Amsterdam Expeditions to the West Indian Islands, Report 39. Arubolana parvioculata n. sp. (Isopoda, Cirolanidae) from the interstitial of an intermittent river in Jamaica, with notes on A. imula Botosaneanu & Stock and A. Aruboides (Bowman & Iliffe) Naturalis
Notenboom, Jos.
Arubolana parvioculata, a new stygobiont species of cirolanid isopod crustaceans, is described from an interstitial habitat near the mouth of an intermittent river, the Rio Secco, Discovery Bay, Jamaica. This is the first subterranean cirolanid from Jamaica. Alltogether, 6 genera of stygobiont cirolanids, with 9 species, are known from 7 islands in the West Indies. The new species has a small and elongate body, which is typical of inhabitants of interstitia. It is also euryhaline. An additional description is given of Arubolana imula Botosaneanu & Stock, 1979, type-species of the genus, based on new specimens from the type-locality. Bermudalana aruboides Bowman & Iliffe, 1983, from caves on the oceanic island Bermuda, is referred to the genus...

Lusitanian species of the amphipod Pseudoniphargus Chevreux, 1901 with a key to all known Iberian species Naturalis
Notenboom, Jos.
Pseudoniphargus callaicus n. sp. is described from a well in the vicinity of the coast in northwestern Galicia, Spain. The type materials of Ps. mateusorum Stock, longispinum Stock, and brevipedunculatus Stock are reexamined and their resemblances discussed. The new species, Ps. callaicus, appears to belong together with Ps. mateusorum and brevipedunculatus to a weakly defined Lusitanian-Azorian group. This group is more closely related to the north Spanish and Bermudian species, and to Ps. gibraltaricus from southern Spain, than to its remaining congeners. An updated checklist and key of the Iberian Pseudoniphargus species is included in this paper.

Species of the genus Pseudoniphargus Chevreux, 1901 (Amphipoda) from the Betic Cordillera of southern Spain Naturalis
Notenboom, Jos.
The genus Pseudoniphargus, up to now represented in southern Spain by a single species, branchiatus Stock, appears to be widely distributed in the area. Through the present study, based on new collections obtained in 1984 and 1985, a total of 15 species is recognized. The distribution of Pseudoniphargus in the south of Spain seems to coincide with the Betic Cordillera, which is a structural geological entity with important influences of the sea during the Late Cretaceous or Tertiary. Most of the species are allopatric and have very limited distributions. However, in the Guadalquivir basin one species, latipes n. sp., is widely distributed while three local species, vomeratus n. sp., cazorlae n. sp. and illustris n. sp., occur within the range of latipes....

Sensonator valentiensis n. g., n. sp. (Amphipoda) from different biotopes in southern Valencia Naturalis
Notenboom, Jos.
A new species, Sensonator valentiensis, the only representative of a new subterranean amphipod genus, was discovered in a rather small area in the S.E. part of the province of Valencia. A few specimens have been found in wells, a hyporheic habitat, and a phreatic cave lake. In general, Sensonator has a rather primitive morphology with remarkable features such as presence of calceoli on the antennae in both sexes, reductions in the mouthparts, and a natatory third uropod. The new genus is very distinct from other stygobiont amphipods, and it cannot even be classified in one of the existing families of Gammaridea, but with some reserve it is placed close to the Gammaroidea and Pardaliscoidea. S. valentiensis was not attracted by baits, but has been seen...

Investigaciones sobre la fauna de las aguas subterráneas de España: Lista de estaciones y primeros resultados. Research on the groundwater fauna of Spain: List of stations and first results Naturalis
Notenboom, Jos; Meijers, Ine.

Phylogeny and biogeography of the Niphargus transitivus group of species (Crustacea, Amphipoda) Naturalis
Sket, Boris; Notenboom, Jos.
The Niphargus transitivus group includes 12 groundwaterdwelling species. It is defined by an upright body position during locomotion, a small, stout body with short appendages, except for long coxae and dactyli, coxae V-VI equilobate or posterolobate, accessory flagellum subject to reduction, and the body endowed with adaptations for volvation ( = ability to enroll into a ball). The biogeography of this southeastern European group of species is discussed and a cladistic analysis of the group is presented. Some cases of parallel character evolution in groundwater amphipods are mentioned. The inference of biogeographic and phylogenetic information in elucidating the evolutionary history of the group is hampered by inconsistency of the data. One of the...

