intellectual Property Regimes (IPRs) have been justified on the basis that they promote innovation, but it is not always clear that they do so. Empirical studies of IPRs in an Australian context have been limited. Plant variety protection is one form of IPR. The passing of the Australian Plant Breeder’s Rights Act of 1994 has been followed by significant commercialisation of the wheat breeding industry. The purpose of this paper is to consider whether this commercialisation has benefited wheat productivity through varietal improvement. Risk premiums and GM traits AgEcon

An argument in favor of the development of genetically modified (GM) hybrids is that their presence is considered to be risk decreasing. On this basis, insurance premiums for corn growers in the United States who plant approved hybrids have been reduced. In this study we investigate, using a large dataset of experimental data compiled from reports of results from experimental field trials of corn hybrids by the State Agricultural Extension Services of ten universities over 20 years, whether the presence in a corn hybrid of a GM trait, or a combination of these traits, is likely to increase or decrease risk. Predicting performance in undergraduate agricultural economics AgEcon

Entry to the Bachelor of Agricultural Economics (BAgrEc) program at the University of Sydney is consistently less competitive than that for the Bachelor of Economics (BEc) and Bachelor of Commerce (BComm) programs. Given that students in the BAgrEc program undertake units in common with students in the BEc and BComm programs, it is of interest to examine the importance of school performance and first year university in the determination of success at university. This paper takes information for nine cohorts of BAgrEc students and tests their performance in first-year core subjects against the university entrance ranking, school English and mathematics marks, gender, and type of school. Measuring the Contribution of Genetic Characteristics as an Indicator of Innovation: The Case of Corn in the USA, 1990-2009 AgEcon

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) regimes for plant breeding are generally justified on the basis that they encourage innovation. Introduction of IPR regimes for plant varieties in the United States has led to increased concentration, but it is less clear whether IPRs have promoted useful innovation, as measured by productivity of available corn hybrids. There are difficulties in finding a satisfactory measure of innovation in plant breeding, and in this paper we propose a procedure.