The species of the genus Pseudoniphargus Chevreux, 1901 (Amphipoda) from northern Spain Naturalis
Notenboom, Jos.
Based on new material collected in 1983, 1984, and 1985, the genus Pseudoniphargus proves to be distributed in northern Spain from Asturias, in the western part of the Cordillera Cantabrica, to Navarra and Huesca, in the headlands of the Pyrenees; and from coastal Atlantic regions up to the northern border of the Meseta. A total of 13 species are recognized, of which 11 are new. They are not only found in cave waters, but also in springs, hyporheic habitats, and wells. The species are allopatric in distribution; burgensis n. sp., eborarius n. sp., unisexualis Stock, 1980, and spiniferus n. sp. are known from single localities only; jereanus n. sp., gorbeanus n. sp., vasconiensis n. sp., incantatus n. sp., and guernicae n. sp. have more or less small...

Metahadzia uncispina, a new amphipod from phreatic groundwaters of the Guadalquivir River basin of southern Spain Naturalis
Notenboom, Jos.
Metahadzia uncispina n. sp. is described, being the second species of the genus on the Iberian Peninsula. The new species, well characterized by the transformation of the apical spine on the endopodite of the male uropod 2, is undoubtedly closely related with M. tavaresi (Mateus & Mateus, 1972) from the south of Portugal. Comments are made about recent emendations of the original concept of the genus Metahadzia Stock, 1977.

Phylogenetic relationships and biogeography of the groundwater-dwelling amphipod genus Pseudoniphargus (Crustacea), with emphasis on the Iberian species Naturalis
Notenboom, Jos.
Numerical phylogenetic methods are applied in order to arrive at synapomorphic similarities between species of the stygobiont amphipod genus Pseudoniphargus. Character polarity is assessed by comparison with the relevant outgroups Parapseudoniphargus and Allomelita, within a cluster of presumedly interrelated genera of Hadzioidea. The degree of morphological differentiation of Pseudoniphargus is low and the available potential apomorphies are insufficient to resolve phylogenetic relationships to the species level. The inconsistency in the data is high, which may be a result of an underlying peripatric speciation model, difficulties in discriminating mutual exclusive and homologous character states, and a high probability of independent character evolution....

Isopoda Asellota de Turquie récoltés en 1987. Netherlands biospeleological explorations in Turkey, 5 Naturalis
Henry, Jean-Paul; Magniez, Guy; Notenboom, Jos.
Asellus aquaticus is present in 19 of about 100 Turkish groundwater stations prospected during biospeleological explorations. All specimens of these stygophilic populations remain oculate, even though their integumental pigmentation is more or less reduced. Proasellus lykaonicus Argano & Pesce, 1978 has been found again in a second cave, nearby the type locality. A large and endemic, stygobiont species, Proasellus pisidicus n. sp., from phreatic groundwater, Vilâyet Burdur, and the minute Proasellus pamphylicus n. sp. from interstitial waters of the eastern part of Vilâyet Antalya are described. The stygobiont proasellids of Asia Minor, P. lykaonicus and P. pisidicus n. sp. belong to the same phylogenetic strain of Proasellus as those of Transcaucasia,...

Amsterdam Expeditions to the West Indian Islands, report 12. Some new hypogean cirolanid isopod crustaceans from Haiti and Mayaguana (Bahamas) Naturalis
Notenboom, Jos.
A new stygobiont genus of Isopoda Cirolanidae, Haitilana, with two new species, H. radicicola and H. acanthura, are described from groundwaters in Haiti. These are the first hypogean cirolanids recorded from the island of Hispaniola. The new genus is mainly characterized by its pleon segmentation, the clearly prehensile first pereiopods and weakly prehensile second and third pereiopods, and the 2- and 5- segmented pedunculus of antennae 1 and 2, respectively. Haitilana shows the greatest morphological resemblance to Antrolana lira Bowman, 1964, from the Appalachian Valley, Virginia, U.S.A. The localities where Haitilana was found, have been flooded by the sea during the Cenozoic. Regression seems to be the most plausible explanation for the evolution of...
